Strikers like Anthony

578

When Anthony Stokes picked himself off the ground having won a penalty yesterday his eagerness for a piece of the action was clear.  Having missed the majority of the season through injury he is a player with a point to prove.

The penalty correctly went to Kris Commons but Anthony still had an opportunity to remind us what a valuable player he can be.  He is not the strongest or most skilful player at the club but he is a natural goal-scorer.

Competition for a place in Celtic’s attack has seldom been more acute.  Lassad, Miku, Samaras, Stokes and Watt are all pressing for a place alongside Gary Hooper.  Each of them will have to consider the possibility of new arrivals in the summer, when securing a place in the squad, never mind the starting line-up, will be a challenge.

Anthony’s return to fitness, and form, is a timely reminder of what he brings to Celtic, and what we have missed once or twice this season.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

The stench of Orc on here is making me wretch !

    Who are these Orcs.

There are several posts today alluding to interlopers, new posters and a possible hun influence.

I am not often posting outwith moonhowling hours, so I could be wrong, but I see folks expressing valid reasonably held personal views, expressing both support and questions for both sides of the discussion.

Am I naive, blind or just old and stupid?

Can we all attempt to read differing opinions without being sceptical of the poster?

    ———————————————————

This post should be a landmark on here, no more buzzing and hints at the so called huns, it’s time posters on here back up their claims.

  2. Margaret McGill … If you feel so strongly about what is happening…

Write an email or letter to the club asking for an answer?

    You may be surprised ….

They may respond to your request ???

  4. Strathclyde Police would have loved the old N.Ireland Special Powers Act. It was a real doozy. A cop or somesuch just had to think you were about to commit an offence and that was that. The SNP (and if there are SNP supporters/workers on here they should have challenged the party) got their version passed in the Scottish Parliament. That is the reason for the harassment. The cops can just say whatever they like and the courts have to act upon it.Because that action they affects car insurance, job security, job promotion and a host of other things then it infringes Human Rights. It’s a job for lawyers.

Having said that, the Celtic Board, having led and done so well through all the Sevco debacle, need to flex a bit of muscle. They have the power because of the money they bring to the game, and their willingness to be fair to the other clubs. They should also tackle John Fleming while they’re at it–yesterday was just one incident in a long long line of “incidents”.

It is deplorable, however, that on a weekend when Celtic played some sublime football, that the performance is overshadowed by the treatment some of the support are getting from the police, and also apparently by Celtic stewards aiding and abetting them.

This gives infiltrators scope to spread poison and dissent at a time when the club are doing so well.

I posted earlier that if a legal fund was needed to challenge some of the police behaviour I will gladly give. Divided we will be beaten. If we come together and close ranks they have no chance. Form the shield wall–No Pasaran.

  5. The Green Brigade???

    Knickers in Twists,

Is this the same brigade who refused to join in the singing at the Juve game cos they didnae start it????

And, then were boo’d when they started a song????

  6. I was stopped by the police when trying to enter Paradise.

He asked me if I had any alcohol on me.

    I said, “no”.

Another time I was asked, by a policeman, to display the contents of my Celtic Superstore plastic carrier bag.

I never realised it was Peter Lawwell’s fault.

My time at Paradise, before, during and after, is the highlight of my week. After 56 years I have a fair idea of what I like. I like supporting Celtic.

I have many other interests, but as this is a Celtic website, I just wanted to say, I really enjoy the way Lenny has the team playing and our current status, football wise, here and abroad.

  7. I mean Margaret ??

If all this harassment of innocent supporters is down to OUR board …

    For no reason whatsoever…

What does our board hope to gain by such action ?

There will always be a GB at CP in one form of growing evolving form or another.

No need to throw away season tickets fellas.

What irks me is the current custodians attempt to thwart the GB. This is probably not for financial reasons since they have already bought their season tickets (and believe that there are “mair customers oot there onywize” a la kojo), but in case they have the possible embarrasment and conundrum in having to defend poppy like arguments and such ilk to the right wing establishment.

I think they would rather not have that troublesome self image trarnishing for the duration of their custodianship.

I mean it could affect their careers.

Notice that they are custodians of our great club. Not owners.

Things are not making sense, I’ve seen the harrassment outside, it is totally wrong what the Police are doing but I think people have to realise that the Huns have been terminated and it was always going to be difficult after their demise.

  21. All part of Lawell’s (and the board’s) preparations to position Celtic for a future move to England. The calculation being that we have to remove those elements of the support and their “vocal political views” that won’t sit well down south and the Board’s thinking is that now is exactly the right time to take this fight on; league’s won this season and for the foreseeable future and plenty of cash to ride out the inevitable slump in attendance this season and next.

  22. For ” over- zealous ” read ” cheating ” .

Perhaps to ‘ influence’ the referees we should have awarded them an ‘EBT’ instead of a compilation DVD!!!

Celtic’s DVD dossier on Juve ref ‘irritates’ UEFA

Celtic have sent a dossier to UEFA over the performance of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco. Picture: SNS

By MARK WALKER AND PAUL DRURY

    Published on Monday 18 February 2013 00:00

UEFA are believed to be “irritated” with Celtic manager Neil Lennon for sending a DVD dossier of complaint about Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco to them.

Lennon was unhappy at Mallenco for not awarding Celtic penalties during the Champions League loss to Juventus last week after his players were manhandled at corner kicks by over-zealous defenders. Lennon revealed on Friday that he had instructed his club to send a DVD to Uefa highlighting the referee’s performance and seeking an explanation for his leniency over the wrestling at corner-kicks.

However, European football’s governing body are set to be far from impressed when the special delivery from Glasgow drops into their mailbox in Switzerland. A Uefa source has stated that they are “irritated” with the development and concerned that it could be seen to influence the refereeing team for the return leg in Turin next month.

And although Uefa willacknowledge receipt of Celtic’s complaints, it is believed to be extremely unlikely they will take any action on any of the Spanish officials who took charge of the game last week.

Mallenco is highly regarded at Uefa and is already on the Fifa list for next year’s World Cup finals in Brazil. He’s also been handed the latest El Clasico game in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final at the Nou Camp later this month between Barcelona and Real Madrid – the third time in just two years he’s been given the responsibility to handle the tie.

Meanwhile, Italian police are insisting on unprecedented security arrangements for Celtic supporters travelling to the return leg of the last 16 tie in Turin next month.

Juventus have told Celtic officials that the name of each fan must be written on his or her individual ticket. Fans are also being told to take photo ID to the Juventus Stadium on6 March and demanding that Celtic ticket staff scrutinise details ahead of the match. If the ticket and ID don’t match up entry would be refused, potentially leading to tension among other fans queuing outside.

One long-standing season ticket holder said: ”I have called off the trip. It could be chaos as IDs are checked against the name on the ticket. I have been going to Celtic games abroad for years and I’ve never had a ticket with my name on it.”

Glasgow and Turin have actually been twin cities for a decade. After the 3-0 defeat last Tuesday, some Celtic supporters shook hands and swapped scarves with the triumphant Italians, but Celtic fans have been warned to take security seriously if they are planning to make the trip to Turin.

Steven Cairney, of the Affiliation of Celtic Supporters Clubs, said fans will have to have their wits about them in Turin.

He said: “When the draw was made in December, I said ‘anyone but Juventus’. We are strongly advising our members who don’t have one of the 2,000 official tickets to steer clear of the Juventus end. I don’t think either club wants Celtic fans in the wrong part of the ground.”

While Celtic bounced back from their Champions League disappointment with a thumping 6-2 win over Dundee United on Saturday, Juventus lost 1-0 at Roma.

You both make good points – as have others at various points this evening.

Problem is – that when some question motives or clarification of; hearsay, a bland or unsubstantiated statement – then too often the poster gets attacked for being at best a happy-clapper (board supporter or similar) – or at worst a hun!

Me – there is something deep-seated about this GB situation. There is a fundamental lack of communication (by one or both parties – I don’t know).

The first GB statement raised questions that need answered – however its impact was somewhat devalued by the poster’s moniker. The subsequent statement (same text) appears to be the official release – I ask myself: were I to make a profound newsworthy case for my organisation (and how I perceive they are being treated) – would I have not taken council on how it was worded and ensured that it reached my audience without need for questioning?

I have witnessed first-hand; misquotes, rabble-rousing rhetoric and downright animosity divide a Celtic Support in the past. Communication won the day – and saved the Club!

Maybe the Blog should concentrate (these next few days) on ascertaining facts before condemning all and sundry – we have a duty to protect our Club and all it stands for and that includes the Board and the Support in question.
