SCVO’s messy rant about Boruc, “our” Weiss and Catholic schools

1752

My attention was drawn to the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) blog yesterday, also covered by Joe O’Rourke on the Association site.  SCVO Director of Pubic Affairs, John Downie, writes about the “proposed bill on sectarianism” but seems to get muddled in his role as a director of SCVO and using SCVO resources to speak as a Rangers fan; in this instance blaming Catholic schools for sectarianism.  How ironic.

Downie writes:

“We’ve previously seen Rangers fans outraged by Celtic goalie Artur Boric crossing himself during games but less bothered – obviously – by about our own players (like Vladimir Weiss last season) doing the same thing.”

“Our own players”!  Is SCVO some closed shop where they talk about Artur Boruc as a “Celtic goalie” and Vladimi Weiss as one of our “own”?

So far, so disturbing, but Downie then uses the article to ride to the rescue with:

“The solution:

Personally, as someone who grew up in the East End of Glasgow and lives in the west of Scotland, I agree with some of what Conservative MSP John Lamont says.  In my opinion one key causes of sectarianism is Scotland continuing to have separate denominational and non-denominational schools.”

So, if only we didn’t have Catholic schools, players like Artur Boruc and “our” Vladimir Weiss would be able to cross themselves free of harassment.  Bizarrely, Downie’s article is subtitled “treating the symptoms not the causes”.  I don’t think he was trying to suggest it’s best to treat the symptoms.

The cause of intolerance is not differences in ethnic, religious or sexuality, it is ignorant bigots.  It is ludicrous to suggest tackling intolerance by assimilating people into some mono-culture.  It’s downright dangerous to blame a minority for intolerance of, and by, them, a sentiment that will only fan the flames of hatred.

The European Examiner reports that various politicians have called for Mr Downie’s removal but SCVO chief exec, Martin Sime, apparently sees nothing wrong in SCVO running a blog discussing one of “our” Rangers players and the “Celtic goalie”, while simultaneously blaming educationally successful faith schools for sectarianism.  SCVO has offered a metaphorical No Surrender to resignation calls.

A brief comment for those who don’t live in Scotland….  Attitudes like this once prevailed but are harder to find these days.  We are a modern, progressive, society, for the most part.

  1. Steinreignedsupreme – You appear to be confused my friend.

Firstly, I am not ashamed of the Crusades. While undoubtedly some deplorable crimes were committed by some in the name of this courageous endeavour, (deplorable crimes tend to happen in war, however noble the cause – the Allies in WW2 did some unspeakable things but I’m still glad they defeated the Axis powers) they were on the whole a belated response to four centuries of conquest and enslavement of Christians.

It has become fashionable recently to deride our ancestors and deplore everything they ever did as racist, sexist, and homophobic. I don’t follow that fashion.

Secondly, things that happened a thousand years ago don’t matter a fiddler’s fart when discussing what is going on in the world today.

If you believe that the Crusades were evil, it doesn’t excuse people doing evil things in 2012. It’s like seeing the guy next door break into your car and thinking “I’d report that to the police, but that would be hypocritical as my great-great-grandfather stole a horse one time”. You are falsely trying to “even things up” in your own mind, and it is causing you to write things that make little sense.

“Schools should be teaching children to make their decisions based on reason and according to known facts.

I think that is a great basis for life.”

I am sorry if that sounded arrogant.

I thought arrogance is better explained though, by saying something is true without basis in fact.

You “feel” it to be true then proclaim it as fact is supreme arrogance surely?

For a support that prides itself on its tolerance we can be pretty intolerant at times; for a broad church we’re very narrow minded.

As for myself , if I’m going to be ‘hated’ for my presumed religion then I might as well practice it.

When you approach a city to fight against it, you shall offer it terms of peace. If it agrees to make peace with you and opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall become your forced labor and shall serve you. However, if it does not make peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it. When the LORD your God gives it into your hand, you shall strike all the men in it with the edge of the sword. Only the women and the children and the animals and all that is in the city, all its spoil, you shall take as booty for yourself; and you shall use the spoil of your enemies which the LORD your God has given you. Thus you shall do to all the cities that are very far from you, which are not of the cities of these nations nearby. Only in the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you shall not leave alive anything that breathes.

So do you believe it is a good idea to introduce to the school curriculum of children from the ages of 4-16 the scientific and philosophical arguments for and against the existence of God to help them determine an answer which is impossible for either side of the argument to answer themselves?

Or should they be allowed to just go to the schools of their parents choosing which is known to be a caring, nurturing environment trusted by parents that has a record of high standards and success which is much sought after?

The thing is,I’m still at a loss as to what decisions kids make in faith schools which are not based in fact and reason.

  19. Steinreignedsupreme – My dear friend in Celtic.

You keep telling yourself that, because the Crusades happened one thousand years ago, we mustn’t criticise the more excitable religious communities in the world of 2012. I’m well aware of the mindset, it is well meaning but misguided.

    Whyte denies unpaid castle bill

Rangers owner Craig Whyte has been told to pay a disputed bill of £86,127 to a roofing firm after a sheriff described his evidence as “wholly unreliable”.

One Stop Roofing Supplies claimed Mr Whyte’s company Tixway UK had breached an agreement to pay for goods bought by another company, Snowcast UK.

Mr Whyte, 40, disputed this and said he was a creditor of Snowcast.

In a written ruling, Sheriff Nigel Ross stated: “I reject the evidence of Mr Whyte as wholly unreliable.”

The case centred on the business relationship between Mr Whyte, Chris Keating – who owned Snowcast UK before it folded – and One Stop Roofing Supplies, which is run by Robert Jenkins.

During evidence in December, Mr Whyte told the court he was introduced to Mr Jenkins in April 2008 through friend and businessman Mr Keating.

The court was told Mr Whyte helped Mr Keating’s own business by lending money when it was required.

It was said that Mr Keating regularly bought supplies from the roofing firm.

Mr Whyte told the court the only orders made by him, and that he was invoiced for by One Stop Roofing, were for the repairs he was carrying out at Castle Grant in Granton on Spey.

He said he did not agree for invoices for Mr Keating’s business to be sent to him or paid by him.

His (Craig Whyte) evidence is contradicted by virtually every other piece of evidence”

    Sheriff Nigel Ross

The court also heard that Mr Whyte became the director of Tixway after serving a seven-year disqualification from being a company director.

Asked why he was banned, Mr Whyte said he could not remember as it was some time ago. He also said he did not want to say in open court and get it wrong.

In his ruling on the case, Sheriff Ross stated: “I accept the evidence led by the pursuer (One Stop Roofing) as credible and reliable, and supported by the available documentation.

“I reject the evidence of Mr Whyte as wholly unreliable.

“It is not possible to ascertain whether he is not telling the truth or is simply unable to recollect the true position, and has convinced himself that this arrangement is something that he would not have entered into.

“Either way, his evidence is contradicted by virtually every other piece of evidence.”

    ‘Legal liability’

Sheriff Ross found that Mr Whyte’s firm Tixway had “offered its own credit rating to allow cover for the supply of large volumes of materials to Snowcast”.

He said this was “subject to a high degree of control by the defender over Snowcast and an understanding between the defender (Tixway) and Snowcast that Snowcast would make payment for those materials”.

Sheriff Ross concluded: “As a matter of legal liability, however, the defender remains the principal obligant.

“There is no dispute as to the sum outstanding, nor that it was properly incurred, and I accept the total brought out by the pursuer’s figures.”

A hearing will be fixed for a later date for both parties to discuss expenses arising from the case.

I see the Aston Villa support have finally woken up and are having a protest against big eck on Sunday.

Big ecks defence is it is now fashionable to have protests these days and there was talk of a protest against Arsene Wenger the other week so he is in good company.

So nothing to do with only 6 wins out of 24 games in the EPL this season eck? no just cos its fashionable!!

Can anyone confirm if there was genuine talk of protests at Arsenal recently, or like the “unsurpassed dignity” is big eck rewriting history to suit his own agenda.
