Social Values headline Celtic AGM

1105

Our Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park this morning, was a more prosaic affair than last year’s.  Chief executive, Peter Lawwell, told the meeting last season’s on-field and financial results were “fantastic” in difficult circumstances.

He repeatedly referred to the “balance” required between immediate expenditure policies and judging the long-term requirements of the club, adding that in recent years, “Rangers went bust, Hearts went bust, and Hibs were relegated.”

For the first time the AGM heard from the Celtic FC Foundation chief executive.  Tony Hamilton was given a video slot alongside the chairman, chief exec and the manager and he spoke about how the Foundation was interwoven into the fabric of the club, from the top to bottom, and of our history.

The alleviation of poverty is a major target for 2015, building on work the Foundation carried out this year in north and east Glasgow, Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire.  Tony added, “If things weren’t tough we wouldn’t need a charity – but they are.

“We’re deadly serious about making a difference.” I’ll try to get the video, it’s worth watching.

Ronny Deila laid out his objectives for this season: qualification for the Champions League, win the treble, develop players and play attacking, attractive, football.  Peter Lawwell didn’t want to use the managerial transition over the summer as an excuse for failing to reach the Champions League, but suggested it was grounds for mitigation.

The chairman, chief executive and manager all liberally infused their comments with transformational effect Champions League qualification would have on the club next season.

The Celtic Trust proposed two resolutions, the first of which, concerning club-fan interaction, they agreed to adjourn.  In his video message, chairman Ian Bankier informed the meeting that the directors would oppose the Living Wage resolution, but that they had entered into discussions with the staff on the matter, proposing that the starting pay for permanent staff is set at £7.85 per hour, which just happens to be equal to the Living Wage.

In response to this Jeanette Findlay, proposing the resolution on behalf of the Trust, reached the microphone and tore up her prepared speech.  She did, however, urge the club to go the final mile and become an accredited Living Wage employer.

Peter Lawwell informed the meeting that he would be meeting John Guidetti’s agent within the next two weeks and that he is waiting to hear back from Kris Commons representatives on his latest offer.

Ronny Deila added that it was important for the club to retain its top players, giving Guidetti and Justin Denayer special mention, but insisted it was wrong to give into demands from any one player three times the going rate for other senior players.

  1. For over a week I’ve been telling CQN about the LC semi being played at Ibrox and I was laughed at and ridiculed. Now all of a sudden it’s the talk of the steamie. Up yours Canamalar :-)

    Evening all,

Bit of bad news I’m afraid. Some of you will have met CQN’r Frantic07 recently and will no doubt have noticed he had trouble speaking. Unfortunately this has been diagnosed as cancer in one of his vocal chords. A treatment schedule has been put in place and, on a positive note, it seems it’s been caught pretty early.

  3. bob loblaw,

Murrayfield is definitely a no go, the amount of police needed would put too big a dent in the huns purse.

Film 4 at 11.15 will give you a taste of what to expect when we meet newco…

  4. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon ....The angels are with Wee Oscar in Heaven.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

Some major European Financial Survey resulted in confirmation of Celtic as 3rd best financially run Club in Europe. This was about a month ago and there was no mention of this fantastic achievement in SMSM, or at today’s AGM ……!!?? Why was this not recognised by out unbiased media, or even by our Club ?

  6. There’s no way they would just announce the game being at the bronx (as that would mean the huns got more tickets as they can’t do a 50/50 split), so it would have to be some sort of coin flip shenanigans

It might well end up like that but it won’t be a ” fix” as some on here would think, the paranoia on here is a joke at times

  8. They might have a toss of the coin for the venue for LC semi either Celtic Park or I***x,sorry(cant say that word).

Ps if this is the case Celtic better get clarification about the toss of the coin and what the outcome is before the coin is tossed.Remember the outcome when big Joe Jordan was involved before.

  9. Prestonpans Bhoy –

I heard last week that the SPFL wanted the Celtic v Rangers semi-final at Ibrox and the other one at Celtic Park. No toss of a coin. No deference to first out the hat.

  10. Where are the FOD gonna manage to find a coin?

Exactly mate but it won’t stop the usual on here telling you different, the scottish cup draw was a fix even though we got a team a division below and the Huns got a division higher, how does that work ?

There’s no way that game will be played at Celtic Park, haven’t they been punished enough?

BGX – sorry, fish cakes were calling.

The liquidation of Rangers is till in process. This week it emerged that the liquidators had secured something like £24m from various means. That will be the start of the pot from which the final pay outs to the various creditors will be made.

As for the team playing Hearts tomorrow. I honestly have no idea what thy should be called. But I do know that they cannot be the same team – Rangers Football Club Ltd – whose name is atop the Ibrox gates.

    Off to watch “The Missing”…

“I think Greenpinata mentioned earlier we should aspire to be like a Southampton or Brentford”

With the greatest respect our wires have crossed. I was referring to their training academies which are the envy of the British game.

Yes I stand by that statement, Lennoxtown should be the equivalent of anything Southampton has to offer.

Unfortunately it is not, yet the investment is similar.

Cheers, would have liked to go along if I’d known.

Not been able to keep up with CQN of late, will be at CQN corner tommorow to meet the usual suspects.

2 grandkids staying with us tonight, they have just discovered that the hoover has a self recoiling plug. I now know what to get them for Christmas.

  20. Does anyone know when rugby six nations is scheduled for? As that may rule out murrayfield anyway, never mind any logistical issues.

It’s the lack of information that irritates me. The draw was nearly two weeks ago, most of us have worked out by now, there must be issues somewhere or venues and dates would have been announced by now. As usual fans are kept in the dark.

I was 1 of those that were scepticle(to say the least). Still don’t see how the SPFL could justify playing at Ibrox when CP is the bigger stadia. Maybe the moon is made of cheese afterall ;)

  22. Lennons team of last year..we would be laughing at the prospect of playing the hun…at anytime..at any venue…just stating it..

If anyone has got a spare five minutes before bedtime could they go on to the BBC complaints department and remind them that raingers won’t be facing their biggest game since they came out of administration when they play hearts tomorrow as they are in the process of liquidation which finalises on the 9th december. This was on the sports section of Reporting Scotland tonight.

Sad but obvious to say, there are lots more better English youngsters than there are Scottish and Southampton has a huge catchment area (also a great place to play football).

Though you are right we really don’t get value for the money we’ve invested in the youth setup.
