St Pauli 1-0 Celtic

1482

By Alex Gordon.

A DREADFUL penalty-kick miss by Bahrudin Atajic condemned Ronny Deila to his first defeat as Celtic manager.

The Bosnian striker had the ideal opportunity to level the scores four minutes from time after substitute Paul McMullan had been downed in the box.

Unfortunately, Atajic blazed his spot-kick over the bar into the Hamburg crowd much to the annoyance of the new Hoops gaffer.

It was a largely experimental Celtic line-up with Deila taking no risks ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Legia Warsaw in the Polish capital.

Alas, appalling defending by Filip Twardzik gifted the Germans the winning goal before the interval.

The left-back made a mess of trying to control a long and hopeful punt into the Celtic penalty box. The ball broke clear and was immediately presented to Christopher Nothe who could hardly believe his good fortune.

Nothe struck his effort first time from eight yards and Craig Gordon had no chance as the low drive zipped past his right hand in the 39th minute.

Twardzik toiled in the opening 45 minutes and was also booked in the 33rd minute after a lunging tackle after once again giving the ball away with a slack pass.

Celtic started at whirlwind pace and had three excellent opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes.

Atajic fizzed in a low shot from just outside the box, but keeper Philipp Tschauner got down swiftly to hold the ball at his right hand post.

Five minutes later, Tony Watt, looking lively on the left wing, tried his luck from a tight angle.

His shot totally bamboozled Tschauner, but carried over the crossbar and out to safety.

Amido Balde should have got the game’s opening goal in the 10th minute when he was through on goal after some neat play outside the box.

However, the Portuguese Under-21 international lacked composure at the vital moment and allowed the keeper to block his hurried parting shot.

Gordon, making his second appearance for the Hoops, showed he was still rusty after being out for over two years with a slack goal-kick to Nir Biton.

The Israeli midfielder, captain for the day, was taken unawares and St Pauli broke forward, but made a mess of the opportunity.

Stuart Findlay, partnering Eoghan O’Connell in the middle of the inexperienced back four, was also sloppy with some wayward passes, but the Hoops escaped punishment.

The game was billed as a friendly – and the clubs have an affiliation – but the home players weren’t slow to put in some punishing challenges.

Skipper Soren Gonther was yellow-carded for a rugby tackle on McGeouch that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Celtic’s current home at Murrayfield.

Liam Henderson tried to set up Balde with a neat chip into the danger zone, but the ball carried over the giant frontman’s head.

It looked like being a stalemate at the interval until Twardzik’s lapse in concentration and control allowed St Pauli to snatch the lead.

Deila put on Lukasz Zaluska for Gordon at half-time and replaced the ineffective Balde with Paul McMullan.

Henderson brought the St Pauli keeper into action with a long-range free-kick in the 65th minute. The idea was good, but, unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite match the ambition.

Zaluska produced one memorable moment when he pushed a raging effort from Sebastian Mhyre over the crossbar 10 minutes from time.

Then came Atajic’s dreadful spot-kick blunder which was followed in the last minute by an effort from Watt which swept just wide of the target.

As an exercise, it was worthwhile and the Celtic youngsters will expect to do better when presented with the opportunity to impress the new manager.

CELTIC: Gordon (sub: Zaluska 46); Herron, Findlay, O’Connell, Twardzik; Biton, Henderson, McGeouch; Atajic, Balde (sub: McMullan 46) and Watt.

Chavez I don’t believe in an eye for an eye, it leaves both sides blind. what is needed is a rational fair and lasting consensus to be reached by the people of both sides, this will not happen without outside intervention and mediation. Recent history shows that the only thing that makes Israel change course is when their armed forces have to fight adults, rather than children. They took a hammering from Hezbollah in Lebanon and all of a sudden their people turned against the war. If they negotiated in good faith to create a just two state solution then I’d be happy. They never are though, and the US and UK are still covering diplomatically for them, so the options are limited.

How do you equate a cri de couer aimed at stopping wholesale slaughter of innocent civilians with bloodthirsty Marxists?

  8. Watching the BBC news last night I listened as their foreign correspondent report that Israel government had said that Hamas had broke the ceasefire 4 hours before the 10pm end to ceasfire. A ceasefire originally set for 6pm but given an extension by the Israeli regime, of 4 hours, only 30 minutes prior to the reported rockets being fired.

With all the media and foreign correspondents in the region I find it strange that none had footage or witness evidence of the said break in ceasfire and that Israel did not provide evidence of the attacks.

In the same report it was mentioned that 3 tunnels had been found by Israel reportedly dug by Hamas into Israeli territory. Again I waited to see the evidence of these tunnels as reported. And again nothing.

Without evidence I view the reporting from the BBC as partial towards the Israeli govt. providing a footing for the regimes propaganda as they continue to commit the very worst of war crimes against children and innocent victims of the land stealing atrocity.

I have no quip with the Jewish religion as I have no quip with any other religion in the world. The Israeli regime is an international criminal organisation ignoring hundreds if not thousands of UN resolutions over the years.

I am not a Hamas supporter and understand that they are equal in their guilt for their actions. But when your people have spent years being trod on, incarcerated behind 40 foot walls, unable to travel freely in their own lands, have their homes destroyed and their land stolen from under them as year on year your enclave is reduced more and more then to an extent I understand why their has been an increase in extreme reaction from the Palastine side.

Four Green Fields comes to mind.

    My sons have sons.

Their will be no end to this conflict while Israel drives a people from their lands. It’s as simple as that! And the more Israel reacts the way it does the more and more extremists will be created.

As for ISIS. America and CIA backed since 2009. Who is orchestrating this conflict in the Middle East?

I hear what you’re saying, mate. In the meantime the best option for a withdrawal seems to be a bloody nose for the IDF. The ceasefire calls are laughable – stop firing for a week but let Israel stay in Gaza to destroy Hamas infrastructure. Like they’ll accept that. That was the US’ contribution btw. The siege of Gaza has to end and they have to get Israel back to its 1967 borders….but nobody is forcing them to do that, so they’ll carry on stealing Palestinian land and murdering their people.

  13. The one thing that Israel has never tried is Peace. To treat the Palestinians with respect, give them a viable independent Country and let them alone to develop & prosper. I know its a very far fetched scenario but why don’t they give Peace a chance.

It couldn’t be all about money could it. It couldn’t be that in a state of permanent war the money from the worldwide Jewish Community keeps pouring in plus the aid from the U.S.

Not alone are these war mongers just slaughtering innocent Palestinian women and children, they are destabilising the entire region and are fanning the flames that has led to the equally repugnant rise in Fundamentalist Islamic regimes such as ISIS.

The entire region is now becoming a very volatile dangerous place unless the crazies are brought to heel, the entire planet will suffer.

Ethnic cleansing is defined as the mass expulsion or killing of one ethic group in an area by another.

My “understanding” of the situation as advanced by the deputy speaker of the knesset.

Ultimatum – One warning from the Prime Minister of Israel to the enemy population, in which he announces that Israel is about to attack military targets in their area and urges those who are not involved and do not wish to be harmed to leave immediately. Sinai is not far from Gaza and they can leave. This will be the limit of Israel’s humanitarian efforts. Hamas may unconditionally surrender and prevent the attack.

Attack – Attack the entire ‘target bank’ throughout Gaza with the IDF’s maximum force (and not a tiny fraction of it) with all the conventional means at its disposal. All the military and infrastructural targets will be attacked with no consideration for ‘human shields’ or ‘environmental damage’. It is enough that we are hitting exact targets and that we gave them advance warning.

Siege – Parallel to the above, a total siege on Gaza. Nothing will enter the area. Israel, however, will allow exit from Gaza. (Civilians may go to Sinai, fighters may surrender to IDF forces).

Defense – Any place from which Israel or Israel’s forces were attacked will be immediately attacked with full force and no consideration for ‘human shields’ or ‘environmental damage’.

Conquer – After the IDF completes the “softening” of the targets with its fire-power, the IDF will conquer the entire Gaza, using all the means necessary to minimize any harm to our soldiers, with no other considerations.

Elimination- The GSS and IDF will thoroughly eliminate all armed enemies from Gaza. The enemy population that is innocent of wrong-doing and separated itself from the armed terrorists will be treated in accordance with international law and will be allowed to leave. Israel will generously aid those who wish to leave.

Sovereignty – Gaza is part of our Land and we will remain there forever. Liberation of parts of our land forever is the only thing that justifies endangering our soldiers in battle to capture land. Subsequent to the elimination of terror from Gaza, it will become part of sovereign Israel and will be populated by Jews. This will also serve to ease the housing crisis in Israel. The coastal train line will be extended, as soon as possible, to reach the entire length of Gaza.

According to polls, most of the Arabs in Gaza wish to leave. Those who were not involved in anti-Israel activity will be offered a generous international emigration package. Those who choose to remain will receive permanent resident status. After a number of years of living in Israel and becoming accustomed to it, contingent on appropriate legislation in the Knesset and the authorization of the Minister of Interior, those who personally accept upon themselves Israel’s rule, substance and way of life of the Jewish State in its Land, will be offered Israeli citizenship.

I think I was quite clear earlier – I’d much rather Israel buggered off back to within their own borders and let the Palestinian people live in peace. Israel is the occupier. In international law the Palestinians are entitled to defend themselves. With nothing concrete being done to get Israel to back off the most likely way the conflict will end will be losses on the Israeli side. I want a just peace over there, not a throttling of the Palestinian people.
