Scouting and international breaks

276

Not all managers regard it as necessary to personally watch a player before signing him. Some are satisfied to trust their scouts, stats and video evidence.

That’s through necessity, though.  What chance of you of watching a late addition to your wanted list in the dying weeks of a window?  They would all prefer to see the player in person.

With two games a week, that is often impossible. This issue lead Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan to over rely on players they came up against in the SPL.

International breaks are, therefore, an oasis of opportunity.  This is when a manager can travel half the globe watching football, assessing multiple targets.

Ange Postecoglou now has free midweeks but he has used the February and March breaks to get ahead of the curve. Let’s hope wisely.

  1. Counting chickens and all that!!!

I’m a tiny bit concerned about the hun game, sure on paper we should stuff them. But, I’m old enough to have seen many times, the form book go out the window, many times.

I’m sure we will win, but going on about the league being ours if we do, sorry but let’s wait and see.

I do however have total faith in Ange and the team who will be doing the ” one game at a time” thing, so confident I am but not over confident

  3. Just read an interesting article on psychology in football. It praises the pathfinder Carvalhaes, a Brazilian who worked with the ‘Pele’ World Cup squad in 1958. Amazingly it was not until the late 1980’s and Milan’s “Mind Room’, that his methods became an accepted part of the game in continental Europe – although many would say the Argentine/French coach Helenio Herrera in the sixties, could get into opposing teams’ heads with his Catenaccio system. He also used psychological methodology and was a great disciplinarian with his strict diet regime & ‘early bed count’ prior to matches. Of course we all know that Bertie leading-off The Celtic Song in the tunnel at Lisbon, used a ‘Maryhill variant’ to get inside the Inter players heads before kick-off.

They say good players don’t become bad overnight, so last season’s collapse must have its root cause in the psychological mind-set of a squad of players, previously multi-winners, who apparently downed-tools and let Gerrard and his squad walk all over them. The manager who said “some don’t want to be here”, must also figure large.

Of course this season we see quite the reverse, with Ange inheriting a ‘rag-bag’ & depleted squad; then after a disastrous start, turn them into a domestic juggernaut, unbeaten in 30+ matches. We don’t really know what Ange’s particular brand of psychology is – but we do know it works.

Bill Beswick, a psychologist with the England team once said – “The mind is the athlete, the body simply the means”. If that holds true, then it surely gives us a better understanding of Celtic’s performances, last season and this.

Ange has stated the mind-set for the Ibrox showdown – confidence & no fear, just like the Celtic Park 3-0 game. Let’s hope our players give a repeat performance

We need the reserve League back but it’s not affordable………..according to “rangers”

  9. Largely Croatia reserve team looking good. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to check if Jura comes on, as I have an appointment with a quack shortly. 0-0 after 34 minutes.

    Aff oot.

  10. I have often heard people say that form goes out the window in trying to predict outcomes in games involving Us and Them. It does not feel to me that that is the case. I think whoever was the dominant team in any era won far more of these games than the `weaker` side.

I have no facts to support my feeling.

Still waiting on you doing yer homework on what actually is / was monetarism?

Being the Thatcherite / Big Bang / City of London bean counter that you are I thought you would have had it all worked out at the drop of a hat.

For the record the cuts in public spending in late 1976 were not in any way a form monetarism — they were a clumsy political response to the Treasury drive by carried out by the political establishment to destabilise a progressive government doing their best to deliver social development and economic progress.

Whoever told you to the contrary is either a Tory yanking yer chain or a Trot at the madam.

If you want a lesson on market manipulation for political ends look at the exchange rate fluctuations that took place in the late 70’s — pound crashed — just as the oil started to flow.

Any response that mentions 26% inflation — nothing to do with HW / DH / AWB …

Lag in the system from the Barber boom / 74 oil shock / post colonial raw material cost inflation / Vietnam War era euro dollar hangover — will be treated with the derision it deserves.

Public spending went up in 77 / 78 / 79 and would have gone up in 80 if the Nats hadn’t done the durty on JC.

Cumbie — you are having a laugh or you really are the small town boy your posts suggest.

Cumbie — there is a world beyond Cumberland Street — try 1950’s 2nd wave new town policy?

Cumbie — Egg chasers of some repute back in the day.

Your City pals probably knew us as Scumberned.

Finally step away from the emoji button — trendy vicar stuff for a been counter of your vintage.

Still waiting for your political outlook.

Very quiet on who or what you support / vote for.

    I wonder why?

I’d have Taylor in for Ralston based mainly on the partnerships up both wings but otherwise I’m in agreement. If Maeda can keep the Tav/Pen quiet I reckon it should be a decent afternoon.

Monetarism, from what I recall YOU did not know🤣,

was introduced by Denis Healey in 1976.Policies implemented by IMF structural adjustment programmes as security for IMF loans.

You have been informed of this previously

It enabled Margaret(Tony’s hero) Thatcher to say her cuts were not as swinjin under her chancellory as they were under Denis Healey in 1976.imagine that.
