Stand up for the Champions

I know when you begin to dominate a championship that when another team eventually lift the trophy it can seem like an intolerable failure; compare our distress in 2009 to our resolve to do better after the final home game in 1996.  Time adds perspective to our triumphs.  As does not being there and seeing photos of the presentation hours after the event.

These are special times, enjoy them.

Many thanks to the Columba Club in Blantyre for Friday night’s Question and Answer event, and to the irrepressible Phil Agnew, who organised the event.  I was delighted to share a stage with Paul McConville and Phil Mac Giolla Bhain.  Great to see so many CQN’ers there too, my only regret is that I didn’t get a chance to catch up with everyone. With supporters like those in Blantyre on Friday night, we’re in good hands.

Remember to buy Heart of a Lion, Willie Wallace’s magnificent autobiography, available below.

  1. From March 2010 –

Kilmarnock defender Frazer Wright has accused Celtic’s Morten Rasmussen of deliberately elbowing him in their Scottish Cup clash.

The incident came in the first half of Saturday’s quarter-final, which Celtic won courtesy of Robbie Keane’s second-half hat-trick.

The 30-year-old needed stitches in the head wound, although referee Iain Brines and his assistants missed the flashpoint.

Wright insists television replays of the incident prove Ramsussen’s guilt and hopes the SFA look into the clash and punish the Dane.

    Elbow

“He swung an elbow at me,” explained Wright. “I wasn’t happy about it but he just said he was trying to get free from me.

“I asked Sky’s David Tanner about it when we came off at half-time after someone else said the telly showed it was quite obvious he had done it.

“He said, ‘You shouldn’t be close to me’, so I said, ‘Sure, I’ll let you stand and score.’ He definitely caught me.

“If he meant to do it, it’s not very nice. Hopefully it’s something which will be looked at.

“I think if it was one of us who had done the same thing it would be picked up on.

“Someone has to have a look at it. If TV pictures prove he’s done it then I’m all for him being done, he did catch me.”

    Yes Fraser, let’s hope it is something which will be looked at . . . . . . . .

  2. Really must comment on some of the remarks directed at Andy Walker,I feel the criticism is way over the top,he seems to me to offer a balanced viewpoint, surely that is a good thing?,after all,it was the media, and it’s unwillingness to criticise deadco which helped to lead to that clubs demise. When all around were falling over themselves to damn us and our refusal to acknowledge the death of the queen mother,he was the only one to point out catholics were persona non grata in royal family, and maybe we had a point. He,on more than one occasion, has openly talked about his Celtic supporting upbringing,I could go on but, will leave it at this, can anyone name another radio clyde pannellist who has been quite so candid regarding rangers actions towards its creditors?,I quote,”a SHAMEFUL trail of debt left by them”.I know that, ultimately, people will think what they wish, thats as it should be,just wanted to offer some support to a good Celtic man who, imho,is not the soup taker he is being condemned to be on these pages, rant over.

Speaking of zombies.A lot of weeks ago i bumped into a sombre gathering of respectable looking zombies in Belfast town centre. They wear wearing suits and sashes, and some of them were clutching bibles. That hymn Abide With Me they were singing.I later found out they were attending a memorial service for two UDR men and Orange Order members whom were blown up in the town centre in the late 80s.It was strange.None of the normal zombie antics, they seemed quite civil although the atmosphere was rather tense. The anger is never far beneath the surface.

    Re fuds like Walker.

That is one of the things which makes Match of the day seem so much more professional.

The pundits tend to call it like it is no matter who is playing.

Wright’s assault on Lustig would have been called as the straight red it should have been.

  14. johnnyquest @ 17.21

The remarks about Walker`s comments on the Wright elbow incident were most certainly NOT over the top.His commentary on the assault (and that is what it was) oozed sychophancy and cowardice.

I cannot comment on those occasions you say he spoke up for Celtic but his “assessment” of the Wright situation tells me a great deal about the man….none of it positive.I don`t know what kind of a man he was; I know what he is now. He is an embarrassment and, sadly, a reflection of the kind of anti-Celtic ” journalism” required in Scotland.

I wish CQN would adopt a charity, and be committed to it, just my opinion like ,but Mary’s Meals that feeds the kids that have nothing, well that would be my choice.

When he was manager at St.Mirren my girlfriend at the time used to babysit for him. I would get a call after he’d gone out.
