Social Values headline Celtic AGM

1105

Our Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park this morning, was a more prosaic affair than last year’s.  Chief executive, Peter Lawwell, told the meeting last season’s on-field and financial results were “fantastic” in difficult circumstances.

He repeatedly referred to the “balance” required between immediate expenditure policies and judging the long-term requirements of the club, adding that in recent years, “Rangers went bust, Hearts went bust, and Hibs were relegated.”

For the first time the AGM heard from the Celtic FC Foundation chief executive.  Tony Hamilton was given a video slot alongside the chairman, chief exec and the manager and he spoke about how the Foundation was interwoven into the fabric of the club, from the top to bottom, and of our history.

The alleviation of poverty is a major target for 2015, building on work the Foundation carried out this year in north and east Glasgow, Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire.  Tony added, “If things weren’t tough we wouldn’t need a charity – but they are.

“We’re deadly serious about making a difference.” I’ll try to get the video, it’s worth watching.

Ronny Deila laid out his objectives for this season: qualification for the Champions League, win the treble, develop players and play attacking, attractive, football.  Peter Lawwell didn’t want to use the managerial transition over the summer as an excuse for failing to reach the Champions League, but suggested it was grounds for mitigation.

The chairman, chief executive and manager all liberally infused their comments with transformational effect Champions League qualification would have on the club next season.

The Celtic Trust proposed two resolutions, the first of which, concerning club-fan interaction, they agreed to adjourn.  In his video message, chairman Ian Bankier informed the meeting that the directors would oppose the Living Wage resolution, but that they had entered into discussions with the staff on the matter, proposing that the starting pay for permanent staff is set at £7.85 per hour, which just happens to be equal to the Living Wage.

In response to this Jeanette Findlay, proposing the resolution on behalf of the Trust, reached the microphone and tore up her prepared speech.  She did, however, urge the club to go the final mile and become an accredited Living Wage employer.

Peter Lawwell informed the meeting that he would be meeting John Guidetti’s agent within the next two weeks and that he is waiting to hear back from Kris Commons representatives on his latest offer.

Ronny Deila added that it was important for the club to retain its top players, giving Guidetti and Justin Denayer special mention, but insisted it was wrong to give into demands from any one player three times the going rate for other senior players.

  1. Makes sense to play the semi at Celtic Park, 10000 extra tickets @ £50 a head.

The other semi will be just right for the more compact Ibrox.

  4. Bgx,

There’s no fear about where the game is to be played. I think you are missing the point.

Agree, equality is not about tokenism. It is about equal status for equal ability.

Gender shortlists and tokenism are frankly degrading. In my opinion.

  9. Is the tedium over yet?.Have all the Celtic hating Celtic fans had their blog in the sun?.

Do we have a game tomorrow?.Are any of the aforementioned really interested?.

I think PL should stop Fracking in Scotland, supply the world with clean drinking water, supply the funds from his mega salary(Which he does not deserve, bye the way)to eradicate the Ebola virus.

Close down the sweat shops in India, and other 3rd world countries that supply football shirts with green and white hoops on them that nearly all Celtic fans buy, demand our players stop wearing Adidas,Nike, and other branded boots made in similar sweatshops previously mentioned(Big Yogi played in sannies, dont you know),make sure the part time pie sellers, who dont give a toss about the service they provide, are suitably paid for their non service. If wages were paid for being glaikit, most would be well above the LW.

Pay the LW to stewards whos job seems to be making life as difficult as possible for fans wanting to support their team.Disregard every rule in football and drag the SFA into court,on Res 12,and be thrown out of football.

Sack PL and offer his job,and salary,to everyone who says he is paid too much, and see how many turn down the chance.

In the words of Bob Geldorf”Give us yer fekin money, mines is all in offshore accounts”.

    Is their a game tomorrow?.

  10. Bgx,

I don’t think any stadia with a 50/50 split would hold any fear for this team.

Domestically our away form is arguably better than home form.

I’m also not so supremely confident a lenny team would do all that better than a Ronny team in a cup competition. That said, he’d still put out a team to pish all over that mob;)

whats this talk of the semi final not being at hampden

has there been any real word that hampden wont be ready

as far as i know the only issue is when it will get played because the police would rather arrest celtic fans in midweek than at the weekend

so all these conspiracy theories which involve the game being anywhere other than hampden are just tabloid style pish that belong in the daily record

in saying that if it doesnt get played at hampden then they will definitely play it at ibrox

  13. Geordie…aint ability i got worries on…its the fact that they imo have the honest mistake brigade at their back…and they would produce every trick in the book…

  14. My friends in Celtic,

If we must play “rangers” in the LC semi, I would love to play and humiliate them at paradise. However the thought of giving thems half our stadium would give me the boak.

I get that Celtic is a business, and has to be run like a business to make profit for its owners. From that perspective, PL has done a fair to decent job. Where he not done such a decent job is in finding a new place to play (which, to be fair, may be out of his control) or cleaning up the mess of a league in which we play.

In the long run, a fair league would mean that Celtic would win more often, which, usually, translates into more money (through qualification to Europe, and other such things). So, in the long run, Celtic would profit from taking up the causes that many of the supporters espouse (even, if, in the short term, this caused some loss).

Celtic could have insisted upon changes, but, if those changes weren’t forthcoming, what are the consequences…. quit? Not really an option. So, I get this is a complicated issue. And I understand that a company is not going to do business in public, and must, of necessity keep some information from the rank and file shareholders.

However, at the end of the day, I cant shake the feeling that Celtic is content to go along with the ‘old firm ‘ model as they see it as the most profitable. That, for me, is regrettable.

What I find troubling is the defeaning silence from Celtic on many of these issues, but PL is today talking about how the club is being used re: the living wage issue. Clearly, he doesn’t mind speaking his mind when it suits him. However, that begs the question of why the silence from Celtic on many of the other issues (e.g., kettling, was Celtic divulging information to the police about supporters, beyond that which is required by law?).

At the end of the day, the fans have always been a source of revenue. That has always been the case. And, in that respect, Celtic are no different than any other company (and most – but not all – football clubs.

The difference now is that today, due to internet, etc., fans are more informed and more engaged. Whereas before people only saw the Great and powerful Oz, recently, we are starting to realize that the Club isn’t this great and powerful entity, but is just a bunch of guys, behind the screen, pulling the levers.

While I think we have the right to know what is being done in our name, (and I am as gulity as anyone of overanalysing stuff) there is a part of me that longs for the simpler days when Celtic and Celtic Park were where you could go to dream and forget about taxes and that sort of stuff, even if only for a few hours each week.

How long does it take to send a letter, an e mail, then respond to it ?

Say the club have sent half a dozen, which I very much doubt, a couple at most imo, and the sfa have responded, say 6 months tops.

The will is not there to bring it to a conclusion, esp from the sfa, you have stated that the club are willing to go the whole mile, and I believe that you believe that.

    I just don’t buy it.

Had the club been hell bent on pushing this to it’s conclusion, they wouldn’t still be corresponding with the sfa.

They won’t go public, the sfa will stall and stall, the hun will be back in the top league, everything will be rosy in the garden again.

Time after, the sfa have been caught out cheating, breaking and bending their rules to suit, time after time the blogs have said they are done for, time after time feck all happens, they carry on as if nothing has happened.

So please forgive me for thinking this will be any different.

I have total admiration for those who brought Res 12 about as you know, it’s the others involved I have no faith in.

Uefa give not a toss for a tinpot nation like scotland, they will do what the sfa recommend the do, sfa.

Nobody wants to open the box, the fear from them is palpable, it won’t happen.

Too many in high places have too much to lose.

The same goes for the hun debacle, there will be a scapegoat or two, I wouldn’t be holding my breath on that tho, those and such as those will be protected to the hilt.
