SFA keen to change others while retaining their architect of destruction

1003

SFA chief executive, Stewart Regan, clearly sees opportunity among the carnage that is Scottish football at the moment as he leaked plans to ambush clubs into a radical overhaul of the league structures to the media yesterday.

Henry McLeish made several recommendations in his paper on the future of our game, one of which was for a smaller professional setup of two leagues (SPL 1 and SPL 2), sitting on top of a grass-roots pyramid of community based clubs, as well as a 10-team top division.  I agreed with both recommendations but relegation-dodgers in the SPL refused to countenance such a deal.

While it seems a 10-club top division is as far away as ever, the SFA are keen to push through a SPL 2 proposal before the start of the new season, something which borders on ultra-ambitious.

An unattributed SFA source (surely Regan himself) briefed BBC’s Jim Spence on their plans but the language was curious:

“Someone has to take a lead and sort out the internal bickering and point scoring and also to ensure that the Rangers situation never happens again.

“We need to use the mood for change among supporters in the country to tackle the current inertia and do what is right for the game.

“Change has to be democratic, but the time for talking has passed. We need action now to save the game.

“The fans are demanding fundamental change. The Rangers situation has intensified the need for a resolution and, over the next few weeks, we will meet with the SPL and SFL to find a solution.”

In order to “ensure the Rangers situation never happens again”, why don’t the SFA start by ensuring former directors of Rangers, who participated in the controversial EBT scheme which precipitated the crisis, are removed from the SFA board?

The SFA president received loans from Rangers EBT which he did not repay despite the club going bust last week.  There is a belief that those loans were never meant to be repaid and that many of Rangers EBT loans were accompanied by written confirmation that they were never to be repaid, making these ‘loans’ an illegal tax scam.

The SFA chief executive claimed to have investigated and cleared the president of any wrong-doing.  No one else is aware of this investigation.  There is a suspicion that all he did was listen to the president’s version of events, compounding an already dreadful situation for the SFA.

We would love to hear how Mr Ogilvie explained why he didn’t repay his loan.

Two weeks ago we spoke about the SFAs inadequate corporate governance on these matters.  If only corporate governance was the extent of the problem, they appear quite shameless.

“Someone has to take the lead…. tackle the current inertia and do what is right for the game”.

Sack the clown before you start to preach to the rest of the game.

    Boumsong eh?

I always thought that the huns got a good deal when they sold him to Newcastle.

On a whole new completely different subject,

I wonder why Graeme Souness got £30,000 out of the EBT scheme, allegedly.

And on another whole new and completely unrelated subject,

I wonder if Rangers have ever transferred a player to Everton, just wondering like.

And now for something completely different

I wonder if Walter Smith, ever received an EBT from rangers while he was the manager at a top EPL club?

    And my final new topic

It’s just as well that the Senior management team over at Ibrox haven’t been using the EBTs as a brown envelope system to pass tax free payments to ex employees, because that would probably be illegal.

Anyway excuse my unrelated random thoughts..

Really love how Boumsong liberally use the word ‘payment’ in the quotes attributed.

Scottish football has truly descended into farce and is now a laughing stock with the Club12 fixture list.

If Mingwall is really organising a Nuremberg rally for the hordes then I think it is time that they were all told to “f off” by the SPL/SFA – this week being as good a time as any.

Clubs in Scotland have to remember that the biggest part of their cash comes from ticket sales!

Piss off their customers and treat them like idiots and they are effed, look at Ratners* for example.

    * For all those youngsters, 20 years ago Ratners were the biggest and most succesful Jewelers in the UK, their owner said he sold crap and they wre gone within weeks!

    #####

The point about Ratner though was that he told the truth.

    They did sell crap.

What did for the company was the customers realisation that all along they had been buying rubbish they thought was quality. Their sense of betryal meant there was no way back for the company.

That, I think, is the analogy to be drawn with the situation in the SPL.

Allow a newco huns straight in and people will realise that they have been being conned for years.

    +++++

    Here’s where it/they really grind my gears…

Let’s say that Agent Whyte is telling the truth and he did put an end to the EBT shenanigans. How on earth could they now afford to pay those players the same wages (net)?

Oh aye, just forgo paying any taxes at all.

And that is exactly what they did do. However, they are no longer falling foul of the SPL rules re player registration/dual contracts.

I’ve said it before on here: it made no sense, given what we knew this time last year, to offer the massive bumper contracts (and extensions) to certain players unless there was a very specific underlying reason to do so (like ensuring ‘proper’ registrations are handed over ‘cos they knew a storm was coming re contracts).

  21. Winter break this season.

Blair also explained the rationale behind the league’s first winter break since the 2002/03 season, which will take place after the January 2 fixtures.

The break means the Scottish Cup fourth round, when top-flight side’s enter the competition, will this season take place on December 1 and 2.

“Supporters have often told us that they favour a winter break,” Blair added.

“Indeed, we have always been open to reviving the break but fitting it into the schedule can be a problem. With no World Cup or European Championship next summer, we are able to finish our own season slightly later and incorporate a shutdown covering two weekends in January.”

The winter break means more midweek fixtures, with a midweek card at the end of November, in late January and in February.

Indeed. Every now and again I have another wee look at the fixture list and I have another wee laugh :-)

  23. Had a load of texts just after 9am saying that we had Aberdeen at home on the first day of the season and Motherwell on 2nd January.

Just had the chance to look at the entire fixture list and see that we have Club(foot)12 on Boxing Day which seems very suspicious considering we played the dead lot on Dec 28th last year.

I also see that we have Ross County away and the following week Inverness away. An absolute joke which, as usual shows absolutely no consideration for travelling Celtic supporters!!
