Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

  1. Wonder if this will be a not proven?

A Kilmarnock player has made a complaint to police about alleged abuse from the stands during a match against Hearts.

Josh Magennis is understood to have made an allegation following his side’s 1-0 defeat at Tynecastle on Saturday afternoon.

Police Scotland confirmed a report of alleged “racial abuse” was received. Magennis, 25, is in his second season with the Ayrshire club and the striker is also a Northern Ireland international.

Hearts said in a statement on Saturday evening: “The club can confirm that following this afternoon’s game, a complaint was made to Police Scotland by a Kilmarnock player.

“The Kilmarnock player alleges that an abusive comment was made relating to his nationality by an individual seated within the home end at Tynecastle.

“The alleged abusive remark related to the player being Irish. The player is from Northern Ireland. To clarify, this allegation does not involve the player’s

    colour, religion or sexuality.

“Senior figures from both clubs were present when the player made the complaint and discussed the matter fully thereafter.

“Heart of Midlothian FC has a number of players of different nationality playing in the current squad and is very proud of the international make-up of our team.

“We will fully support any police investigation into reports of abuse such as the one which has been reported today.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ”We can confirm we have received a report of racial abuse from today’s match at Tynecastle Stadium, Edinburgh.

    ”Inquiries are ongoing.”

  2. Parkheadcumsalford-Re the Tierney ‘tackle ‘,a more experienced player would have made sure it was a red card, which it warranted.

    Vale Bhoy,

Sound logic on the weak manager we have and our constant falling down in a one horse race.

    Kevjungle from early morning,

Again sound logic. Lawwell has cost us £60M of CL revenue with his running of the club. Where we are positioned today with a lame duck manager , a bloated squad with a footballing budget squandered on projects, panic buys, loans is not the base for CL qualification.

Ronny will be replaced by the summer latest ; he has failed as we regress in a 4 2 3 1 straightjacket with no plan B. He has been an absolute howler of an appointment as his legacy will be the short lived Ronny Roar.

Lawwell needs to go to as what respectable manager could work under our interfering CEO. Keane walked away because of Lawwell. Lawwell wants a puppet. Dermot has to sort this mess out as the decline and apathy is shocking.

Let’s see how many turn up for the Morton game. Less than 20k. Normally 3 of us would go and make a day off it. Not anymore why should we line the pockets of Lawwell as the club is run into the ground.

What is Celtics problem defending corners or Lawwell/Deila. Of course it’s defending corners because Lawwell/Deila are doing a grand job.

  4. T.D. 67.

I agree about the treatment of K.T. other teams are allowed to foul him with impunity. The bhoy has a heart of a lion, he looks them in the eye and picks himself up and gets on with it. Why do we allow this to happen, his teammates should be given the aggressors a hard time. Think back to the Martin O’Neill era, if one of them received a bad tackle, the rest were around the aggressor threatening retribution. Just now, as a team, we accept this we really need to man up and support each other. I would like any of the management team to show solidarity with K.T. also, they should be given the aggressors dogs abuse and in general kicking up a fuss. We seem to just accept it as a given. If it continues K.T. Will take a sore one.

  5. Vale Bhoy

    “hanging him out to dry”

Ronny was annoyed with Dedrecyk for going to ground, even though it wasn’t a red he put his team down to ten men……but hey ho, if Ronny came out and slaughtered Thimpson other faults would be found

  6. Lucky Cody

Will you and your two pals want to go to the final in May ?

No wonder you won’t go to the Morton game, 2 games in a weekend can be expensive especially after Dundee beat your mob on the Saturday

For the record what does “making a day of it” entail

Dogged 10am mass the day, off to 12pm then it’s a day watching the fitba on the box, Lennybhoy from earlier get yourself a couple of hundred yards west as St Agustines turn the heating on that St Mary’s mob are too tight fisted

  7. Gerryfaethebrig.

    I can’t agree with you.

Ronny may have been annoyed with D.B. for going to ground but you shouldn’t criticise your players in public, always defend in public criticise in the dressing room. Ronny was naive, he compounded his naivety by being wrong about the red card. He’s made himself look foolish and you can guarantee the players in the dressing room won’t be happy with him at how quick he was to criticise a team mate.

  8. Anyway, I’m away out to my favourite place.

Costa. Be as happy as you can be folks and have fun.

  9. So Aberdeen drop points yesterday, we maintain a six point difference and the backers of Ronny turn on his critics.

    My view is quite simple

RD is about 80% likely to win the league and has a reasonable chance in the cup.

For many that’s enough, particularly if you compare it to the barren years of the 90s.

    For me it’s not.

My most enjoyable times at CP are Euro games under the floodlights, and I want more of those, particularly in the CL,and even better if they are post Xmas.

Do I think we have 11 in our squad of players capable of getting us into CL group stages, ? YES

Do I think we have a manager with tactical nous of getting us there ? NO

So, for me, we get the league title and remove him from 1st eleven duties.

Incidentally, I saw a question raised over whether RD would / could be an assistant to an experienced manager.

Given that Ronny is clearly a bright and forward thinking individual, , I would consider him as a (Euro style) Director of Football, who sets out the vision for youth through senior player, advises / coordinates signing strategy , and interfaces with the board.

However, I wouldn’t let him run the first 11.

  10. GFTB,

If we make the final I will be there.

Anybody who doesn’t agree with your naive view of Celtic is a Hun. This slavish thinking guarantees only one thing at Celtic …decline.

Celtic is heading to close to a £50M turnover club with Lawwell taking 2% of revenue as compensation. I bet you the CEOs of every FTSE 100 wish they had that deal.

It’s amazing that the Celtic supported is littered with guys like you with blind devotion to failure. After 10am mass why don’t you go for a round of benediction if they still do that. Wake up and smell the coffee Lawwell is laughing all the way to the bank.

Oh and if we make it to the final I will enjoy the day…..win , lose or draw.

  11. Gerryfaethebrig

Thankfully Jimmynotpaul articulated the Boyata situation better than me.

He should never have come out with those comments after the game. He, albeit inadvertently, gave credence to that clown and arch hun craigan’s surreal ‘interpretation’ of the rules of football.

Why is everyone getting upset over bad tackles. When we get a health and safety officer it will all stop. In my expert opinion.

  13. Go tell the Spartim on

Bedwetters talk a lot about the myriad of RD’s faults, the latest is his naivety with the press, they don’t do irony.

If he starts blaming officials then he’ll be pilloried for subconsciously feeling the pressure, wtf can he do about in this cesspit of football association

They talk about replacing the manager due to his faults, and make no mistake he has them, maybe they should look at their contribution, you meet them at the game, agendas before the game starts, constant barracking of scapegoats, SMSM attitude regarding progress in Europe, he’s already given you Europe after Christmas, what do you hear, “but this, but that” they’ve always got a reason to lambast, but dismiss the reality.

Being a club inclusive to all, unfortunately that means more than our fair share of nuggets

  14. LCB

If we make the final am sure we wilł all make a day of it, no mention of the H word in my post, as for my naive view….. nothing will change there but each to their own

    LP

You like the H&S stuff, I know tongue is firmly placed in cheek, as for Boyata he should know Celtic defenders should not make last ditch legitimate tackles

LP who is in this clique can I join ?

  15. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I am confused ( not an unusual situation ) Ronny could very well win four trophies in two seasons which is pretty good going by any standard and yet he is losing the Celtic support. You can actually see the support melting away with the large number of empty seats at our home games and they are growing in number game by game. I now have the strange feeling that nothing he does will get them onside he has for what ever reason in my opinion gone past the point of no return. I think it is a pity as I feel he will become a top manager as if as many are saying he has not got the skills required to manage a big club like Celtic he is doing pretty well while learning the job we all get frustrated with any manager after a while but sacking the manager is very rarely the answer. H.H.

  16. Posted in the Scotsman this morning, my post was refused……we will not post your comment until you remove the word Sevco…….I reposted, stick your paper up yer arse,…… I’m waiting on a reply?

  17. The only reason RD gets it in the neck is because PL hired him, RD is the stick splinter groups use to beat up PL, it’s all childish games just to get a fan on the board, bottom line is these eejits will never be happy until that day happens, and that’s not going to happen in the near future (thank the Lord) so the continuation of moaning and causing divide will continue for a long time, the thing that these splinter groups, Huns, and the SMSM is, none of them like PL, all three are dragging my club down, Celtic supporters?

Changed my name due to the bhoys on the supporters bus telling me how much I’m hated on here. Clique is just CQN terminology.

Health and safety is brilliant can’t believe that was getting spoke about.

Junior out LMS yesterday, just Mrs LP left. Maybe buy back in.

  19. JNP

Enjoy your day at Costas, not looking for agreement but some would find fault in whatever Ronny does or doesn’t

We all have an opinion some thinks theirs is better than others, me ? I don’t really care, nothing will change my opinion

No hatred in this household, get yourself bought back in….in fact get the wee man bought back in he last longer than me or you

  21. Go Tell The Spartim,

What he could have done without mentioning Thompshun was draw attention to the inconsistency in the red card for Boyata’s side on tackle and the yellow card given to McKinnon for his straight leg, studs-up leg breaker on Tierney, the muppets would have been squirming with that one. Regardless, you don’t bag your own to these jokers.

  22. Shocking tony,

    Though not surprising.

Need to thump sevco on the park enough times to make them realize “awe right its not the same club, This one is pants” ;)

  23. Bada Bing,

Oyster Card is the best way to go. On the red eye at 6.50am tomorrow to London City and oyster takes you on DLR into central London.

Being back in Glasgow for the weekend the general consensus at dinner last night was that Lawwell made a serious mistake by not sacking Deila after EL shambles. A new manager would have had the January transfer window to bring in one or two of his own. We have lost 6 months now whilst we wait the summer change before the CL qualifiers which is a £30M Everest now.

Deila was a bad appointment , continuous support of someone out of their depth only compounds the original mistake. Sutton is 100% correct that Deila has been extremely naive. Sutton is reflecting partly what the dressing room will be thinking. In addition to that the dressing room will be asking ….how can we play for a guy who does not support us ?

It makes the decision not to replace him after the EL shambles an even bigger mistake now.

  24. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

If Ronny Deila`s record at Celtic is good, then those who decry him are wrong.

If Ronny Deila`s record at Celtic is bad, then those who praise him are wrong.

    Discuss.

  25. Sorry Tony, Only reason RD gets heat is because he is inept at his job. Peter’s cheap option never worked out and I feel for RD, Should never have been at Celtic. If PL did believe in RD he would have let him bring over his own backroom but he wasn’t allowed to and got JC and JK as assistant both men having never achieved anything as coaches. SO from day dot RD has been up against it. He doesn’t know either man But they were forced on him and he has to work with them and RD knew from day 1 that PL had no faith in him or why push the assistants on him. Peter at blame here not RD or JK or JC but all men are symptoms of the club being ran on the cheap by a man who has no idea about football.

Not being a hun either for swiping the board and management just pointing out the facts as i see them.

    Just my thoughts on it.

  26. KLV

Exactly….. If anybody thinks the old/new ragers have got away with it, trust me they haven’t, people who followed that old/new mob don’t even engage with me about football whereas in the 90s their supremacist attitude was flowing…… They are a permanent embarrassment and I love it

    JJ

If Ronny keeps achieving silverware that’s good enough for this ostrich

    Must dash

Have a good day fellow Celtuc fans and I hope Liverpool win the cup for no reason other than I dislike Man City more than them

  27. !! Bada Bing !!.

For what it’s worth ——- I always get an Oyster Card ———- saves money / saves time / saves hassle ..

    Enjoy !

  28. Bada Bing.

I was down in Uxbridge a few months ago, Oyster card definitely the way to go.

Depending on when you are going, you can have the card sent to your home address, just order it on line.

Go Spartam. How disappointing that you cannot engage with fellow supporters without calling them names. In my opinion, makes your post read very juvenile.

Gerryfaethebrig. Thanks, as ever, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Enjoy your day and as your correctly say, we are all entitled to our opinion.

  29. When did goal keepers start wearing gloves?

A mate was watching old footage of Ronnie Simpson, John Fallon even through to Peter Latchford they didn’t wear gloves and played bare knuckled in every game.

Can’t remember when the trend started with specialised keeper gloves, and pretty sure all keepers wear them now.
