Stjarnan have form in Scotland and Poland

661

Celtic face Icelandic champions Stjarnan in their opening Champions League qualifier, with the first leg just three weeks away.  Stjarnan knocked Motherwell out of the Europa League last season, by all accounts the Scottish club should have given a much better account of themselves.

It will be vastly more concerning to Ronny Deila that they went on to eliminate Lech Poznan in the next round.  Lech finished second in Poland, just two points behind our old pals Legia Warsaw, and the Polish season starts two weeks before Scotland’s, so there is nothing to be complacent about.

A three goal home defeat at the hands of Inter Milan ended Stjarnan’s European adventure, but by that stage the Icelandic fans must had expired their European budget for the season, the trip to the San Siro would have been a suitable place to bow out.

The other consequential information when we draw teams from near the Arctic Circle is that they are midseason and (from what I can make out) play on an artificial surface.

I’ve no idea what happened to Motherwell and Lech Poznan but there are no excuses for either team and there will be none for Celtic.  Let’s get the job done.

  1. ….PFAyr, agreed, perhaps Scepovic will be more settled this year, and take his chance.

Patrick27, another goal scorer, regardless of height.

CRC, as someone pointed out yesterday, a lot of professional coached have seen something in Amido, I just wanted to give the lad a chance.

Rather than hound him after a game.

  2. Aye Sammi :-))

Broody just got off on holiday last weekend, if he gets 2 weeks, he gets back start of July, I think he will get 3 weeks off, so not back until week before the game

Just don’t think he will play in first game, could be wrong

Down here in Englandshire I watch my local side Luton Town. Ex Celt and more recently a Jag Stephen O’Donnell has just signed a two year contract for the ‘hatters’. Anyone know if he is any good please.?

That was SFTB, blowing my thoughts oot the water

How others seen him as a potential player I have no idea

SFTB pointed 8 professionals in the game seen something – no idea what mind :-)

Haha always useful for a striker. Hooper would be my preference and hope Scepovic would be the target man option

Thing is with Scepovic – he needs games. Think I was having this convo with Paul67 at Parkhead – If Scepovic gets 6-8 games in quick succession he could come good. Griffiths started to get games and now he’s flying. SS hasn’t really been given the opportunity of a load of games – but with 1 striker we play will be hard

  7. CowieBhoy, from the mhan who thought Sammy was a dud, aye, I’ll take you opinion over all 8 professional coaches:-)

Patrick27, disagree re-Hooper, don’t remember any player returning working out well.

Que half a dozen examples of why I’m wrong:-)

Glasgow and London tomorrow, so offski.

Funny how you named that in one :-)

Saw enough of Amido over 5-6 games ( not 1) to know that the jersey had shrunk. Stefan will score goals from inside the six yard box, but this does not suit Ronnie’s game or tactics. There must also be other issues as well, as I see Ronnie as being fair when he judges players and gives them chances. Take Lee, when he was well down the pecking order and looking out of it..to win his way back in.

  11. Just looking at EL draw

If Aberdeen get past the Macedonians they get Croatian side HNK Rijeka

Hope there I think, but the seeded Croats who come in at second qualifiers would be no pushovers

St J have to travel to Armenia, then if they get through get the winner of FK Crvena zvezda (SRB)/FC Kairat Almaty (KAZ)

A trip to Kazakhstan would be tough

ICT v Astra at second qualifiers – Astra were good at Celtic Park and although we were better side out there in the fog they still got a point. Apparently have strengthened further, (rich owner I believe) unfortunately can’t see ICT getting through that one

So hopefully 2/3 in the 3rd qualifying round

had one o they wee nostalgic moments when you mentioned the bats. My neighbour in Cayman put up a bat house ( At great expense) and we watched for a week to see what might happen. The nights were interspaced with lotsa G&T, then, out of the Blue, sorry, green, we counted a hundred bats within a week. A month later it was 300. All at exactly 6.20 in the evening

    Quote:

Although Jason Denayer has returned to Manchester City following a year-long loan, the £1.5million capture of Dedryck Boyata from the same club has filled the void.

John Guidetti’s departure leaves Celtic light up top, with Genk’s Belgian international striker Jelle Vossen encouraging a concrete bid from the Glasgow giants over the weekend.

But Kennedy insisted there is no desperate urge to add to the squad.

‘If I’m being honest I don’t think we need too much. We’ve got a very good squad of players. Making five and six changes every transfer window only destabilises things. You need consistency and we’ve got that at this minute.

‘If one or two became available that are going to improve the squad and give us a better standard of player then we would look at that.

‘But it’s certainly not something we’re going all-out attack to try to bring players in at this moment. We have to just wait and see what’s available.

‘Even if it means going into the Champions League campaign with what we’ve got I think we’ll be content because what we do have is Boyata as well as Gary (Mackay-Steven) and Stuart (Armstrong), both players that were pencilled in for this season and we were fortunate enough to get a bit earlier.’

  23. ” that’s Wilson and keirnan signed, two taigs hopefully that’s all we’re signing or things could go very badly for warbs. Sir David of weir should have a word. ”

  24. the glorious balance sheet on

Danny “Baresi” Wilson is an absolutely rubbish defender. He can`t even clear the 18 yard box with defensive headers, think back to the great headed assist he got for Guidetti`s opening goal in the 3-0 League Cup game at Celtic Park v Hearts last season.

If he is taking the huns for £10k a week then they are even dafter than I thought. Glibsy must be trying to put more work Duff & Phelps` way.

  25. Quantum…Cheers man..musta read it Wrong…Still think £10 or even £8 is a lot , but with no signing on Fee…Maybe…

The mindset set that got them where they are.

Love them and the smsm bumming up Weir as a brilliant coach despite the fact that his record was dire leading to his P45.

As a defender for the huns he was poor but got the Beckenbeur treatment from the media.

If he teaches their defenders what he knows it will be as follows

    1. play through the back of your opponent as the refs ameniable

2.when you get beat for pace stick up your hand and wait for linesmans help

3 all 50-50s decisions will be given to you.

    4. a yellow card is only the refs way of pretending to apply the rules of the game so don’t worry about receiving a second

5 red cards are a myth to the rangers players

  27. John Kennedy is in the management team, and so his opinion must be respected, however, although the squad is appreciably better thsn this time last year and, bearing in mind that Ronny wants to run with a more compact squad, I still believe we are four players short.

Lustig and Forrest will, going on previous performance, be injured most of the time, so let’s take them out of the picture- with Zaluska gone, this will reduce us to SIXTEEN reliable seasoned pros – we need TWENTYminimum.
