SFA giving lectures on accountability

1464

Fifa is unfit for purpose, investigations abound but we’ve not seen convictions yet.  The president has not been arrested, but, well, he has president over this enormous shambles, yet he refuses to resign.  His resignation is needed to relieve the reputation of Fifa, the reputation of football itself.  We all know this, but SFA chef exec, Stewart Regan said as much.

The SFA is Blatter’s role model.  Regan conceded SFA president Campbell Ogilvie was horribly conflicted, as the Association dealt with the consequences of the biggest directorial negation of duty in Scottish football history – by Ogilvie, who was director and company secretary of the dysfunctional board.

Ogilvie never resigned.  Ogilvie has still not resigned.  Regan said nothing.  Ogilvie’s supporters in the game rallied round, just as Blatter’s have today.

This is how human nature works.  Ogilvie has been in enough committee meetings, pressed enough flesh, to ensure that despite the slaying he took at the hands of Lord Nimmo Smith’s SPL inquiry, he could brass it out.  Accountability at the SFA does not exist.  I get it.  But, the SFA cannot have the audacity to make moralistic statements about the corporate accountability of others.

It is a depressing feature of Scottish life that we don’t have a culture of accountability, that the media are not sufficiently plural that such hypocrisy is exposed for what it is, that there isn’t a single elected representative prepared to disengage with the Scottish establishment on this today.

The new media are not there yet.  We don’t have the authority of a broadcaster or politician to demand, and get, accountability.  That’ll change in time.

    Tom …

I would like to think you are right, and the financial aspect may make this game a bit different from the last what 35 games or so since they have last won at the Govan Graveyard. (I’m assuming 2 games a year for, what, 18 years since they last won there?)

    But, I am concerned ….

That Motherwell team under McCall might as well have shown up and played in blue jerseys given the amount of effort most of them put in in many games (which is to say, none).

Chris Sutton is not the only person to think many teams in Scotland have rolled over for them. We have all seen it time and time again. All by ‘good professionals’…

And as for referees…. in Scotland, they aren’t punished for bad performances involving Zombies … they get rewarded! Advancements and lucrative engagements on the dinner circuit!

For me, if any pro is prepared to roll over, that player is lacking in integrity and self-respect. And nothing can be put past a player or person who is truly lacking in self-respect.

So, I dont think we can rule out a serious lack of professional integrity in some (not all, but some… and it only takes on bad apple….) of the Mother players …..

and if we are having to rely upon on the greed (the desire not to lose SPFL wages) as a spur to finally get them to actually try in a game against the zombies, then that is a terrible indictment of scottish football…

in spite of that, I still have a feeling that there are enough good guys (Skippy, Pearson, etc.) that they might just pull this off ……

  13. Busy week at work – been trying to find time to post some thoughts since Sunday.

Firstly, what a great day at Celtic Park. You could feel the warmth and togetherness before, during and after the game. Probably the biggest turnout yet at the corner, with the highlight being Jamesgang’s beanie tribute to Ronny.

I renewed my season ticket on Saturday. For many years work commitments on a Saturday made me an irregular attender at Celtic Park, usually able to attend midweek fixtures but rarely on a Saturday.

In 2010 I decided to learn to delegate a bit more at work and made the commitment to invest in a season ticket. At the same time I discovered CQN. I can’t underestimate how much pleasure both have given me ever since.

I have enjoyed so many aspects of our progress this season and look forward to the new season with confidence. There are so many positives. I admit to some worries after the Hamilton defeat, but that was really the turning point of the season. Since we established Broony and Nir Bitton as a partnership we haven’t looked back. Love the way Nir controls a game. I’ve noticed he sometimes seems to take 10- 15 minutes at the start of a match to get into that metronomic rhythm, but he then rarely misplaces a pass and seems to have so much time on the ball. Some of his touches against Inverness on Sunday were exceptional. Scott Brown has had by far his best season playing alongside him.

We thought big Fraser would be hard to replace. Instead we ended up with probably the best free transfer ever in Craig Gordon. Not only a shot stopper, I can’t remember any of our keepers who came anywhere near his distribution.

It’s been a pleasure watching Virgil and Jason – love the way they play football from the back. I think Jason is returning to Man City as a much improved player, which will surely stand us in good stead.

None of us knew anything about him when he turned up last August. We know plenty now, and he returns to City as a Belgian internationalist.

How does Izzy keep up that work rate game after game?

From my seat in 108 I get a close up view of his attacking skills. He seems to be involved in so many of our moves which lead to goals. I would be happy if he stayed with us for the rest of his career, although I agree that a back-up wouldn’t go amiss.

Our two January signings from Dundee United gave us a boost and I think both will hit the ground running next season. Stuart Armstrong could be a mainstay of the team for many years.

Stefan Johansen became the player we thought we had signed 16 months ago and is a tireless example to others. Leigh Griffiths has buckled down and improved so much as a team player, and no longer gets caught offside umpteen times in each match. I think Liam Henderson is a tremendous prospect.

So we face a couple of barren months, but the anticipation of next season will keep me going.

If that mob are promoted I will be disappointed, but they offer no threat to us. I have enjoyed attending games without their bile. I didn’t attend the semi-final and I won’t attend any games against them if they do come up. I would be happy if we never played them again. However that is now out of our hands. I cannot see them as a force again.

Sunday showed what Celtic Park can be and we have much to look forward to.

    Go Ronny go.

  14. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

Auldheid, when our rivals of over 100 years passed into the afterlife, a statement from Celtic would have sealed the coffin lid. It could have been appropriately worded aknowledging their demise while leaving sufficient room in welcoming back a new version.

I know you, like me are sick of their continued history lies and those lies are slowly becoming the accepted trurh to all but a few on blogs like this.

Celtic let us down by doing and saying nothing.

Tom, I hope to God you are right: Skippy, Mick and Pears, though past their best, might just make the difference over 2 legs.

    Here’s hoping!!!

  16. Mike in Toronto –

I have no doubt whatsoever that some teams have at different times “lay down” to Rangers, but only when they have nothing to lose except the game.

Motherwell have a tremendous amount to lose from this tie.

  17. would love a pearson driving run into the box to slot home from 12 yards!! hoping the sharpness of SPL team will show tonight!

  18. Full house at Ibrox tonight. Must be fancy dress at Ibrox cos lots of people dressed as blue seats.

Or perhaps Scotland has just taken to completely lying about everything.

    Oh wait……

  19. ACGR –

Are you seriously suggesting that all Celtic had to do was say The Rangers are a new club and every Gers fan would have simply accepted it, or that the great lie would never have got off the ground?

    You seriously believe that?

  20. Although these two lines make my heart ache

“What does it mean when you belong to someone

When you carry his name and you carry it on.”

Neil Mullane Finn and Brian Timothy Finn

    :o)

  21. On early evidence….don’t be putting ur mortgage on Motherwell….could be a dangerous thing

  22. Auldheid I’ve just read back. So you buy into the social unrest theory for celtics silence.

So let me get this right, the whole country is so scared of rangers fans that we will completely lie as a nation to appease them?
