St Pauli 1-0 Celtic

1482

By Alex Gordon.

A DREADFUL penalty-kick miss by Bahrudin Atajic condemned Ronny Deila to his first defeat as Celtic manager.

The Bosnian striker had the ideal opportunity to level the scores four minutes from time after substitute Paul McMullan had been downed in the box.

Unfortunately, Atajic blazed his spot-kick over the bar into the Hamburg crowd much to the annoyance of the new Hoops gaffer.

It was a largely experimental Celtic line-up with Deila taking no risks ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Legia Warsaw in the Polish capital.

Alas, appalling defending by Filip Twardzik gifted the Germans the winning goal before the interval.

The left-back made a mess of trying to control a long and hopeful punt into the Celtic penalty box. The ball broke clear and was immediately presented to Christopher Nothe who could hardly believe his good fortune.

Nothe struck his effort first time from eight yards and Craig Gordon had no chance as the low drive zipped past his right hand in the 39th minute.

Twardzik toiled in the opening 45 minutes and was also booked in the 33rd minute after a lunging tackle after once again giving the ball away with a slack pass.

Celtic started at whirlwind pace and had three excellent opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes.

Atajic fizzed in a low shot from just outside the box, but keeper Philipp Tschauner got down swiftly to hold the ball at his right hand post.

Five minutes later, Tony Watt, looking lively on the left wing, tried his luck from a tight angle.

His shot totally bamboozled Tschauner, but carried over the crossbar and out to safety.

Amido Balde should have got the game’s opening goal in the 10th minute when he was through on goal after some neat play outside the box.

However, the Portuguese Under-21 international lacked composure at the vital moment and allowed the keeper to block his hurried parting shot.

Gordon, making his second appearance for the Hoops, showed he was still rusty after being out for over two years with a slack goal-kick to Nir Biton.

The Israeli midfielder, captain for the day, was taken unawares and St Pauli broke forward, but made a mess of the opportunity.

Stuart Findlay, partnering Eoghan O’Connell in the middle of the inexperienced back four, was also sloppy with some wayward passes, but the Hoops escaped punishment.

The game was billed as a friendly – and the clubs have an affiliation – but the home players weren’t slow to put in some punishing challenges.

Skipper Soren Gonther was yellow-carded for a rugby tackle on McGeouch that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Celtic’s current home at Murrayfield.

Liam Henderson tried to set up Balde with a neat chip into the danger zone, but the ball carried over the giant frontman’s head.

It looked like being a stalemate at the interval until Twardzik’s lapse in concentration and control allowed St Pauli to snatch the lead.

Deila put on Lukasz Zaluska for Gordon at half-time and replaced the ineffective Balde with Paul McMullan.

Henderson brought the St Pauli keeper into action with a long-range free-kick in the 65th minute. The idea was good, but, unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite match the ambition.

Zaluska produced one memorable moment when he pushed a raging effort from Sebastian Mhyre over the crossbar 10 minutes from time.

Then came Atajic’s dreadful spot-kick blunder which was followed in the last minute by an effort from Watt which swept just wide of the target.

As an exercise, it was worthwhile and the Celtic youngsters will expect to do better when presented with the opportunity to impress the new manager.

CELTIC: Gordon (sub: Zaluska 46); Herron, Findlay, O’Connell, Twardzik; Biton, Henderson, McGeouch; Atajic, Balde (sub: McMullan 46) and Watt.

Henning Berg making noises we’re the better team in our upcoming clash with Legia Warsaw. Thinks he’s Alex Ferguson, but hopefully we will be better. I’m always optimistic against any team and there are very few bad teams at this stage, I think we should have enough to get through this leg. Roll on Wednesday.

    Good Morning.

    Not lazy journalism.

That is a phrase that I hope all CQN’ers are familiar with.

It is a phrase that came about simply because when dealing with sport in Scotland we were regularly fed a diet of inaccurate, manufactured, spoon fed and to be frank manipulated copy which suited the agendas of others rather than just gave you the facts — the real facts.

    Journalism has many faces.

It can be simply factual reporting, deliberately opinion forming or it can be campaigning journalism, designed to bring about change.

I have no wish to go into the ins and outs, the rights and wrongs, of the situation in Gaza as there have been plenty of exchanges on the situation on which either inform the reader or simply turn them off and away from the whole subject.

However, please watch this video from John Snow of Channel 4 News.

Listen to the tone of the man’s voice, what he has to say to you and to me, the statistics he refers to and the consequences of those statistics in a war zone.

The video does not seek to lay blame, or go into the political dogma of one side or another, but it does pose a question for you and for me.

The very best journalism is designed to make you think, possibly remember, and maybe act when you see something that has to change — needs to change.

This is as good an example of proper campaigning journalism as I have seen in a long time.

I don’t think we should be concerned so much about a few misguided views trying to justify what is happening in Gaza – although they should be challenged. Tricoloured Ribbon at 1.38. The sticky buns’ website comments about Paul George’s injury by pointing the finger elsewhere, are one of the reasons for my loathing of them.

I was at that game where that big swine McVie literally ended Brian’s Celtic career. From what I have read Jock Stein was in tears after the game as he thought Brian had the potential to be better than Kenny Dalglish.

One good memory of that game is Danny scored. Talking of Danny, does anyone have an update on how his recovery from a heart attack is going?

He may now be out of a job as Ronny wants to bring in his old first team coach.

GG, it’s good that Football is on the up in the States. I have watched some of the games on BT/ESPN, and the standard is improving. The ultra style fans appear to be accepted as opposed to club’s and the polis attitude to them here. They can add to the enjoyment of games although some fans don’t like them.

  21. Ellboy - I am Neil Lennon, YNWA. on

There has been some poisonous comments made on this blog that in the main have go unanswered!

    – We have extremist Muslims murdering moderates in Iraq

    – We have extremist Muslims murdering Christians in Sudan

    – Again in Sudan we recently see a lady give birth in chains and sentenced to death for supposedly denouncing her Muslim Faith to become a Christian.

    – We have extremist Muslims kidnapping children and murdering non believers in Nigeria

    – We have extreme Muslims murdering innocent Muslims in Syria

    – We have extreme Muslims ruling over the people of Gaza and calling for the total destruction of a people.

    – We have extreme Muslims in Iran, Yemen, Pakistan and countless other countries plotting attacks around the world.

The list could go on and on and on!

What’s the common denominator here? Yes you’ve guessed it ‘it’s the Jews, they’re the new Nazi’s’ you know!

To the people who’s have spouted such nonsense! Do me a fucking favour, away and have a series word with yourselves, open your eyes and see what’s going on around the world. Radical Islam (not Islam) is to blame for most of the worlds problems and without confronting this poison head on you’re allowing it to grow and become ever more dangerous. In fact in many cases it’s already here masquerading as moderate Islam on our TV screens and within our societies.

What will it take for people to wake up and stop looking for economical or oppressive reasons as excuses. Perhaps more honour killings, machete wielding maniacs or beheadings within ‘oppressive’ Britain will open your eyes. The simple truth is. Radical Islam with a capital ‘R’ does not tolerate anything other than Radical Islam and non believers are to be eradicated. Anyone and there are many who continue to make excuses by blaming others and placating this evil is as dangerous as the ideology itself.

When will people finally wake up to the truth?

Oh yes silly me ‘it’s all the genocidal Israeli’s and the despicable Jews’ fault!

The fact is Israel has this poisonous ideology in droves on their doorstep and are duty bound to protect their citizens from this extremism. Evil that openly calls for the total destruction of a country and it’s peoples, yet some on here prefer to accuse Israel of ‘Genocide’. This kind of comment is repugnant, disturbing and extremely inflammatory. Why Paul 67 allows such idiotic comment on his blog is beyond me. If Israel wanted the total destruction of the Palestinian people as Hamas does of the Jewish state, then it would be gone in a blink of an eye. No, the people of Gaza and the general Palestinian population are not, have never been and never will be Israel’s targets.

To equate Israel to the Nazis is seriously anti-Semitic and disgusting to read from anyone, never mind my fellow celtic supporters. There is no other way to describe it but open anti semitism and it should not be tolerated on this forum or anywhere for that matter. Though the fact that it is, is deeply concerning, however more worrying is the lack of numbers confronting such opinion head on.

Anti semitism is growing once again and it must be exposed, it’s extremely dangerous as history has proven.

‘The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing’

Folk closing their eyes to clear anti semitism and not just on this blog should simply not be an option!
