Sinclair really wanted Celtic, overinvestment… now January

620

Scoring minutes after making your debut doesn’t guarantee a great career at a club, but Scott Sinclair gave himself an excellent start with his winning goal at Tynecastle. Leigh Griffiths lead-up work was magnificent. The Hearts defence had no answer.

Scott’s transfer took weeks (and a lot of money) to complete but it was the player’s tenacity to come to Celtic which decided the matter.  I hear Celtic met Aston Villa’s initial target price early in the negotiations, but Villa decided to hold their cards for a few weeks in an attempt to induce other bidders.  Scott was clear from the off that there was only one place he was going, but while Villa sat tight, there was a worry that another club would come in with a seriously large wage offer.  The deal happened when the player continued with the mantra, “I’m going to Celtic or nowhere”.  This is a guy who really wants to play for Celtic.

Apart from Tony Watt’s excellent chance yesterday, which should have brought Hearts level, the home side didn’t have a chance worthy of the name. A policy of throwing yourself to the ground inside the box doesn’t count, so we can be happy with how our defence is performing with Kolo Toure in the team.  There’s still a long way to go, but the direction of travel is clear.  Watt and Conon Sammon will cause a lot of damage in the Premiership this season, but on the evidence so far, Celtic should outperform their 15 point winning margin last term.

So disappointed to hear Dave King’s £30m – £50m overinvestment isn’t going to happen until January. This guy has been so transparent. Honestly, they get what they deserve, there’s no helping or telling them.  They backed a hostile takeover with a fantasy manifesto, while putting the thumbscrews on their club, to the extent it had to go cap in hand to its only source of funding, and hawk their commercial rights in the process.

As we’ve said here for years, the only people who can really damage a football club are its own supporters, in this case, with their inability to consider the consequences of the next action.

Running a football club is hard (serious understatement alert).  You’re going to enjoy how Dave King finds this out.

Thank you, sincerely. At last someone else has commented on this (I’ve made references to it a few times on here and on Twitter with no response, hey ho).

WE all get annoyed at some of the stuff on say the BBC Sports site. BUt for their very own official site to indicate that the last game they played last season was a league game in April against Livingston is complete denial in anyone’s book!

  2. Is it a good idea to replace our Giant Goalie Gordon with Miniature Man Between The Sticks Michael Vorm?

What’s better for defending cross balls?

    Positioning?

An extra 5 inches in height?

A cohesive defensive unit in front of you?

Your full back stopping the bliddy cross in the first place?

    All of the above?

For the record, I think that pocket size Michael Vorm is a good goalie.

Doubly for the record, i think Gargantuan Craig Gordon is a good goalie.

Indeed. Not long since Craig Gordon was being lauded as one of the best pieces of business we ever carried out. I agree. Now , they are queueing up to slaughter him. Perhaps he’s lost some of his sharpness, and Rodgers will no doubt be assessing him, as he is assessing everyone, and a decision will be made, but every player goes through spells like this. He was playing in front of a disjointed defence for a long time, and saved us on countless occasions in matches, which , though not absolving him from blame for current errors of judgement, you would think would let some people cut him some slack as he attempts to recover form.

Scott Brown. Been an absolute star for us. Wears heart on sleeve every game. Deserves a testimonial next year in my opinion. I hope he stays on at CP after his playing days are over.

There’s nothing wrong with an honest critique of a player, but no one deserves the ‘ useless’ tag.

  5. The mystery of the unseen assults on all the sevco players at the cup final. No footage of the attacks and no evidence of any injuries. Also a mysterious non pitch invasion by sevco hooligans. In spite of TV evidence it didnt happen – another unexplainable illusion.

I remember the days when, if a Celtic player had a dip in form or made a couple of mistakes, the supporters would get behind (support) him and give him every encouragement. Nowadays a couple of off-days results in the miscreant being hounded incessantly.

First it was Scott Brown, with some posters even wanting him sold, now it’s Craig Gordon who is the fall guy. What short memories some people have

Tam, I’m a member of the old brigade’ as well and I do get behind the players – I have said that often over the past few weeks. I’m not advocating getting rid of Gordon and in the piece I wrote yesterday (http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/where-are-we-now/) I said that the goalkeeping coach needs to work with him on his positional sense and decision making:

“Craig Gordon has given the manager a conundrum already this season. His ability to pull top drawer saves out of the bag is unquestionable and has made a significant difference already. However, his decision making and positional sense (especially at cross balls) will continue to cause us problems this season. The goalkeeping coach needs to work with him on this and with Bailly injured, we need decent competition for the keeper.”

This board is a safe(ish) place where we can discuss our team, it’s successes, failures and shortcomings. Like a virtual pub where we can all have an opinion. get behind the team by all means, but also recognise where the work has to be done to improve it!

Hopefully Brendan has the players up for it and switched on mentality. Motherwell will fancy their chances of catching us on the blind side.

  25. Bringing in another keeper is a solid decision. Gordon had done very well to stay fit after his previous problems. However at 32 years old he is a bit of a liability in terms of his fitness and we have no other good cover. Vorm is a good keeper and a realistic threat to the no1 position. So it’ll keep Craig’s concentration levels high and provide good cover if needed.
