Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

In my view churn is the major factor causing current disatisfaction.

Allowing for the fact that if a player wants to leave no club can keep them, it has not helped that our most successful transactions, bar Forster whom I think gave us a fair innings, have only stayed 2 years or less in case of a successful loan.

Again having got our fingers burned on bad signings (and who really thought some of those guys had something to offer us?), we instead go for loans which causes more churn.

So it appears we have decided to use the domestic market instead where if a player makes the grade with us he is more likely to stay longer.

Churn churn churn. You cannot get consistent performances if the churn rate is high.

We started with same line up 2 games in a row for first time v ICT. We scored 5 lost 0 over both games even with a crap first half in both.

Folk say they see no progress under RD. By what measure? We were 2 sending offs from trebles. We top the league and RD is heading for a second title and maybe cup.

But that measure does not satisfy the support so what will?

I’d like to see a settled side each week with no or max of one change unless of injuries. Then I can measure RD’s performance better but for me the idea that churning manager is the answer to our problems is like throwing petrol on a fire and wondering why it’s not gone out.

What I would like to see is RD’S first choice team as he sees it and declares it being given a run with post match reasons for changes if made.

That and players making less costly errors especially when on top.

There was a day when an away draw on a tricky surface with 10 men against physical opponents with licence to hammer would have been seen as a result.

So what’s changed? Had Sviachenko not played a less risky pass to release Hamilton, had Boyota stayed on his feet, had Griffiths not missed a penalty or a one on one as did GMS and we actually won with 10 men would the RD bandwagon got back into gear?

RD did not feature in any of the foregoing but he gets pelters for a draw and then speaking his mind. (In real time it looked a foul as it did in video until freeze framed) That’s what I just don’t get.

I just don’t get the focus on his negatives and dismissing the positives to make a case against him.

Somethings not right and that bothers me as much as RD’s ability.

  10. I’d like to say to all our Celtic friends on here – remember where we ply our trade – we get no big TV handouts – we have to work hard for every penny.

That we still aspire to mixing it with the big boys of European football says much for our love and expectation of our club.

Every year we are in our current position, our £/€ will buy us less, as players, agents and clubs are now demanding crazy salaries and fees.

Our current model of rearing our own, buying young and hungry and securing good quality loans, is the ONLY game in town for us – yes we can dream and moan – but only realism will keep our club alive in the big and getting bigger football world.

Neil Lennons 6-1 defeat at Camp Nou was by no means a disgrace when you consider the heavy defeats that Barca have inflicted on other teams. Neil also played more open in that game, much more than in the famous victory at Celtic park.

The cup defeats did mount up. Neil seemed unable to get them up for some one off cup games.

However, this analysis is in stark contrast to the coach now who cannot pick a team or tactics to qualify to compete against Barca, loses cup games in the same manner and has failed to make any improvement.

If it is a media campaign to get rid of the manager to help Rangers then they too are deluded that Deila may , through some miracle , become a guru manager that will sort all of these problems.

The Deila v Lennon issue is a bit like any comparison between some recent former player and a new one. The previous one was better but had some failings that shouldn’t be accepted by Celtic but why accept someone who is just not fit for purpose.

Those still in favour of Deila clearly are parochial and have no ambition for Celtic to remain at a level befitting of our club.

  13. HEBCELT,

He advised you can only vote once so it’s fair enough. I am surprised only 70% want Ronny out as every Celtic fan I have spoken to in Lindon or here wants him out.

The most telling element for me is that a hardcore Celtic website even running such a poll indicates the depth of feeling against Ronny esp after the Boyata debacle.

I probably need to expand my network to include some board sycophants that are pro Ronny…….as I would really like to understand what encourages people to support failure

You are right, Sviachenko was the one who messed up but everyone else is being blamed for the Bhoyata red card.

  15. Auldheid

What about the shape of the team when an intercepted pass leaves us with two fullbacks up the pitch and if we are lucky two players goal side, this has been since Ronnie arrived and dead easy to counter against, where is he learning?

  16. Neganon2

How far back do you want to go to compare Molde and Malmo appearances in the CL v Celtics? I think you will find we have a better record under PL than they but I’ll dig out the figures.

Like a broken clock you can be right twice a day but useless the rest.

You ignore the economics of football because it does not suit your argument that looks like a personal vendetta.

The economics dictate club policy, we might work better within that policy and mistakes get made, but we have been climbing up a down escalator for years and it’s a wonder we are still recognised as a top club.

You give credit for nothing and I’m back to scrolling by you. One of the ups of victory is your absence.

Surely the players have to take some of that blame, what is Brown (and whoever is playing in his place) should be covering for full backs (who’s job is to get forward).

Brown very rarely makes it to the oppositions box so should easily be able to cover any runners with our 2 central defenders.

  19. Lucky Cody, it was never a one horse race, only the media would have you believe that one. A big budget doesn’t gurantee success, look at Chelsea or Sevco last season. The sheep only need to be better than the rest to make the league competitive, and to an extent they have. Europe is a bonus for us, not a staple.

  20. mullet and co 2 on

    Auldheid,

European football is absolutely an achievable target.

I think the churn has had a factor in losing those two semi finals. In the past we would have had the players to cope in such adversity.

The mistake by Ambrose in the most recent semi was a result of our playing style and a lack of planning to replace two centre backs we knew would leave as far back as summer 2014.

The recruitment is managed on the basis of risk. If we don’t sign player A we can always play Efe. Oh look I can get Boyata for X less per week than your other target Ronny. The fact that Lawells son is pushing these targets our way makes it more frustrating. I am sure that Ronny wants a settled side with no churn. My sympathies lie with him in that respect but not in choosing to play a calamitous kamikaze style with no prospect of success.

  21. Dessyboy

Now you are talking. That is what needs addressing. It’s a question I’d like to get an answer to.

TBB has covered it as well. I think cutting out that sort of stuff which totally undoes otherwise good consistence possession would go a long way to satisfying us.

I think we miss the NL philosophy of a tight midfield given NL was a master player in that respect.

Correct, mate. For that reason I’ve avoided being overly-critical of RD. He is hamstrung by events out with his control, and above his pay-grade.

But even those events he CAN control,he has me scratching my head sometimes.

No-one can win every game, that’s a given, but as a coach he should be improving players individually and the team as a whole.

It doesn’t seem to be happening, unfortunately. I won’t hazard a guess as I’m not privy to the dressing-room,but I honestly see a fella who no longer knows how to get his ideas across. Or how to get players to listen and learn.

I would accept that this is a breakdown in communication or game awareness between coach and players if it happens rarely, it seems to me we go gung ho with the ball and every manager knows it.

I agree it happens to often, that’s why even if Ronny is saying nowt to the midfield surely Brown (the highest paid person at the club, I know just throwing that in their as wages is the topic of the day) can’t identify that by himself then he deserves criticism.

    Stairheedrammy,

Before long you will be telling us that the mere wearing of the green is a privelege and we should be thankful for the alms Celtic bestows on the poor.

European football is a must, an essential especially when the game is skewed in our favour. Chelsea failed this season because the players turned on their manager. Man City fail because it’s a soulless club that has lost its identity. Celtic are quickly losing identity because the club and supporters like you forget it’s a results business not a charade of colour and ceremony. If you want to be a winner then make sure you win something.

  29. Mullet and co, can you please explain how European football is skewed in our favour. We do what we need to domestically and then we play higher level teams from around Europe.

St Pauli getting pummeled by a second division team and scoring on the break, guess what, their fans stuck by them and they came good. We could learn from that.

  31. So a Sviachenko pass caused the red?

No team has a 100% pass completion record.

Good teams are coached to alter shape based on wether they have possession or not.

We do not seem capable of altering shape to game situations.

We are a reactionary team only and often our reaction is late.

Witness how often our passes go wrong side or beyond team mates.

This is a symptom of a poorly implemented and static playing system.

Our coaches say all the right things but seem to lack the ability to implement any cohesive system.

It may be down to inexperience but they have had 18 months with no discernible improvement so more likely they are just not up to the task.

Football punditry is full of guys who can sum up a game excellently but were failures at coaches.
