Stokes for the McCluskey role

846

Anthony Stokes is in the best form of his Celtic career at the moment, arguably the best form of his life if you overlook his stunning cameo at Falkirk.  It’s hard to know if this is related to no longer being in the shadow of a more favoured son, or if Anthony has just got his ‘stuff’ together, but his intervention was absolutely crucial in our only Champions League win so far.  He had all the wisdom necessary to bate an opponent into a clumsy foul.

The psychology of a three year contract, worth more money, before performance bonuses, than the player will be able to spend is not always a good thing for a footballer, but the competition for a starting berth up front for Celtic is acute.  On the back of his winning goal on Sunday Amido Balde has been talking about his ambitions to secure a regular place, Teemu Pukki is guaranteed nothing while Georgios Samaras has been used regularly as a striker.  Anthony will remain under pressure to perform.

All of this competition will come into sharp focus in Amsterdam next week.  Celtic will come under pressure for most of the game, but this is something they are comfortable with.  We will need someone to exploit the openings Ajax will leave in their defence.  Put your money on Anthony for the George McCluskey role.

SPOT ON ……..Peter is a top notch CEO, (VERY clever / smart man) and has made a phenomenal contribution to our Club since the day he arrived …… Fortunately, the vast majority of Celtic Supporters appreciate his contribution / loyalty ….. And have you noticed how the media are VERY wary of him …… He’d rip them up for erse paper, a la ‘parrallel Universe’ ….hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

In a move to reduce unemployment in the UK, the school leaving age is being raised to 28.

I may have made one of them up

  3. A heartfelt best of luck to Fernando Ricksen and his battle with that dreadful illness. One of my fondest memories in a game of football involved Ricksen when Thommo slapped him in the lug – priceless.

Cowiebhoy, my sincere condolences on your friends passing. YNWA.

  4. Regarding the PL interview on STV no mention of sevco, in the Scotsman he is quoted as saying about them “next” which to me accepts them as being the same in the context of us playing sevco in the Scottish Cup

As regards to Fernando Ricksen personally could not stand the man, however as someone who has a family member with only weeks to live suffering from this dreadful illness I would not wish this on anyone.

Canamalar well done on the resolution keep it lit mate.

  8. Why is Peter Lawwell talking about possibly recusing himself from any decision on Dave King’s suitability as a Sevco director?

He was appointed into that position to do a job. Part of that job is to decide on such issues as “fit and proper” status. Surely all he has to do is weigh up the facts and make a decision based on right and wrong and more importantly, based on the existing rules. Just because it is Sevco does not mean he cannot do his job with a clear conscience.

If he feels he is unable to fulfil such duties then he should simply resign.

    “Work calls..”

just let it go through to call minder

  10. Does anyone understand why PL would even mention that he would consider ‘excusing himself’ from any decision with regards to an appointment to the Sevco board. What would be the conflicts of interest that would prevent him from participating in a ‘fit and proper person’ vote? Why would Sevco be any different from any other member of the SFA?

    emmmm!

  11. Not entirely convinced by Stokes. I am more eager to see Sammy sign on.

Ledley will go for nothing. The guy knows he can get a prem club and a healthy wage if he has no transfer fee. I wouldn’t have a problem with it if he didn’t go on about how he is desperate to sign a new contract.

  12. Oglach –

I have just re-read the Herald article from which I sourced my last comment and you know what? Peter doesn’t even mention the possibility of withdrawing from any decision on Dave King. All he mentions is the reasons behind his withdrawal from the decision-making process which resulted in the Scottish Cup final being scheduled for Celtic Park.

The headline is entirely misleading and I should have known better.

In my defence, I am tired and need my bed.

    :-)

  13. PL removing himself from a fit and proper test for anybody going to their board is a PR exercise, and whoever replaces him will be proxy-ing his decision.

Put it this way, imagine Craig Mather had stayed at The Rangers and was in PL’s role at the SFA, would you be happy if he was making a similar decision about our board? I can’t imagine the majority of Celtic fans would.

  14. @Oglach

Of course you are right. Lawwell has as much right as anybody to vote on the issue and has a duty to Scottish Football to do so.

The problem is, if Lawwell votes correctly, according to the rules he will be vilified by the MSM and Zombies. He will be the brains of the biggest “monster” in scottish football. (According to Shiels etc)

If he votes to help them out, we will want to chase him out of Parkhead.

It’s possible he feels comfortable that the vote will go his way without sticking his neck out. Just like when Sevco tried to get into the SPL and the First Division. We didn’t even need to vote.

  15. I watched the interview with PL, these things are edited of course. He does not suggest that he would excuse himself from anything other than a conflicting interest involving Celtic FC. The zombies have bugger all to do with Celtic FC they are a new footballing entity with delusions of grandeur despite what they and the Scottish MSM would try to have you believe.

Well off oot to stock up with things that rot kids teeth ;-) for my Halloween ‘trick or treaters’ tonight, ooh err missus.

    Hail! Hail! PMTYH

  16. Tom,

I’m sure more folks than you will swally the headlines. ;)

I wished he did say what you thought he said.

I’d take it as a sly dig at those others who should do likewise….Mr carbon monoxide.

  17. Thoughts on the personalities in Celtic news

    Forster

The guy on BBC who thinks Celtic would let him go for £6 million is havering. Craig Gordon went for £9 million. He wasn’t English , or as good and had never played in the CL

    Joe Ledley

He came on a Bosman. He will likely leave on one. No problem with that. Good player , good guy , good attitude. He has done fine for us but replacing him hardly fits into the category of trying to replace Henrik or even Victor

    Peter Lawell

Getting it right big time just now. Was criticised , inc by me, when he got it wrong earlier in career. No doubt he will be criticised again, however he deserves all the praise and plaudits he is getting just now. Also good value for what we pay him now.

Ok Tony, I’ll take the bait. For your information, the mob I stand with in the Brazen are, how can I put it, more anti board than pro. Wee Frank especially is on PL’s case all the time. I’d say your way out with the 95%, for me its more 50/50. In fact if you consider only punters who write on here, its me and Masty against you.

If I could further your point about PL keeping his powder dry….it can only be, either he knows that the new club are about to self combust, or the one doing the rounds which is the new European League starting within 5 years and as we’ll be in it, he doesnt want to start rattling Uefa cages and giving them a headache…perhaps both.

Cadizzy- I read the very good Lincoln biography [ the one wee Danny Day Lewis made into a film].

At the time of Lincoln the Republicans were very much the anti-slavery party, and the Southern Democrats were very much against abolition; so somewhere along the line the political axis in the US shifted.

In the election Lincoln won there were US political parties which stood on a blatant anti Catholic ticket.

I expect there might have been an anti dog party on the slate as well.

The book is long but well worth reading; ole Abe comes across as a genuinely heroic figure.
