Social Values headline Celtic AGM

1105

Our Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park this morning, was a more prosaic affair than last year’s.  Chief executive, Peter Lawwell, told the meeting last season’s on-field and financial results were “fantastic” in difficult circumstances.

He repeatedly referred to the “balance” required between immediate expenditure policies and judging the long-term requirements of the club, adding that in recent years, “Rangers went bust, Hearts went bust, and Hibs were relegated.”

For the first time the AGM heard from the Celtic FC Foundation chief executive.  Tony Hamilton was given a video slot alongside the chairman, chief exec and the manager and he spoke about how the Foundation was interwoven into the fabric of the club, from the top to bottom, and of our history.

The alleviation of poverty is a major target for 2015, building on work the Foundation carried out this year in north and east Glasgow, Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire.  Tony added, “If things weren’t tough we wouldn’t need a charity – but they are.

“We’re deadly serious about making a difference.” I’ll try to get the video, it’s worth watching.

Ronny Deila laid out his objectives for this season: qualification for the Champions League, win the treble, develop players and play attacking, attractive, football.  Peter Lawwell didn’t want to use the managerial transition over the summer as an excuse for failing to reach the Champions League, but suggested it was grounds for mitigation.

The chairman, chief executive and manager all liberally infused their comments with transformational effect Champions League qualification would have on the club next season.

The Celtic Trust proposed two resolutions, the first of which, concerning club-fan interaction, they agreed to adjourn.  In his video message, chairman Ian Bankier informed the meeting that the directors would oppose the Living Wage resolution, but that they had entered into discussions with the staff on the matter, proposing that the starting pay for permanent staff is set at £7.85 per hour, which just happens to be equal to the Living Wage.

In response to this Jeanette Findlay, proposing the resolution on behalf of the Trust, reached the microphone and tore up her prepared speech.  She did, however, urge the club to go the final mile and become an accredited Living Wage employer.

Peter Lawwell informed the meeting that he would be meeting John Guidetti’s agent within the next two weeks and that he is waiting to hear back from Kris Commons representatives on his latest offer.

Ronny Deila added that it was important for the club to retain its top players, giving Guidetti and Justin Denayer special mention, but insisted it was wrong to give into demands from any one player three times the going rate for other senior players.

  1. mike in Toronto,

Good post, indeed PL has a dilemma, some of which is out of his control.

However Celtic are different from most clubs in respect that they are in the top ten of clubs where the supporters provide the most income.

I hear that, and, as with most things, that is a double edged sword…..

It means the fans are, in some respect, more important to the business than in other clubs. usually, this means that the fans should have greater rights. That is how the business operates. From that perspective, PL has done a shockingly poor job at engaging his chief source of income … the fans.

But, the flip side is that, institutionally, Celtic is crippled because it plays in a third world league (and, gets cheated in that league, to boot). In spite of that, Celtic has thrived financially in very difficult circumstances. From that perspective, PL has done a commendable job.

    In total agreement .

There just doesn’t seem to be a willingness to push this from the Board and certainly the SFA will try deflect their collusion with the deady bears.

A mass campaign by the support is the only way we may achieve something

I guess that analysis sums up the predicament PL is in.

Still he gets well remunerated for it.

The exiled Tim. I don’t believe that folk that think we are 10 million down due to Rangers absence really want to strangle them.

Nothing in that statement suggests action. The statement is deliberately lengthy full of legalese and verbose so as not to attract the press attention.

Never been a great Peter Lawwell fan, however credit where credit’s due, he came across well today. Great to here reference to a move to a better set up, I wonder if we are making any progress on a move or are we waiting on developments by others?

I’d take his problems, if it meant I got his salary. Is it too late to nominate myself for his job, or do I have to wait until next year’s AGM? :)

    Sadly can’t see that happening.

Everyone is too busy laughing at the hun.

It will hit home when it’s too late, and we slag thems off for doing feck all.

It took the support from a couple of other clubs to stop them staying in the spl last time, the Celtic support did nada, they were too busy eating their jelly and ice cream.

Then you have the 5 way handshake, which all the spl clubs were party to.

From the clubs point of view, it’s all about the bigot pound, everybody wants a share, from the sfa’s end, well, we all know what that is don’t we.

I have no doubts of your ability. But could you take the flak regardless of the job you do ?

Its one thing being called Liewell by supporters of a club playing out of Greyskull ( Sorry St Stives ) but being vilified equally as bad by our own.????

Friendly Fire is often the most dangerous.

Do you still want that nomination ?

I’d like to know how the national broadcaster thinks it can feel free to spout blatant lies to the viewer. This was no slip of the tongue from Currie.

You expect it from sleekit McCoist and clueless Bfdj, but surely the sports presenter has a responsibility to be factually correct.

A slap in the face to Deidco creditors.

    Emails off to bbc hopefully.

  19. Well done Home teams tonight, had 70/1 double correct scores. Brentford scored winner in added time

Feekin ref added more time and they almost got a third . Heart was in my breeks ! Makes up for last Saturday when I could not get my winning double on! Big Shuggy’s luck changing ! Herts 5 zilch tomorrow. !

I am in a conciliatory mood (its friday evening after all … and I’m about to leave the office, and go home to my lovely lady) …. so, how about we compromise? PL can keep his job … I’ll fly back every two weeks to check that he is doing okay, and he gives me …. say 30% of this salary? Deal?

  21. Fair play to these folk that hold a mobile phone at moments like that to record the goal for prosperity.

  23. Pedro has a hard job trying to keep everyone happy, the support, the media, his paymasters.

He does a feckin good job re his paymasters, a decent job re the media, they can print and say basicly what they want and get away with it, his hardest task is the support, he fails big time with the majority imo, and he is god for others.

    I had a job in the same mould as him once, the man in the middle, and I had more groups to keep happy than Pedro does, not easy, and I was paid a pittance, had I earned a 1/20th of what he is earning, it would have been the best job in the world >}
