Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

    The 5 year egg timer

    by sitonfence

In my previous post I highlighted the fact that Charles Green was overwhelmed by the hatred he experienced when attempting to launch his phoenix operation. One would naturally ask the question as to why the chairmen of the leading clubs were so opposed to the SFA/SPL attempted subversion of their own rules. Would it be fair to posit that they had engaged in an arms race with David Murray’s Rangers and that his £10 for every £5 spent was not subject to tax?

Mr Murray was reputed to have used a five minute ‘egg-timer’ at Rangers board meetings. If matters could not be resolved within this time frame he would move on to the next item on the agenda. Challenges to his authority, and in particular in regard to his tax avoidance strategies, have never been reported. As Hugh Adam stated, everyone knew he that was cheating but it did not benefit anyone to discuss it.

William Nimmo Smith made a decision that many found surprising. He chose to consider the Discounted Option Scheme (DOS) within the context of EBT. He should have been aware that DOS had been declared illegal by an Inner House ruling against Aberdeen Asset Management in 2010. However, when Harper Macleod approached Duff & Phelps for details on the DOS and the side letters, the administrators refused to comply. The Nimmo Smith commission had no legal standing. Therefore Harper Macleod made a request that did not have the weight of a court order. With no information on DOS being forthcoming, Mr Nimmo Smith assumed that EBT were legal, that there was no competitive advantage and that Sandy Bryson’s imperfect registrations held sway. This was the perfect result for Scottish football governance as unfair competitive advantage would have to be addressed and this would have led to scrutiny of the SFA chairman, Campbell Ogilvie, who attended the remuneration committee meetings when DOS were established. He also executed a number of share purchases apropos to the illegal DOS scheme.

In Mr Ogilvie’s defence I could posit that he was unaware that the scheme was illegal and that this had not been established until 2010. However there is a major flaw in this argument as HMRC were pursuing Rangers in 2005 in regard to DOS and when the raid on Rangers by the City of London Police in 2007 revealed the existence of side letters, when this had been denied by Rangers in 2005, it was fortunate that Mr Ogilvie had exited from Rangers with an EBT golden parachute.

SDM was in a difficult position as he he had been caught cheating and with the denial of the existence of side letters, he instructed his senior executives to liaise with Andrew Thornhill QC of Pump Court Tax Chambers for advice. His advice was to immediately address the £2.8m overdue payable.

SDM transferred this liability to Craig Whyte on 6th May 2011, however prior to Whyte’s acquisition an application was made to the SFA for consideration for participation in UEFA tournaments. This application did not arrive prior to the 31st March deadline. It arrived on 1st April. However at this point Rangers were aware of the £2.8m tax due on the DOS scheme, which had been declared illegal in 2010 and that was due as HMRC had the power to retrospectively assess Rangers as they had lied in 2005.

The fact that Campbell Ogivie was appointed as chairman of the SFA, one week prior to the 31st March deadline, could have led him to have had a closer look at an application where a member club had an unpaid social tax of £2.8m. He evidently had much more important things to attend to.

The application was further reviewed by the SFA in June. Rangers participated in the Champions League qualification games, despite the social tax being unpaid. This social tax led to bailiffs arriving at Ibrox in August, so the idea that the SFA could claim that it had not ‘crystallised’ in June is frankly preposterous. Final demands had been sent to Ibrox prior to the SFA approving Rangers’ UEFA licence.

Malaga Club de Futbol found themselves in a similar position to Rangers, but unlike the Rangers-facing SFA, their federation informed UEFA of their tax liability.A Uefa statement said: “Uefa’s club financial control body has taken its first decision due to the presence of significant overdue payables.Malaga is excluded from participating in the next Uefa club competition for which it would otherwise qualify for in the next four seasons.” Malaga CF were also fined £300,000 after a full audit by UEFA.

Rangers escaped this fate due to the collusion of the SFA. Stewart Regan was so concerned about that he wrote to Rangers and asked for their approval to issue a statement exonerating the SFA. Rangers instructed him to ‘shut up’ as he was digging a bigger hole for both parties.

So the matter was cleared with the napkins at a sumptuous dinner at Hotel Du Vin. In the ensuing white media noise on the 14th February 2012, the SFA had hoped their collusion with the Whyte regime would never see the light of day. Mr Regan and his corrupt cronies are hoping that the Fraudco trial collapses as Mr Whyte might reveal some inconvenient truths.

As we approach the five year anniversary of the SFA collusion I’m sure many would agree that the Mr Regan and Mr Whyte spent less than 5 minutes discussing the matter at dinner. There was no need for a five minute egg-timer. However what was discussed was almost certainly recorded by Mr Whyte using his specially equipped pen. Let’s hope Mr Regan spoke expansively and that Mr Whyte provided him with sufficient rope to hang himself.

  2. Ah Well, another day another poll another stat to contemplate.

Lucky Cody. On one breath you state that we are in a pub league. Next, you moan about anticipated attendances.

You have really answered your own question, however for clarity can you explain :- Why should supporters pay top dollar to watch what you percieve to be a pub league ?

Only one person caused the red….. CT with a bit of help from the offside being played on, DB won the ball we can’t deviate from that matter of fact…… Offside = free kick = no red

Ronny was still correct in his displeasure about Boyata giving CT the excuse

  4. Chris Sutton has won himself a nice little earner by leading off the Ronny is a Norwegian Diddy brigade, and he knows it. Cart blanche negativity in a tabloid and head honcho witch hunter on BT Sport, he even made it to BBC and football focus due to his sterling services to Scottish football.

Th problem for Chris if he hangs around long enough is in the future, when Celtic appoint a manager he rates and he’ll require to temper his act, he is being used by SMSM when they are done with him, he’ll be replaced just like the Celtic manager.

SMSM have never crusaded a Celtic boss and they are in full flow take the mickey from the Celtic support, whilst driving the anti Celtic syllabus, of divide, abuse and traduce Celtic at every, and any opportunity.

The mantra has never changed even though the Celtic manager does at frequent intervals.

You make some valid points on where we are financially, due to the obscene amounts of tv revenue paid down south.

We have a lot of good players playing either out of position or not to the standard they can.

    Why?

Another point, why do we speculate on mibees at our cost?

We need a proven backbone in our team for the youngsters to learn from, some old heads wouldn’t go amiss…. Maybe they cost too much? HH

I believe you are correct that the anti Celtic cheat Thomson was culpable.

Disagree that Delia was right to blame Boyata.

Was merely echoing what had been posted on here that Eriks pass was to blame.

My post was based on the frequency of poor passes by us and how often we create our own problems due to the fact we do not seem to have the ability or coaching to deal with such.

The static nature of our system leaves anything but a sideways or backwards pass a high risk.

  18. Bournesouprecipe,

The days of the media formulating the opinions of the broad Celtic support are gone. The media are even lifting content from Celtic websites. The Celtic Board no longer holds any sway as their behaviour in supporting the fans has been called out by a number of the Celtic sites and the Trust if I recall correctly.

The supports disenchantment is caused by the downsizing and the mediocre team. CL nights seem a million miles away and the belief of many that there is no ambition to reach that level. As the fans see every decent player hastily sold replaced by cheap projects it is only natural they become disillusioned. Also they know our Board did not even comment on the SFA/Sevco collusion and it took the Raith Rovers Chairman to step in. Of course our CEO cracked his Rory Bremner joke so at least nobody can say we did nothing.

Also the Lawwell/Deila alliance has not delivered either with 2 CL failures and a third guaranteed.

The football is absolutely dire and the fans don’t need the media to tell them. 20k at Celtic Park next week including a few thousand from Greenock is not an organised boycott by the Media. It is Celtic fans voting with their feet.

It would be good if we recognise the Celtic support as discerning , knowledgeable and able to make up its own mind rather than being spoon fed by the media. That description is more apt for the gullibles frequenting Ibrox.

  22. Can I ask five questions of those that believe Ronny is the Man to be our Manager!

Why do you believe he is the Man for the job?

How long will you give him to prove he is the Man for the job?

At what point would you consider it was time for him to go, if at all?

Who should decide when it is time to go and what should they take cognisance off when deciding?

In asking the above question I would stress I am not asking you do not stop supporting him and the Players when you go along to support them. I ask as I have my doubts and not convinced that he is the Man to manage us. I cannot argue that he has won two trophies but his style of play, his playing of Players out of position and his apparent reluctance to use different tactics when the occasion arises put big doubts in my mind.

You could argue that he should be allowed to continue as long as he continues to win trophies and once he fails he should go. If that is the case, you need to prepared for the new Manager to be given time to recruit Players and to mould them to play they way he wants them, it could take time or they could do a MON. I believe it is time to start preparing for the next managerial era.

My thoughts on why I believe we should be starting to think of moving on. I will continue to support Ronny and the Team when I am present at Matches and as I have never done and never will do, I will never boo them. I will never phone a phone-in and I will never write to the MSM airing my views on how disheartened I am with my Team, I will do that on Celtic minded Forums.

I also believe that we need to look at the strategic picture, from the Board to the scouting system but it is not going to happen unfortunately.

I will finish by saying this, I have lived and supported Celtic through us winning in nine-a-row, magic, too young to appreciate 67, three months short of my fifth birthday. I have lived through a Team doing nine-a-row, gutted. Doubly gutted when they did it by cheating. I have been there during the good and bad times, through the baron days and the trophy winning days and will continue to support Celtic no matter who is the Manager.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

How will you explain the increase in the support if things are as bad as you allude to?
