Stjarnan have form in Scotland and Poland

661

Celtic face Icelandic champions Stjarnan in their opening Champions League qualifier, with the first leg just three weeks away.  Stjarnan knocked Motherwell out of the Europa League last season, by all accounts the Scottish club should have given a much better account of themselves.

It will be vastly more concerning to Ronny Deila that they went on to eliminate Lech Poznan in the next round.  Lech finished second in Poland, just two points behind our old pals Legia Warsaw, and the Polish season starts two weeks before Scotland’s, so there is nothing to be complacent about.

A three goal home defeat at the hands of Inter Milan ended Stjarnan’s European adventure, but by that stage the Icelandic fans must had expired their European budget for the season, the trip to the San Siro would have been a suitable place to bow out.

The other consequential information when we draw teams from near the Arctic Circle is that they are midseason and (from what I can make out) play on an artificial surface.

I’ve no idea what happened to Motherwell and Lech Poznan but there are no excuses for either team and there will be none for Celtic.  Let’s get the job done.

  1. TT,you are a tit.Lustig out of the picture?.The guy picks up a bad injury, clearing a goal scoring chance at Dundee, and you want to discard an international right back!!!!!!!!!.

You really are a pure TRUMPET.

Ronnie and the team have worked on Forrest all season. The boy looks fitter, faster, and much less injury prone, now you want shot of him.

    Again,TRUMPET.

We need a striker, end off.If VVD goes, another CH.Thats it for this season. You,being deluded will want more. You aint gettin it.

  2. Although Celtic have been linked with Genk striker Jelle Vossen, full-back Marcel Halstenberg of St Pauli and Hibernian’s Scott Allan, the only close-season addition to Delia’s squad so far has been Belgian defender Dedryck Boyata, signed in a
£1.6 million deal from Manchester City as a direct replacement for countryman Jason Denayer, who has returned to City following a year on loan at Parkhead.

Kennedy believes keeping transfer business to a minimum should be considered a benefit more than a disadvantage. “I don’t think we need too much,” he said. “We’ve got a very good squad of players. Making five and six changes every transfer window only destabilises things. You need consistency and we’ve got that at this minute.

While the Huns rip every shred of fibre out of “Signing players”to sell season books, our dumbells talk signings down. Will they ever learn?.This SMSM are just waiting on every chance to belittle us,and the numpties walk in every time.Very good,John, stick to what you do well, just keep your stupid gub away from the SMSM.

  3. John Kennedy is doing what MO’N did with the SMSM….tell them hee-haw.

FWIW….if, JK thinks that we don’t too much…good…I agree wi him.

Scepovic is being categorized in the Pukki bracket now…well, I think that the management team could well turn-up a surprise in SS.

Folk say that Balde and Pukki were given opportunities but, in those opportunities….how many strikers chances did they get?

There was a period not so long ago that, Stokes walked into the team for months on end without a goal….no- Championship-manager-type of treatment dished oot tae him?

Any time that I’ve seen SS it was in a ‘rush-job’ circumstance…I said that, RD and his team could work on James Forrest and then they’d have a player on their hands….the same applies to SS.

Too many strikers have been discarded without being properly managed….imho.

  5. All quiet on the signing front on the Celtic Way.

JK taking the deny, deflect and defend stance, I see.

The MSM will be in the dark as much as ourselves.

Meanwhile the lower league side are trying to sell STs on the back of two headline grabbing players.

One whose career is winding down and one who will be rag dolled by the agricultural strikers from the journey.

Bed time for this tired Tim who was out in the sun for much of today.

Of those 6 youngsters, Rogic and McGregor are 22 years old and Fasan and Fisher are both 21.

Two of the Lions were 22 at the time of the final, I believe. They may be untried but they are mature enough professionals.

    =============================================================

The point IS, the six are unproven, at any level, regardless of their age – Boyata is also untried in our team.

Does anyone really believe that a squad of 24 that includes SIX unproven fringe players, TWO first team players that are injury prone, and ONE new signing with no first team track record over the past six years, is the way to go?

There are even big question marks over players within the SIXTEEN (eighteen minus Lustig and Forrest)

Ambrose – can he be relied upon in Europe, or at home – many fans call him a ‘bomb scare’

    Mathews – Talented but inconsistent.

Stokes – Never done it in Europe – poor last season domestically

Scepovic – Done virtually nothing since his arrival, although very few chances.

VVD – will he be off?

That leaves us with ELEVEN whom we have confidence in – there will be injuries and suspensions to these players during the season.

We need a centre-back, a left-back, a creative midfielder and a proven striker – that would give us a squad of 28, including the youngsters/unproven – why would we need any less?

  7. Lymmbhoy, a good article by James Forrest. I agree with pretty much everything he said. No more projects

at the striker position just proven goal scorers.

Somebody earlier said “Jamesie’s time will come”.

    He is 24 in July.

Ten years from now there will still be some people saying his time will come.

The original comment was that – irrespective of what one thinks of them as players – Forrest and Lustig can be relied upon to be unfit for lengthy periods during any given season.

    I agree.

Celtic sign Dedryk Boyata in a £1.5m deal from an EPL side, but it was really Danny Wilson we wanted who was in Hearts defence that conceded 21 in 6 games against us.

I am getting a tad worried about the lack of new recruits, it is vital we get to the CL this season, the extra cash involved could see us really cement our team for future years.

I hope that Pedro doesn’t gamble as he has done in the past, was worrying to hear John Collins the other day saying that he is happy with only one in, obviously towing the party line.
