Sinclair really wanted Celtic, overinvestment… now January

620

Scoring minutes after making your debut doesn’t guarantee a great career at a club, but Scott Sinclair gave himself an excellent start with his winning goal at Tynecastle. Leigh Griffiths lead-up work was magnificent. The Hearts defence had no answer.

Scott’s transfer took weeks (and a lot of money) to complete but it was the player’s tenacity to come to Celtic which decided the matter.  I hear Celtic met Aston Villa’s initial target price early in the negotiations, but Villa decided to hold their cards for a few weeks in an attempt to induce other bidders.  Scott was clear from the off that there was only one place he was going, but while Villa sat tight, there was a worry that another club would come in with a seriously large wage offer.  The deal happened when the player continued with the mantra, “I’m going to Celtic or nowhere”.  This is a guy who really wants to play for Celtic.

Apart from Tony Watt’s excellent chance yesterday, which should have brought Hearts level, the home side didn’t have a chance worthy of the name. A policy of throwing yourself to the ground inside the box doesn’t count, so we can be happy with how our defence is performing with Kolo Toure in the team.  There’s still a long way to go, but the direction of travel is clear.  Watt and Conon Sammon will cause a lot of damage in the Premiership this season, but on the evidence so far, Celtic should outperform their 15 point winning margin last term.

So disappointed to hear Dave King’s £30m – £50m overinvestment isn’t going to happen until January. This guy has been so transparent. Honestly, they get what they deserve, there’s no helping or telling them.  They backed a hostile takeover with a fantasy manifesto, while putting the thumbscrews on their club, to the extent it had to go cap in hand to its only source of funding, and hawk their commercial rights in the process.

As we’ve said here for years, the only people who can really damage a football club are its own supporters, in this case, with their inability to consider the consequences of the next action.

Running a football club is hard (serious understatement alert).  You’re going to enjoy how Dave King finds this out.

Looking forward to reading Paul67’s leader today on the news that Kris Commons has been left out of our UEFA squad for the Champions League final qualifier.

Morning Bhoys Craig Gordon is a very good goal keeper but in my opinion his form has dipped and he is making to many errors now. I feel certain if he had real competition for his first team place he would quickly get back to his best. H.H.

  4. Apologies my mistake, Gordon is 33, 34 in December. I said ‘a bit’ of a liability, there is a difference. With his previous injury problems that’s fairly obvious.

  9. Morning all.

It would be strange if supporters did not criticise players (although on here it often appears to be the Board and our CEO in particular) and I have been well known to do so with regards, e.g. to last season of Commons, Mulgrew and our captain. I thought all 3 were past it. So far this season, our captain is proving me well wrong.

Imo, too often nowadays, on CQN people overreact with what they contribute. For my own sanity, I seldom read CQN during a match. (If we lose, I simply ignore it.) Too many act like spoiled weans. We have no divine right to win everything; and in Scotland the Establishment will always try and ensure that doesn’t happen, as we know all too well.

Criticise but be constructive about it. Imo, the likes of Bitton and Forrest are good players; let’s encourage them rather boo as too many did to Efe recently. Almost as bad as the booing meted out to Fergus. That still makes me sick.

    Craig Gordon

Almost an ever-present player in last few seasons.

Holds ( sic) one of the best records in domestic fitba

Has at least 5 more good years in top flight

Suffering from constant change in personnel in front of him.

Very confident he will be forming a good understanding with Kolo, then they will then conduct the rest of the defence (sic) as the season progresses. If those two reach a good understanding then all the talk about changing our No1 will go away.

The mistakes will still happen…they always do and so whit!!!

Anyway, glad to get that off my chest.

No of course not – justified and constructive criticism always adds to the debate – however the bandwagon that earlier denigrated Bronnie and Jamsie, has now moved on to Craig.

I really don’t know what he has done to deserve it.

There are of course those who would want all our players to come from ROI, or, be Catholic from NI – dreamers!!!!

I seen a post some five or six weeks ago on here that described Paddy Roberts, as a ‘one trick pony’ – a week or two later it was being ‘parroted’ on the media – why give them the ammunition – they don’t need it!!!

    ………………………………………

Shameful post akin to the post last week suggesting that criticism of Efe might be related to his skin colour. The poster had the good grace to apologise next day. Now it is being suggested that criticism of Craig Gordon might be related to his religious background or ethnicity (or lack of a preferred one).

    Bollocks!

  17. Gordon’s major flaw is his decision making at cross balls or in general when the ball is in the air. I think this is mostly down to being afraid to take a sore one. I like my keepers to come out & take everything out he leans in with a flap or a punch & often gets little on the ball. This has been a flaw with him since his early days & has cost us in Europe more than once. At 33 it’s unlikely he’s going to improve on this so personally I’m all for finding a replacement, Vorm was a well regarded keeper at Swansea & there’s no shame in not displacing Hugo Loris (Top 3 keeper in the world) at Spurs. He may well be much smaller than Gordon but from what I remember he plays much bigger than his size where as Gordon (at cross balls) may as well be 5 foot 4.

  18. When Gordon signed I rated him as a keeper but never dreamed he’d enjoy the injury free stretch he has.

So complete bonus in that respect.

He’s never been strong in dealing with the cross ball. Nothing new in that regard.

I don’t he’s complacent or needs his ideas bucked up cos he’s a diligent professional and I think probably his own worst critic.

But I actually like that BR is doing due diligence on the keeper position and all others.

    Saltires,

Very close to the mark on Craig Gordon, nothing more important than playing with a settled back four and definitely a solid and settled central pair, interesting that his best time was with Virgil and Jason in front of him. I think that he has played with 5 different partnerships in the four CL qualifiers and the Hearts game, get the central pairing sorted and Craig will get back to his best. As for his positioning at corners, starting point should be a couple of yards behind the line of the penalty spot, that’s pretty much how I played it in over 30 years between the sticks, hands up to make yourself seem bigger.

  21. Ellboy

My opinion of Vorm is that his strength is as a shot stopper – just like Gordon.

He is capable of stunning saves, but also of howlers.

Observe, magnificent saves and also a clanger to hand Leicester the win: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRTotRI9eFg

I think if signed he would be good competition for Gordon, however I’m not convinced he is better.
