Shiels has history on his side tomorrow

923

It would be easy for Celtic to take their eye of the ball.  A huge Scottish Cup game at Tannadice last week, which was more difficult than the score-line suggests, before Neil Lennon had what will have been a few traumatic days.  The tension in the west of Scotland ahead of next weekend’s game at Ibrox is already tangible; in truth, we could do with some quiet preparation time ahead of tomorrow’s Scottish Communities League Cup Final against Kilmarnock.

Kilmarnock have no such worries.  The Cup Final tomorrow is their season.  Out of the Scottish Cup and certain to finish in the bottom six of the SPL, their focus will be absolute tomorrow.  Kenny Shiels’ team have won only four league games since October  but you will not need me to tell you two of those victories were against Rangers.

Two home wins within six days against Rangers and Aberdeen, the latter on 3 December, suggested Killie were certain to challenge for a European place this season, but things have moved south since then.  They beat St Mirren on 2 January at Rugby Park before that impressive performance dumped Rangers on their bums at Ibrox last month.

Kenny Shiels made it onto Radio Scotland during the week to tell the nation that Celtic were so good it would be a travesty if they didn’t win the treble.  I totally agree (and I’m warming to this guy) but Kenny knows exactly what he is doing.  He intends to win the cup tomorrow and will know every potential weakness in the Celtic team.

History suggests he has a decent chance.  Since winning five consecutive finals (until 1969), Celtic competed in 20 finals, winning only seven.  We have some form to make up in this tournament.

No giving the ball away cheaply, as Kilmarnock are good at keeping it. That’s why Sammi, Vic and Ki are important for today.

If Brown’s carrying an injury, don’t play him. We have perfectly good enough players to come in without the need to resort to him ‘playing through the pain barrier’.

I had a look at the blog around midnight and noticed that Rory Mcillroy was getting grief from us,I wondered what he had done, why that could be happening.

A young man who has brought nothing but glory to the people of Northern Ireland this last couple of years, why so much grief???.

I tried to go back to find out what he had done that was so bad that the Northern Irish dislike hime so much,One thing that I read was that he draped a red hand of Ulster Flag around his neck after winning a tournement,I always thought that he was born In Northern Ireland, but maybe not,Another was that he was a catholic who went to a protestant school, big Deal, did anyone ever think that it may have been a better school that his parents wanted for their son, not whether it was a Catholic or Protestant school that he went to.

People can be so fickle at times,Instead of embracing Rory For all he has achieved,he gets slagged of for Wrapping an Ulster flag round his neck, shame???,it beggers belief.

I went to a game many years ago,and a young man had a Saltire that he waved when a goal was scored for Celtic,he was vilified for doing it,probably a Scotsman who wanted to show that he was proud of where he came from, but he got hell for it,disgraceful, on the hecklers part.

These things make it hard to come on the blog now,It’s drifting away from a football blog, and becoming very political.

Final word, I was having a few drinks with a few friends from the blog and it was mentioned by someone, that they should invite Anthony Stokes to the golf outing at Aberdour,I asked why,and he came back that if Stokesy was at the Golf,Rory Mcillroy would turn up as well,They were the best of friends.I wonder if the Golfers on the day would have accepted him,by the way, Rory is a Celtic supporter, according to whoever gave me the information, re Stoksey.

  11. Kayal33 –

    Point taken.

However, if Celtic are given an invitation to move to one of the English leagues, you’d be happy for us to turn it down in the hope of being part of some possible future European league that isn’t even being discussed and might never happen?

    I certainly wouldn’t.

  12. Morning all, Beautiful spring morning, looking forward to the short trip to Hampden this afternoon. Hoping for a victory to give us the first leg of the treble. Was thinking back to twelve months ago and how I felt leaving Hampden after losing the final to them especially having been subjected to their “songs” from the majority of them at that end of the ground for the duration of the match.

Here we are today, and how things are so different. Despite reading the excellent predictions of their imminent demise from Paul, Phil Mac, Rangers Tax Case and many fine posters on here, I could not have imagined what would have come out to the public domain thus far, with hopefully more to come.

So on this fine St Patrick’s weekend I wish the bhoys well for today and in the true Celtic tradition Win or Lose I know the fans at the game make us proud to be part of the Celtic family today.

    HH, Dan.

  13. Pre match nerves! There have been too many disappointments in the League Cup over the years. I`m still very hopeful though. Come on the Celts!

I would turn it down as i don’t think we should be playing in england. The board of directors would jump at the chance because they will see the £ signs. If, and its still a huge if, the opportunity arose to move to england i would hope that the support are at least consulted before a decision is made. I think it would be very close between those who want to move down south and those against.

Would the big clubs in small countries you are talking about be the likes of Apoel

I do have to agree with you that Celtic are a Scottish club and have to play in a Scottish league

  17. Anywhere city centreish opening early. Just off my flight from Gatwick and my geography of glasgee is average at best.

  18. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

Assuming we get an invite to the First Division in England and we accept, I take it we would need two give the SPL 2 years notice of our intention to leave.

So we are talking a minimum of three years before we leave.

How far away is an Atlantic League?

If we are in the English First would we get/want an invite?

  22. Joining the English league at a lower level always carries with it the risk of players wanting out due to, ahem, a lowering of standards. Could having European football one year, with expected promotion to the Championship the next, be a way of straddling these stormy waters?

I doubt a club, ostensibly representing a national league in Europe, could do so while playing in another country’s league, but these are my semi-somnambulant musings thoughts this morrow.

I’m sure such a ‘fine administrator of the game’ (see J Traynor next week) will have paid these loans back in full, no? Anyone?

Have to agree with you. Last night people were up in arms complaining about the choice of anthem the Irish rugby team uses.

I can’t stand it either but when you see what goes on in the world, something like that is the least of our problems.

Can be fatal to look beyond the next game but my thoughts are very much on next week at the pox. No doubt in my mind with nothing to lose they will be sent out to kick us up & down the pitch. This game is all they have left for this season so lets take this away from them as well. I would like to see us play a skeleton team perhaps even the under 19’s. Why take the chance in having a serious injury to one of our stars? We’ll be partying for 90 mins no matter what’s happening out on the pitch but could you imagine the humiliation if we hump them with our 19’s. I know most wont see it this way & would prefer to field a full strength side in the hope to run up cricket score but what’s the point we’ve won the league anyway & they’re finished.
