Stjarnan have form in Scotland and Poland

661

Celtic face Icelandic champions Stjarnan in their opening Champions League qualifier, with the first leg just three weeks away.  Stjarnan knocked Motherwell out of the Europa League last season, by all accounts the Scottish club should have given a much better account of themselves.

It will be vastly more concerning to Ronny Deila that they went on to eliminate Lech Poznan in the next round.  Lech finished second in Poland, just two points behind our old pals Legia Warsaw, and the Polish season starts two weeks before Scotland’s, so there is nothing to be complacent about.

A three goal home defeat at the hands of Inter Milan ended Stjarnan’s European adventure, but by that stage the Icelandic fans must had expired their European budget for the season, the trip to the San Siro would have been a suitable place to bow out.

The other consequential information when we draw teams from near the Arctic Circle is that they are midseason and (from what I can make out) play on an artificial surface.

I’ve no idea what happened to Motherwell and Lech Poznan but there are no excuses for either team and there will be none for Celtic.  Let’s get the job done.

I stand to be corrected, but it seems to be very quiet on the ‘sevco SB sales’ front ….. I would, therefore, suggest that the sales are low and tgasl is asking himself the question “what have I done ? ” …….. he has been relying on the SB money to ‘pull them through’ and, if it is not forthcoming, his plan of ‘nil personal investment’ is ‘up the creek, without a paddle’

If, as I suspect, he bails out, then it truly is the end ….. Doo, doo….doo, doo

  4. Why are some on here running down sevco,Think about what is going on at our club, coaches telling us they are quite happy with the squad of players at celtic,i dont buy into that,we all know we need a decent striker ,a good back up goalkeeper ,and a left back.and some to come on here and mock sevco signings, should look closer to home ,and see how many bad players that are still at our club.

  6. A quote from the article on Parma……..deja vu…………..we have seen this scenario, have we not………..sold furra a pound/Euro

The players and much of the staff hadn’t been paid since July. Twice in the last three months, the team had been sold for a figure in the single digits: one euro, to be precise. The price was low because the new owners assumed the roughly $100m debt that had been amassed by the man who had run the club for the last seven years. To top it all off, the current owner, Giampietro Manenti, who had bought the team three weeks earlier, had yet to prove to anyone that his bank account contained more than the single euro he had paid for the team, despite his daily assurances that the millions the players and staff were owed would be arriving “domani” (“tomorrow”).

I don’t think weakening the team to the extent that we failed to qualify for the group stages is sensible or prudent.

Downright foolhardy would be a polite term for it.

How much did the club lose by being sensible and prudent when a properly planned and funded campaign would have paid dividends?

Lawwell got away with it once, which resulted in us getting embarrassed in the group stages. He thought he’d try it again-which resulted in us being embarrassed in the qualifiers. Twice.

His idea of being sensible and prudent has been to sell our top players to balance the books in case we don’t qualify. With inevitable results.

I believe the reason JK says we are happy with what we have is an attempt to dissuade the msm from their usual Celtic admit they need x amount of players and only achieve x-5 , the spin usually ends ………….not the attractive proposition in world football they think they are ……or some such guff

I wouldnt expect to many to be applauding what “thems” are doing…………not on here anyway………

Nail on head mate. We are spending on players; it’s simply that we have unearthed quite a few duds along with a (too) few gems.

There is a gap in the market and the success of Ki, Wanyama, Forster will encourage other talented youngsters to take a punt on us. Three year springboard into a top league and the big bucks. Some might even get Celtic and stay for the glory. Who wouldn’t want to be part of a Celtic team that wins the tenth of ten in a row?

Morning bhoys! I know we need a centre forward, cover for full back and maybe another wide attacking player” but I feel there’s no point in buying too early when there’s quality to be had nearer the end of the transfer window with loans etc! I know the qualifying rounds are paramount but feel we can negotiate the first two easily enough…

John Kennedy is interviewed and asked whether the current squad COULD make the CL proper.

He answers honestly that they COULD qualify without any new players.

JK doesn;t say that we don;t need new players he says we COULD qualify with the current squad.

What would you prefer him to say?

The current squad is poor. We need a striker, a centre back, left back a creative midfielder and a back up goalie. If VVD goes then the coaching staff are going to panic.

I read nothing into the comments around this. JK is telling the press absolutely nothing and I am not surprised at that.

You do not rubbish the players you have either. I do not read one bit anything into that sound bite from JK that the media are clearly highlighting to invoke some of the reactions we have seen this morning.

The media are stirring it and some fans are jumping up and down already. Ronny knows what he is doing and what he needs.

Then you go and spoil it all with the usual drivel, liquidation was never a threat within or outwith our means, we have more than enough to carry a fair amount of debt easily as we did at the turn of the century. Only complete incompetence or crooked activities could create such a threat. Being competent is not the same as being excellent.

Spot on, and if we qualify for CL, that trumps anything on offer down south.

The good thing is when we are trying to sign a player now we have some great examples of players who have developed here – and in the case of Gary Hooper, have actually regressed since they left.

The grass isn’t always greener, and maybe even Van Dijk will see that.

I don’t believe we are excelling within our means, I think we could do much better, and I believe our means are very underdeveloped. Living within our means is also a false statement, improving our means I expect is a KPI and I think it is one which is not being developed well enough.
