Strikers like Anthony

578

When Anthony Stokes picked himself off the ground having won a penalty yesterday his eagerness for a piece of the action was clear.  Having missed the majority of the season through injury he is a player with a point to prove.

The penalty correctly went to Kris Commons but Anthony still had an opportunity to remind us what a valuable player he can be.  He is not the strongest or most skilful player at the club but he is a natural goal-scorer.

Competition for a place in Celtic’s attack has seldom been more acute.  Lassad, Miku, Samaras, Stokes and Watt are all pressing for a place alongside Gary Hooper.  Each of them will have to consider the possibility of new arrivals in the summer, when securing a place in the squad, never mind the starting line-up, will be a challenge.

Anthony’s return to fitness, and form, is a timely reminder of what he brings to Celtic, and what we have missed once or twice this season.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

I lost him one day and wandered up to The Wee Mans bar and got the bus home to Hamilton without him, Bhoy did he get from my Old Dear months and months of torture!!

That was my first Hampden game too and we had tickets for the Rangers end which the old man swap at the stadium, I always wondered how he knew we would just walk into a opposing fan and his son with the same problem!!

I took my 12yo nephew to the League Cup final about seven years ago. Got off at Mt Florida, and on way round to the Celtic end I told him exactly where to stand and wait for me if we got split up.

At half-time,he said he was off to the toilet-I felt like rolling his trouser legs up first, certainly had to in my day-and took about twenty minutes to return.

Martin O’Neill wants Efe Ambrose to somersault his way to Sunderland because seemingly having Titus Bramble in your team doesn’t provide enough comedy value for the good people on Wearside.

These comments are a disgrace. The guy has been excellent for Celtic and had one bad match in the Champions League. I would hope Celtic would think twice about speaking to these clowns.

  9. Before coming in to work this morning, I was having a wee look through last nights CQN posts. Noticed that Kojo got a wee bit upset at being called an imbecile (doesnt take much to upset the poor wee soul though does it ?).

I was thinking there’s a heck of a lot worse things he could be called but when I got in to work I decided to look it up in my dictionary to get the full definition.

Whilst thumbing through the dictionary, I happened to look up and there before me was my hun boss. I put the dictionary away. No further explanation needed.

  10. twists n turns,

Brilliant! I shared the same experience as you although I was placed at the front of the Celtic end, Jungle side. We spent our time pre-kick off playing acrobatics on the staunchens (Sp?) A world away from today’s match day experience. Still, we were watching the Champions of Europe!

  11. It’s interesting the concept of resting players before the season ends to get them rested, but back in training, in time for the champions league qualifiers next season. I would like to see us win the Scottish cup but not at the expense of the champions league. It may be the time to give some of the younger/fringe players a chance in the cup. Unfortunately we would struggle to win it if we did that!!

The ins and outs this summer will also be interesting. I reckon Rogne (too slow), Miku, Murphy, McCourt and Lassad will all leave. We may also lose one or two valuable players (Hooper and Wanyama). However the two of them should bring in circa £20m.

If we did get £20m for them i wonder how much Neil would be given to reinvest in the team….£12m?? £12m to sign a central defender, left winger, defensive midfielder and one or two strikers. That’s about £2.5m per player. That wouldn’t’ be a bad budget at all. Although it’s hard to think we could replace Hooper and Wanyama (especially Wanyama) with similar level players. The counter argument is that we almost signed Rudnovs last season for £3m. He has since scored 10 goals in 22 games for Hamburg in the Bundesliga. I think that would suggest that he’s at a similar level to Hooper.

As this blurb was not addressed to anyone in particular I assume this is your take on the current hot topic ie. the Green Brigade.

By trying to play down this issue by turning it into another songs debate either you are missing the point entirely(ie.the importance of having this issue regarding the harassment of Celtic fans clarified) or you have another agenda altogether.

If it is the former then it is a weak summation not to mention a spurious link with your visit to Bellahoustoun Park.

I suspect that the playersd for next season have alreday been identified. I don’t expect us to sign more than one player for over £2m. We won’t change the strategy now. We will buy low. It may cost us a spot in the Champions League but if we do our business early enough we should have a chance. We have lost the element of surprise. Teams know how we play so we may have to change a few things around and even our style of play a bit. Juventus had their tactics to nullify our threat. There is no shame in that but we didn’t have any luck on the night either.

I hope that next season we get the same opportunity in the group stage. It will be harder to get there though. I have no doubt about that.

    Just dropped in to say….

I’m saddened by the treatment that the GB have been enduring.

I’m also taken a-back by some posters who, naively think that

the bored/board will somehow – fix all this stuff with the cops ?

From where I’ve been viewing things – the trail of this conflict

leads all the way back to the – shame game.

Celtic knock Walters animals oot the SC and all hell breaks loose.

All the hell that broke loose that night came from the huns and their fans.

Celtic had – 3 players booked – the huns had – 3 players sent-off and had the rest of their players booked as well. If the truth was told…the huns could have had – 5-8 players sent-off that night. We all know what happened in the fall-out…ALL the huns walked free and – oor Neil took the wrap ?!?!?

Now…what happened next was key….the morning after the shame game…Salmond called a Govt Summit and, required BOTH teams to attend the summit. THAT…for me, is were Celtic FC dug their own graves !!!

I’ll tell you why…now…I know this might sound like anarchy but, I think Celtic FC/PLC should have called their own press conference and announced that they would not be attending ANY Govt Summit, on the basis of having – 3 players booked !!!

If my memory serves me correctly…I’m sure that top Cop – Corrigan, DEMANDED that the GB attend a meeting with the Cop’s around about this time and…the GB told them to stuff-it(or words to that effect) !!!

Anyway….this would imo…have dragged the dirty little secret of this country onto the world stage !!! But, Celtic went to the summit and signed a deal with the devil(Salmond) which has seen the Celtic support, the GB in particular – SHAFTED at every turn since. Now, I’m not going to be jumping on any bandwagons at this time but…DON’T say that…I’ve not been telling CQN about the nature of the beast of – The Celtic Bored/Board !!! The Celtic delegation who attended Salmond’s Summit – Don’t/Didn’t/NEVER have spoken for me…now’s not the time to go into why…I don’t fancy being called a Troll at this time of the morn :o)))

To cut a long story short…the ONLY way to deal with this Bored/Board is to not allow yourself to be taken-in by them. When I hear fholk(well intentioned guid-fholk) talking about giving yer money to Celtic ??? NO…yer not !!!

Celtic is the fans but…the fans are on the ootside..looking in !!!

Starve the bored/board WHO ARE NOT CELTIC of your money – get rid of them – then let CELTIC(you – the fans) become CELTIC !!!

Afterall…when Fergus was at the helm…he insisted that – not 1 family or, individual would control Celtic FC – EVER again !?!?!

I would be the happiest mhan on this earth if…the BEST fholk in the world stopped being taken-in by this mythology. It’s EASY…just try. Well…it isny really….broke my heart no going to see the Cellic anymore…well not as much. If there was a Santa who would listen to me…there would be a new JUNGLE for an extended GB and…Cellic supporters like – Paul 67 – Matt McGlone – Jeannette Findlay – George Galloway would be the TOP figures running my Cellic FC.

To borrow an old ‘Celt’s For Change’ slogan….

Saw the Champions of Europe for the first time in 67/68 age 6. Hertz were opponents and Celts not in the hoops which was really confusing at the time. 19. Good statement from the Celtic Trust at http://www.celtictrust.net/?func=d_home_article&id=397

Trust Statement re civil rights infringements

Published on Monday 18th February, 2013 by Celtic Trust

The Celtic Trust wishes to make its position clear in relation to recent events surrounding the treatment of Celtic supporters and particularly our comrades in the Green Brigade. We, like most fans yesterday, were not clear why Section 111 was empty. When the GB decided not to attend two games in November, we organised a ‘Stand up for the Green Brigade’ protest in the 12th minute which was very well supported. We would have been happy to do so again but obviously the events of Saturday were not anticipated, but the reasons behind their absence have now become clear.

The Green Brigade have now issued a statement which contains a number of points which we believe are of particular relevance. Firstly, they have indicated that a meeting took place between Celtic and some unnamed supporters’ organisations before Christmas at which the targeting of particular Celtic supporters was discussed. For the avoidance of any doubt among the wider support (the GB are in no doubt about our position) the Celtic Trust did not attend any such meeting; we were not invited to any such meeting; we were not aware that such a meeting had taken place until afterwards and we would not ever, under any circumstances, have participated in such a meeting.

Probably more importantly, we are able to confirm that the kinds of harassment of Celtic supporters which they describe and the targeting of our fans (mainly but not exclusively GB members) using the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act continues apace. Indeed it appears from our knowledge to be accelerating as we move towards the review period at the end of this season. We know of no Celtic fan who has actually been convicted under the Act except those who through fear or ignorance have pleaded guilty. However, as we predicted when the Bill was going through, many, many young fans have been arrested either at games or from home (or at airports!) and dragged back and forth across Scotland to attend preliminary court hearings on charges which are ultimately dropped or result in a Not Guilty verdict. The Crown Office could also be said to be preparing for the Review by instructing the police to increase arrests under the Act and by appealing Sheriff Court Not Guilty verdicts. The events of the past week are entirely consistent with that view.

As a member body of Fans Against Criminalisation, we have, together with the other organisations, continued to monitor the situation and to record all incidents of which we are informed. In addition, the Trust and its officers have worked very hard to support any fan who has been targeted in this way by providing support and advice and by representing them, if necessary, in terms of recovering their season ticket rights. At our own AGM which took place on Saturday before the game, we pledged our continuing commitment to this activity and discussed increasing the resources going into this work in preparation for the upcoming review of the Act. It now appears that we need to bring these plans forward and, in particular, it seems vital that a large public event should now be organised to highlight the rampant abuse of Celtic fans and the increasing intensity with which their civil rights are being infringed.

In the meantime, we call on all fans who find themselves targeted in this way to contact either FAC or the Celtic Trust and give us the details. We, in turn, will help you in any way we can.

Finally, we call on Celtic FC to make a public statement on the issues raised by the GB. It is simply not tenable for the current custodians of the Club to remain silent while fans are being subjected to this appalling treatment.

  20. Livibhoy,

You are probably right but there’s no reason why we shouldn’t sign 2-3m players. They could still be sold on for a considerable profit.

The reason we haven’t signed too many in the past was we simply didn’t have the money. I am not saying we should go into debt or anything like that. I’m saying if we get £20m in sales reinvesting £12m of that in the team should be ok. That still leaves £8m to be reinvested in the club.

You’re right about the champions league. It will be very hard to qualify again. In saying that a lot of our players have improved a lot in the last 12 months and that should help us. Wilson and Lustig are the best examples of this. I can’t believe how good Wilson has looked in the champions league!!

    Great post

I began going to the Jungle with my dad about 63

not a lot to cheer about back then, but I loved the experience.

We would get in early so as we got a barrier, I would be plunked on top of it and sat facing the park.

I would love it when the macaroon and spearment chewing gum guy would come along

always a wee treat in days when money for sweets was scarce.

My memeory of the pale ale cans are of a very different nature, and can still to this day

recapture that horrible disgusting feeling of the sudden heat on the back of my leg.

After the game it was standing at the door of Flynn’s in London Rd, with the packet of plain crisps, tring to find my wee blue salt bag, whilst my dad and uncles enjoyed their pint. Sometimes that doorway would resemble a creche.

In those days I only ever knew 2 woman that went to CP, it was a workingman’s pastime back then.

Nostalga is a wonderfult thing, Like you, on a cold rainy day I envied the guys in the wee blue bubble cars watching from inside with the heater on ,but I ‘m glad we got away from the days of the trough that ran the full length of the old Celtic End.

  22. Would anyone like to speculate on how much, if anything, the GB’s activities and initiatives add (in £££s) to the bottom line of Celtic FC?

  23. niallo83

I’m still not entirely convinced by Wilson to be honest. I hope he proves me wrong though. Lustig looks a player though. I hope wer get money to spend on quality players but I fear it won’t happen. If you sign a player for £3m you have to give him the wages of a £3m player. That then gives us a problem. The guy would be on more than the rest and the other players would want more. It’s all about the structure we have at the moment. I think we can trust the management team to bring in the right players at the right price. The league will be a formality again next year. Focus on the CL for the first month or so of the season. Getting into the group stage giaves the club so much! It is almost essential. We must make it our priority to give us a good chance of playing at the top level. If we go out then more players may decide to seek pastures new as the transfer window will be open and the appeal of playing for Celtic with no European football may not appeal too much to certain individuals.

  24. Nothing really to add to the GB debate except a couple of things. Im in my 40’s and still like a bit of crack. To me, the GB looks like total crack.

If you don’t think any of the issues currently affect you, well think again, an erosion of civil liberties is something that we should all be concerned about.

Aye, the club needs to make a statement. Plod has gone way way too far on whatever they are supposed to be policing and the club is now obligated to explain where they stand and what issues they have concerns with.

Can The Celtic Trust publish actual stats/ numbers to illustrate the scale of harassment. Can anyone ? It would help me to understand more about the relative scale of the problem.

At the moment we have anecdotes and passionate views- not enough for me to construct an objective position. It is worthwhile remembering that the GB whilst creating some spectacular events and adding much welcome atmosphere, operate in what sometimes appears to be, a non-inclusive way. They have made decisions that impact all the support – but never sought everyone’s view, that does not go down well sometimes. I don’t mind being outvoted and agreeing to support the majority decision – but not being asked/ consulted is annoying as hell.

Give us evidence guys. Help the fans, who are naturally inclined to get behind the good work done in 111, understand a clear picture of scale. IE If there are approx 20 guys from 60,000 being victimised or harassed – we need to know what these guys are doing/not doing to attract such unwanted and unfair attention. Is it less than 20 or significantly more?

What seems clear, this is too big an issue to be ignored.

  29. Macjay, TinyTim, Rubicon, Vmhan

    thank you.

I was having breakfast there and reminiscing about those good old days and the differences now. As I spoke about my young grandson and his electronic device, whatever it was, (I suspect it’s a updated version of a complex contact lens because I am sure I hear him talking about an eye pad, and I am pretty smart at figuring these things out) it reminded me of a relative giving me a transistor radio to take to the games. For any younger readers it was the early version of an ipad, about the size of a half brick and weighed about the same as aforementioned brick. I wonder why it came with an instruction leaflet, since it only had an on/off switch and a tuning dial? Anyhow, this marvel would mean I no longer needed to depend on previously referred to half time scoreboard with ABC 1-0 2-0 1-1 etc. Oh no, just tune into David Francie on radio shortbread and you will be the most popular bhoy in your area of the ground. “What’s the Rangers score son?”

Sadly this modern technology marvel arrived with inherent problems. The tuning dial needed the touch of a NASA technician to get the frequency spot on, and even then, you had to suffer the odd whistle and other interference. I assumed for years David Francie had a bad throat as it always sounded as though he was clearing it. Sounded a bit like one of those taps being turned on that add hot milk to the coffee pots in cafe’s.

Even if you managed to get commentary, this wee box of tricks was just not built to last. No motherboard, memory card or other more technical detail with the old transistor. Take the back cover off, and it housed a PP3 battery. Again, for the younger reader, it was a battery about the size of a fag packet, with 2 terminals which for some reason I couldn’t resist putting my tongue on to get a wee jolt. These two terminals were where the battery clipped in. Unfortunately, the wires which connected the terminals were about 1/64″ dia. (thats no even half a mil in new money) and they terminally failed, which is probably why they were called terminals.

As luck would have it, the one man I was aware of in my village who had a soldering iron was a relative of mine, and he faithfully restored my trusty tranny (can I call it that these days) back to perfect working order, assuming you can call whistling and coffee milk noises perfect)

Anyhow, that is why I probably grew the muscle tone in my right arm. (behave at the back). Between the weight of the battery and the 3lb of solder (just over 1kg for you young uns), every Saturday became akin to a session at the gym.

    And that’s another thing….Sat at 3pm. That’s when football should be played……….

A significant amount. This is one of the reasons, I don’t really buy the line that PL is behind the moves to get rid of them. If there’s one thing we all agree on, it’s that the bottom line is very important to the man, and I really doubt he’d be willing to throw away not only the GB season ticket income, but the residual losses, unless he was being forced to.

I think the CST statement (posted by Big Nan above) is very important. They say they haven’t had any meetings such as those described by the GB statement (has anybody confirmed that it actually is an official GB statement btw?), and didn’t know any such meeting was on the cards. What other supporters groups do we have? There can’t be that many, so it shouldn’t be too hard to narrow down who was at these meetings.

I’ll be honest ( and this is why I ask the question about whether it’s an official GB statement), I’m amazed that PL has found a set of fans’ groups that are able to keep such statements secret for so long.

I think the Police are at it here, and it’s not just about turning fan against fan. It’s about ramping anti-board sentiment, because they know that PL can’t be seen to interfere with policing.

The harassment the GB received is unquestionable and unwarranted and it’s got to stop, but I genuinely think something else is at play here.
