Solid CL performers, realisation dawns at Ibrox

971

I remember some disparaging comment from sections of the Scottish sporting media regarding Mikael Lustig’s performances for Sweden at Euro 2012.  Mikael had only recently joined Celtic and was still finding his feet in Scotland.  In short, we didn’t have enough information to make an informed judgement before the Euros.  We do now.

His energy levels, speed, height, crossing and general levels of performance has been remarkably high and consistent.  Sweden handed him the job of subduing one of the world’s top three players at their recent World Cup qualifier in Portugal, Ronaldo was shackled, scoring only when he left Mikael’s area of the field.

There is a notion that this type of player, who can perform solidly at Champions League and international level, but who we can convince to renew his contract, is more important than the more stellar performers, who have an eye on the exit door.

Adam Matthews timely return from injury will compensate for Mikael’s absence as he recuperates post-op, but we’ve never looked as effective on the right since both of them were fully fit.

The reaction to yesterday’s AGM at Ibrox has been surprising, mostly as it surprised anyone.  The outcome has been a forgone conclusion for weeks (if not months), while the realisation of what the future is going to look like for Newco has finally dawned on a few.

A generation brought up to believe in sugar daddies will have to learn: expenditure must equal or be less than income over any given business cycle.

In this respect, I cannot figure why fans are so unhappy with the Newco board, whose central failing has been to spend far too much money on wages for a manager and players.  From what I hear, no one at the AGM demanded football budget is cut to an appropriate level.

As their new chairman said, costs will be cut; doing so is a financial imperative.  The current Rangers might play in the same colours as its liquidated predecessor, but things will never – eeeeeeeever – be the same again.

This afternoon is the final pre-Christmas posting time if you want your CQN Annual before the day:

    Re Pastor Jack Glass,

I went to see Billy Connolly at the Motherwell Civic a wheen of years back and ole’ Jack was outside demonstrating with his followers,..placards held aloft pronounced Billy to be the son of satan and the devil’s spawn etc,..(because of Connolly’s crucifixion routine.)

  3. Have seen a few off topic comments about Saatchi being a wife beater and this is reprehensible behaviour in my opinion.

Before anyone gets too carried away please remember that a great man , Madiba, who was buried last week was a self confessed wife beater as a young man. There is redemption for people who want to redeem.

I find it amusing how the CQN happyclappers dismiss as always being pish any player who leaves or wants to leave Celtic.Especially players who have been a great service to Celtic such as Samaras and Ledley.

wee jinky was quite correctly voted our greatest ever player but for me lubo was the most SKILLFUL player ever to grace the hoops….in my humble opinion of course.

No Mags, it’s not amusing; it’s actually pretty sad.

If Sammi leaves, especially if it’s true that he’s been insulted by being offered reduced terms to re-sign – he would certainly go with my very best wishes. I have grown to love the big man and he will, for me, always be very, very welcome at Celtic Park.

As for big Joe. A very decent player who has probably stayed the right time with us before moving on.

  8. I thought Viduka was a real talent. Sad how things worked out with him in the end.

I think the world of Sammi and Joe and wish them well in the future. They shouldn’t play again for us as their places in the team should be occupied by young players desperate to burst through and who very much need the experience.

And Maggie, say hello to Awe Naw for me:o)

I have met a lot of decent human beings from privileged backgrounds.

Similarly I have met some absolute cntus from under privileged backgrounds.

The opposite is true to both of the above statements, too.

Drug abuse and wife beating are not exclusive to or respecting of any social status.

People are people as Depeche Mode once sang.

  12. Re Sammi and Joe going. Or not

Must admit watching the two recent games v Hearts and Motherwell I wondered how he’d fit in. 12 goals in Europe and that double at the the Stinkhole on 2/1/11 assure him of a place in my affections and hopefully most Celtic supporters . Heart says keep him , head says he needs a new challenge.

Joe I think does fit in and I still think he’s our second best left back. I’d keep him but if he goes good luck to him.

  13. Have found the quotes from FF similar to be worrying and hilarious in equal measure. Half the time it reads like the Deep South in the 60s or Nuremberg Rally wannabees. Then it goes all Dad’s Army and Captain Manwairing.

To Celtic stuff. Lustig. Player of the season for me even if he doesn’t kick a ball again all season. Biggest signing priority for me from current squad.

Joe. Tidy. Sometimes missed when not playing. Sometimes missing a wee bit when he is playing.

Big Sammy. The enigma. A riddle, wrapped in a conundrum swathed in a Hoops top, as Churchill may have said have he been a CQNer (unlikely I’ll grant you!). Worth keeping? Worth breaking the bank for? Probably not. Deserving of a pay cut? Def not.

On holiday for a fortnight NOW. Aff for a bath cos I can. You should all be glad CQN skype doesn’t exist!!!!

Likewise. I don’t have any particular issue with people using drugs on a social basis regardless of their background.

I was just making the point that ‘Nigella using drugs’ has become the story when it’s neither a surprise nor the issue.

On the wife-beating point – Saatchi hasn’t shown any remorse for his actions. He came up with some convoluted excuse for grabbing her round the neck in public.

People like Saatchi are too arrogant to apologise. He would consider that to be beneath him and a weakness, no doubt.

  16. Masty, just seen your reply to me.

    Yes, I read that too.

But this is Sevconia, and these things are parroted, besides, I’ll go with Celtic’s best offer

If that makes me a happy clapper, so be it.
