When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child. The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.
The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point. When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.
Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims. On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.
Gerry explains the campaign below:
“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.
“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.
“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support. It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.
“I look forward to your support.

I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

In their recommendation to the shareholders to vote against the resolution they are clear that they did not go to the CFCB, they were satisfied with the SFA’s assurances.

To keep it simple this was the resolution
This AGM requests the Board exercise the provision contained in the Procedural Rules Governing the UEFA Club Financial Control Body Article 10 with jurisdiction and investigation responsibilities identified in articles 3 & 11 (Note 1), by referring/bringing to the attention of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), the licensing administration practices of the Scottish Football Association (SFA), requesting the CFCB undertake a review and investigate the SFA’s implementation of UEFA & SFA license compliance requirements, with regard to qualification, administration and granting of licenses to compete in football competitions under both SFA and UEFA jurisdiction, since the implementation of the Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations of 2010.
The rest was the supporting statement, the above is whats missing from the prospectus published version.

Do you know who is going to speak re this at the agm? (always assuming they are given the opportunity)
My opinion is that the CFCB angle is the way to go.
IF the board confirm they relied on the integrity of the SFA on this matter when the CFCB avenue was open to them then that would be very concerning.
For me,this has never been about “bashing the board” but more about uncovering the facts on what looks like more dodgy dealings from the SFA with a view to using the outcomes to reform an organisation which is clearly not fit for purpose or as a vehicle to help “get us out of Dodge”.
If it turns out the custodians of our club appear to be unwilling to take this prima facie case forward (in fact they are against it) I will be giving very serious consideration to the choices I make in future.
The very least Auldheid deserves is a coherent explanation to him on where he has got things wrong in his analysis

Just spoke to my mum on phone there to see what the situation was when i was born in
59 and my brother in 61. She said that she had sickness but our family doctor was happy with the drug she was currently prescribing and never ordered the thalidomide drug for anyone in her practice. Very fortunate in that respect.

As you know we are currently working on the CQN Annual 2014.
BRTH sent me an article this morning and said that writing it brought a tear to his eye. My job was to correct any typos, add a heading and prepare it for the designer. I can tell you that this is the first time ever that such an article has brought a wee tear to my eyes too. It is about three very special kids and the role you lot have played in their lives. BRTH has a message from one of the families and photographs of one young lady to share with us in the CQN Annual. How she has grown and how well she looks!

Has anyone seen a full copy of the annual report together with all Notes? The one online ends abruptly at note 7 stating “Copies of the Annual Report & Accounts together with the Notice and Notes of the 2013 AGM will be issued to all
shareholders in due course.”
I noticed that is the same as previous years. Does anyone know if you only get the full notes to the accounts if you take a paper copy?

I’m happy they have reproduced it faithfully although they have split it up which is the source of my confusion, the resolution is on page 2 and the supporting statement is on pages 7 & 8
The meeja are only reporting the supporting statement and making it all about sevco.
The boards recommendation to vote against it is accompanied with an explanation on what they had done, they are satisfied with the SFA’s assurance that our interests were protected.
Thats a bit different from what P67 claimed yesterday, that they took it as far as they could.
