Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

  1. Owen…..

That God guy is ok turning water into wine, not sure if he has got the handle on the beer thing (yet)

  2. We can debate the merits of the sending off all evening but there was a depressing inevitability as soon as it happened.

We still persist with wingers who seldom actually take a man on. Once last night GMS was running direct at a huge centre half and I thought “he’s got him on toast” only for our winger to weave inside into where three players were waiting. This unfortunately sums up another problem; decision making in the final third is shocking. I’ve actually seen us being four on two at a game at Celtic Park this year and we never even got a shot at goal.

The last time we played Hamilton at home players set down makers early doors by running at, and taking on, their opposite number. This set the tone for the whole game. Most of the time however we pass the ball back and forth across the park then play the ball into a packed defence where it breaks down or is hoofed up the park.

We are too slow in our build up and unfortunately very predictable. Our central defenders are left completely exposed and due to injuries and sending offs we are unable to build any coherent partnership in these positions.

I have watched all season with a growing alarm at our defending, movement, positional sense, and passing. With every defeat we are told that the management team know what is wrong and will fix it. It isn’t being fixed and it appears beyond the skill set of the management team to do so. I no longer have faith in their collective ability to explain tactics to their players, deploy them in those positions, or more importantly alter tactics during a match.

I wanted a challenge to us domestically but I envisaged teams having to raise their standards to match us and while Aberdeen have raised theirs I never envisaged our standards dropping quite so far so fast. These wounds are self-inflicted with over emphasis on so many midfielders it is no longer funny and this is before we even speak about guys out on loan.

Despite all of this we did miss two one on ones and another penalty, although how the defender did not receive a second yellow, is beyond me. This is almost like the standard booking for a Celtic player for over celebrating when we score. Every time a Celtic player gives away a penalty he is either booked or sent off yet players against us never are. Last night Dougie Imrie was given a final warning. He then gave away a penalty and a few minutes after that committed another bad challenge. I don’t know if he was eventually booked. Meanwhile the lunge at Tierney was frankly shocking.

The level of consistency in our refereeing community is deplorable and this is before we even get to the actual standard. Referee’s constantly hold up play giving out final warnings only to give the same final warning to the same player five minutes later. When they do book a player they take an absolute age to do so as if they are five year old writing in crayon.

To standstill in football is to go backwards.

To actually go backwards is criminal.
