Stokes for the McCluskey role

846

Anthony Stokes is in the best form of his Celtic career at the moment, arguably the best form of his life if you overlook his stunning cameo at Falkirk.  It’s hard to know if this is related to no longer being in the shadow of a more favoured son, or if Anthony has just got his ‘stuff’ together, but his intervention was absolutely crucial in our only Champions League win so far.  He had all the wisdom necessary to bate an opponent into a clumsy foul.

The psychology of a three year contract, worth more money, before performance bonuses, than the player will be able to spend is not always a good thing for a footballer, but the competition for a starting berth up front for Celtic is acute.  On the back of his winning goal on Sunday Amido Balde has been talking about his ambitions to secure a regular place, Teemu Pukki is guaranteed nothing while Georgios Samaras has been used regularly as a striker.  Anthony will remain under pressure to perform.

All of this competition will come into sharp focus in Amsterdam next week.  Celtic will come under pressure for most of the game, but this is something they are comfortable with.  We will need someone to exploit the openings Ajax will leave in their defence.  Put your money on Anthony for the George McCluskey role.

  1. Apologies , now put my glasses on……as I was saying. the way that the leg breaking tackle and body check is worshipped and encouraged in Scotland is exactly why our game remains in the gutter. The attitude of ” he loves to get stuck in” followed by ” nothing in that challenge” is never questioned. Shocking.

  2. Jmccormick – had you kept it on BBC 1 for the green pumpkins you’d have felt rosier – in a green, rosy fashion of course!

  4. Reading Chris Graham’s twitter feed. He’s angry about the final being played at Celtic Park. I remember a semi final played at Ibrox in the League Cup. (Sadly we lost) We were drawn first out of the hat so I thought they would decide game at Parkhead. No. Toss of a coin which we won. Game at Parkhead surely. No. That was only to see who would call heads or tails. At that point Joe Jordan walked out and of course Rangers win the toss and game played at Stalag Hun. I’m sure this is what happened or am I imagining this ?

  13. That really is just horrible news about Fernando Ricksen.

I wish him all the best in his fight.

Re Virgil you are of course correct but I don’t think his departure is too imminent.

Maybe a year from now if, as you say his performance is maintained/improved.

Also much depends on the level of our successes. Playing well AND in a WINNING team carries more resonance for the top table spectators.

How much attention would Vic have received had Celtic not qualified for CL or flopped in the group stages.

The team success is as important as the performance of the individual
