Stokes for the McCluskey role

846

Anthony Stokes is in the best form of his Celtic career at the moment, arguably the best form of his life if you overlook his stunning cameo at Falkirk.  It’s hard to know if this is related to no longer being in the shadow of a more favoured son, or if Anthony has just got his ‘stuff’ together, but his intervention was absolutely crucial in our only Champions League win so far.  He had all the wisdom necessary to bate an opponent into a clumsy foul.

The psychology of a three year contract, worth more money, before performance bonuses, than the player will be able to spend is not always a good thing for a footballer, but the competition for a starting berth up front for Celtic is acute.  On the back of his winning goal on Sunday Amido Balde has been talking about his ambitions to secure a regular place, Teemu Pukki is guaranteed nothing while Georgios Samaras has been used regularly as a striker.  Anthony will remain under pressure to perform.

All of this competition will come into sharp focus in Amsterdam next week.  Celtic will come under pressure for most of the game, but this is something they are comfortable with.  We will need someone to exploit the openings Ajax will leave in their defence.  Put your money on Anthony for the George McCluskey role.

Yes apologies my 2nd post wasn’t correct.

My main point was though, the zombies will be paid a fee for the rental of their stadium for the semi finals.

As to the amount it’s hard to say what this would be, in the rules it is set down as

The receipts from the Semi-Final matches in the Competition shall be pooled and shall be deemed to include monies received from all admission charges to the matches, radio and television fees, and any sums in respect of advertising within the stadium specially for the occasion.

The Association shall retain 10% of the balance, after payment of the expenses of the two matches and the clubs’ guarantees.

The remainder, after payment of the rental for the use of a ground or grounds, the scale of which shall be determined by the Board, shall be divided, equally, among the four clubs.

It’s hard to say how they determine the amount they pay and if gate receipts play a part; I suspect they do, so I suppose in that sense a boycott may mean less cash for them overall.

Have you been blinded ,by a sand storm,I never said that.I said that a neutral venue like Murrayfield would be fairer than Celtic Park ,if Celtic is in the final.

1 adult, 1 junior and 2 seniors (that I presume could also be used for kids as they cost slightly more)

Cost me £70 in total and would like to recover some – if not all – of that. Reckon I can prob shift that adult & junior tickets and would be happy to donate the other 2 to any ‘mature’ fans who could use them.

It would be on a par with those Anglo-Saxon Heritage villages down south, interactive.

You would see them all gathered round a black and white telly watching Ranjurz, and you could march around the village wearing multi-coloured twigs and moss type regalia while swallowing a gutfull of bucky then shouting WATP…:)

  12. I suspect that any use of CP and Ibrokes for Cup matches will be done on a fixed fee basis.

Remember our stadium may be out of use for CL qualifiers, and thus we will need to find alternative venues, and probably need a little assistance to do so

( ie there will be a bit of paperwork in CL entry around proposed stadium, team colours etc)

Given our recent record in cups I will worry about whether or not I attend and make a decision if the problem arises

Parkhead: Will stage the Scottish Cup final

With Hampden closed as an athletics track is laid for the Commonwealth Games, the SFA board decided that Rangers will host both semi-finals on April 12-13 while the final will be played at Parkhead on May 17.

When Hampden was being rebuilt in the late 1990s, decisions on final venues were taken on an ad-hoc basis in a bid to avoid teams being handed home advantage.

The SFA is now contractually obliged to host semi-finals at Hampden but it could have temporarily reverted to the previous norm of delaying decisions on last-four venues until after the quarter-finals to avoid a situation where Ibrox could be less than half full for a clash involving two smaller teams.

But the SFA claims clubs want advance knowledge and dismissed suggestions games could be played at Murrayfield, the Edinburgh home of Scottish rugby while insisting any venue would need to be able to accommodate at least 25,000.

In a series of tweets, the SFA said: “It is important for fixture planning schedules to announce the venues as early as possible.

“Ave s/f attendances are 25k+ so only two football stadia can accommodate those numbers.

“Member clubs (we are a members’ organisation) preferred to know in advance where s/f and finals would be held.

“Stadium rental, insurance, stewarding etc all require planning well before finals and semi-finals. More cost-effective to arrange in advance.

“In terms of non-football venues, the Board’s view was that revenue should remain within football.”

SFA president Campbell Ogilvie earlier said in a statement: “We are fortunate in Scotland to have three world-class football stadia and, with Hampden Park due to undergo redevelopment work ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, it is natural that we would seek to utilise both Celtic Park and Ibrox Stadium as venues for Scottish football’s premier cup competition.”

Celtic Park, which last hosted the final when Hearts beat Rangers in 1998 during the rebuilding of Hampden, is Scotland’s largest football stadium with a capacity of 60,355, making it a similar size to Murrayfield. Ibrox holds 51,082.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell is a member of the SFA board but he stated he sat out the venue selection process. And he defended the decision to name the venues so early.

“A decision like that, where Celtic or Celtic Park are competing against other stadia for the final, I would excuse myself because I’m conflicted clearly, and a decision was made by other board members,” he said.

“There’s a lot of planning that goes into it. The sponsors need to know where they are. It’s the road to Celtic Park rather than the road to Hampden.

“There is a lot of preparation. There will be many permutations in there that will make sure Celtic Park is full and rather than taking the risk of delaying it, it gives us time to prepare. I guess there is no right answer, you just make the best answer with the facts available.

“I guess it’s a question of choices. Hampden is unavailable and the SFA have a choice where to take it.

“When you compare Celtic Park to other stadia around Scotland, it’s certainly the biggest. We cater for the Champions League, these are huge events, and we have every confidence of delivering a great cup final for them.

“It’s a great honour and it will be a fantastic occasion. We believe Celtic Park is the biggest and best. You can see on Champions League nights, the atmosphere that is created. No matter who comes from around Europe, whether it’s AC Milan or Barcelona, they say Celtic Park is the best.

“So we are delighted to have it and it will be a real thrill.

“There’s incentive to get to the Scottish Cup final and win it every year but this might give us a wee bit of an additional incentive for us to get there and play the cup final at our own stadium.”

Rangers finance director Brian Stockbridge welcomed the use of Ibrox for the last four.

He said: “The Scottish FA’s decision to play these ties at the home of Scotland’s most successful club underlines the fact that Ibrox remains one of European football’s elite arenas.

“Of course we hope to travel far in this competition ourselves but no matter who plays at Ibrox they can be certain of the warmest of welcomes.”

  17. Marrakesh Express on

The huns have said they were going to boycott every club who ‘punished’ them, and I heard one rhyme them off…DU, Aberdeen, Hibs etc. But he said no boycott of CP as they couldnt send a team there without support. Hypocrisy and irony, but its a long way off if it ever happens at all.

  18. I thought this was funny.

At work Mrs Doc fell out with a Sevco fan a couple of months back, usual reason, he wouldn’t accept facts as facts.

Last week she was talking to another colleague when the Sevcovian walked up, they had been talking about a Charity dress up day for Hallowe’een, everybody pays a couple of quid to go to work in fancy dress. The Sevcovian pipes up that he will go to a fancy dress shop and hire something cool. Mrs Doc retorts, “why go to that expense? I’m sure you have an old Rangers top, wear that and go as a Zombie!”

I’m quite proud of Mrs Doc. True story though.

  19. Rangers only director, Bryan Stockbrydge, said:

“Campbell’s decision to play these ties at the Asbestos Dome underlines the fact that he’s repaying us for the many good nights out that he’s had with the EBTs. Furthermore, he has assured us that the Big Hoose will also be considered for the final, if there is a conflict of interest with any of the finalists (especially if it involves a team from Glasgow that plays in green).”.

  20. Now to dissect it a little.

Its operation save the Sevco 2nd Rangers , simple as that.

And as for the final , I prefer a neutral venue, (except the deathstar) allready Sky Sports spin is “Celtic handed a massive advantage, should they reach the final”.

Why all this angst about Murrayfield, its a big stadium, rent it, use it.

Are we really to believe that any match not involving Celtic or Sevco 2nd Rangers will attract a crowd of 25,000 plus ?

Keeping money in the game, for whom ? Sevco 2nd Rangers obviously, particularly , if as likely, they wont be taking part in a semi final (if they meet anyone above them in the league structure apart from Motherwell, they will go out).

I wont be going to Ibrox for any reason, nor will I attend any Celtic v Sevco 2nd Rangers match.

This is a real golden chance to make a boycott work , and for good reasons.

Dont give them one thin dime Celtic fans, not one thin dime.

  21. Has this been awe nooed
