Standing up for your views, San Siro

658

Another day another Uefa fine for crowd-related transgressions, the umpteenth in recent years.  When we went to Seville we knew you could take tens of thousands of Celtic fans anywhere, secure in the knowledge they would make friends with police and locals alike.  That reputation’s gone, the Fifa and Uefa awards, relics.

The world appears to have its share of Pussy Rebels.  Someone who will tarnish another’s reputation (in this case Celtic) but not have sufficient courage in their convictions (in this case their right to break Uefa rules) that they will do so in their own name, accepting consequences accordingly.

The internet is full of them too, keyboard hard men who will carry a campaign to the ends of the earth, as long as it doesn’t leave a trace of identifying information.  If their name gets out, they will run 100m in the opposite direction of their declared stance, faster than Usain Bolt at am Olympic final.  Pussy Rebels, every one of them.  Lots of people have crazy/offensive/just plain wrong views, but manage to put their names to them – nutcases, but Tiger Rebels.

If you have a view, or way you like to enjoy a game of football, stand up for it.

The incidents in Zagreb pale into insignificance compared to the mini-bus attack which left a child injured before the League Cup semi-final.  That wasn’t a rule transgression, it was proper violence.

A few days after the incident I wrote I was concerned there had been no arrest.  Despite the overwhelming outrage among Celtic fans and others, and the damage done to the victim, the reward money is still unclaimed.  Do the proper thing, report the crime and claim your reward.  We have a reputation worth putting your name to.

Not sure how things will go (on the field) tomorrow night.  Celtic have an incredible record in the San Siro over 90 minutes, four draws and I think only a couple of defeats?  A win would see us into the last 16, it’s a huge ask, but don’t bet against Ronny.

Farewell James Easdale, we’ve loved your work.

My thanks to Andy Coyle.  Don’t know him from Adam, but he called me out of the blue, met outside Celtic Park, and put £100 in my hand for our Mary’s Meals appeal.  God bless the Celtic support.

On the subject of which, you know you’re dealing with someone special when you learn Lisa Hague, Kris Commons partner, bought a ticket for CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner.  She’ll be helping out too, more on that later.  After the dinner we have Packy Bonnar, Joe Miller, Tommy Coyne and the one-and-only Tom Boyd, with Archie Macpherson speaking about Jock Stein and Patricia Ferns on song.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Welfare reform was first muted by new labour and Frank Field in particular set the ball rolling in the major car crash that is coming with food banks increasing daily

  7. Morning all.

Big day today. Much more nervous than last week. I think it is because last week my expectations were low. Now, I feel we have a chance. Still, if we play like we did last week, I will be disappointed but not downhearted if we lose.

    WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED.

  12. Today is an important football day. I fear we will suffer a sore one tonight as we have a fairly poor record away from home in Europe in recent history. I cannot see the likes of Icardi being so off form as he was at CP.

I would like to see a competitive performance but I fear we are too open at the back and could not play to effectively defend if we tried (despite our clean sheet record in domestic football). Mancini will play with plenty forward and they will get 3 on 2 (against Virgil and Jason) and 4 on 3 breakaways which they will exploit this time.

Off oot now- Don’t be getting distracted by Alfie Noakes on a match day now.

He’s either TSD taking his meds or he’s an SNP Black Ops poster. A Labour man criticisng welfare scroungers and praising the CON-DEM’s economic “recovery”. Get real!

sorry wee man just scrolled back.wan nuthin for the hoops it is ,just what I was thinking.score first min and sit back.blood ppppppppprrrrrrrrrreeeeeessssssssuuuuuuurrrrreeeeee soring.

  16. SFTB-I would play an extra MF,Henderson maybe, play as tight as we can ,maybe get to 0-0 after an hour then have a go.

  17. Anyone having a go at Paul’s article, like Neganon, should have a look at Graham Spiers article in the Herald.Stupid idiots pretending to be ultras tarring Celtic and allowing the whataboutery to perpetuate.

His article is obviously a lot of pish but when your shitting in you own bed you get smelly.

  18. I’d start Griffiths, he had them spinning in that last game, Commons will be looking for a place mind you, so! I think gms may be riding the pines tonight.

Plenty of selections and I doubt if I would be unhappy no matter who starts.

    TD

Agree with you I have no fear about tonight only excitement,

    C’mon the hoops

  20. SFTB,I’m really not sure what to expect tonight,I have similar fears to yourself but hoping that we are making progress and tonight we’ll find out.If CG is back to his best I am hopeful.

Your summation of Alfie is spot on.

    Cmon the hoops.

I’m enjoying reading the posters advertising TV sport in the pubs at the moment, last week it was Celtic v Inter and Raith Rovers v Sevco, this week its Inter v Celtic and Falkirk v Sevco…………:-) Now thats what I call whataboutery!!

  21. If we adopt a gung-ho approach from the off tonight, we will be giving away the one slight psychological advantage we have over Inter, namely, that they are through as things stand, so must decide to stick or twist.

If we go all out to attack them, we make up their minds for them to sit back and exploit the gaps we will leave on the break.

I’ll be happy to get to the last 20 mins or so at 0-0 and then start to take a risk or two, as doubt seeps in for Inter, knowing just one goal from us puts them out.

    Hail Hail!

  22. Marrakesh Express on

    Bada bing

I agree. If we play an open attacking style we’ll have to score three to qualify, which is unlikely in Italy.

RD has to be smart and keep it tight, 0-0 for an hour or so, if we can. That way we’re still in it the tie and Inter might get twitchy. To lose the usual early goal gives us a mountain to climb.

  23. tonydonnelly67,team selection is a hard one tonight,I’d like the pace of GMS but would also like the unpredictability of Commons.Very obvious statement but not losing a goal in the first 15 mins would be a big step in the right direction.Based on what I seen of Inter last week I don’t think they’ll react well to going a goal down.

I wish Lustig was fit I think he gives us something special.I’d start with Griffiths and bring on Guidetti on the second half if its still tight.

  24. BT/TD

I would start Guidetti tonight and give him the first hour , he is not as pacy as Leigh then bring on Leigh G for the last half hour , they looked to be struggling late on last week and the wee man could run them ragged with his pace .

Heading to Milan soon to meet up with some fellow Malta Thims.

Let’s hope we give a good account of our selves today and tonight both on and off the pitch.

That could fall foul of OB act, as they could deem that chant to be mocking the vertically challenged!

  28. Morning all

I am not sure that I will get to see much of the game so tonight could be personally tenser than usual- hate watching these games on the BBC updates page but they are the only thing available at work.

Bit of a ‘shot to nothing’ for the Bhoys tonight. I don’t think we are strong enough defensively to try and hold them for an hour and then for us go for broke which would be a good scenario- and feel that just trying to win by attacking them is our most realistic option. Inter did not look the usual strong defence Italian side we are used to and a similar slightly daft score to last Thursday could be on the cards.

Anyway good luck to the team and hope the support have a great time as well.
