Strong message from Supporters Association

926

Running late today…….

The Celtic Supporters Association are in their seventh decade so have seen it all before, albeit the matters the felt necessary to comment on today are uncommon in modern times.  After their AGM yesterday they issued the following statement:

“We do not condone in any circumstances the letting off of smoke devices of any kind, the dangers to the health of our supporters should at all times be paramount in everybody’s thoughts. We have quite a number of members who are of the senior variety, and the dangers to anyone with respiratory problems are greatly increased by coming into contact with smoke.

We also do not condone the use of pyrotechnics of any kind; again the dangers to our own supporter’s health should be paramount at all times.

Finally, the deliberate damaging of property within any stadium is not acceptable, and leaves a stain on the great reputation of the Celtic Support. The seats that were broken at Fir Park was blatant vandalism; nothing else.”

I share Association president Joe O’Rourke’s hope that this is a watershed moment for the support, but most of us know at least one person who thrives on chaos and notoriety.   We need as many strong voices to step forward as possible, someone with experience of putting genies back in bottles would be handy too.

Many thanks to those who participated in our Cinc Senti’s auction, which closed yesterday, raising £102 for charity.  More on where the money will be going later in the week……..

“Yes those were the days, when you didn’t reach for your laptop, phone or tablet or whatever to see what you had missed in terms of things Celtic. Those days when, unless you were from east Kilbride, you had no idea what the eather was like there— and to be honest, you had absolutely no interest in finding out!….. Back to the days when you had never heard of Kojo and his way of speaking or writing, when no one had ever Brattbakkedinanager, would recognise a cash strapped scrofulous hillbilly outside Beverley Hills, and the only Battered Bunnet you knew of belonged to your Grandad.”

Would you agree that ‘so called Celtic fans’ who break the stadium rules by using foul and abusive language should be banned?

Don’t really share your angst. Seats were smashed in a section of the ground. Folk who had tickets for those seats will be asked to speak with the club about what occurred, ahead of which, they’re not permitted to buy further match day tickets. What did you expect? What would you do differently?

  4. Day 1 = 30 seats broken; Day 2 = 80 seats; Day 3 = 200 seats.Continuing at the same rate of exaggeration, there would have been ten million ( honest !) after a fortnight. Celtic had to ban them before it got ridiculous 0:-)

My guess is that the 128 banned were 128 from section 111 who went to the Motherwell game giving their full details in order to obtain a ticket from Celtic. The other 250 are likely to be the rest of section 111 who didnt go “officially”.

A wee question- if you gave your details in order to get an away ticket, would you wreck your seat?

It appears this is a knee jerk reaction in order to placate the MSM and some of the anti GB element amongst our support

  8. Angela Haggerty writes the following and I for one endorse every word.

It’s the media. It’s the PLC. It’s Peter Lawwell. It’s the soup-takers, the pantywetters, the bloggers. Clearly it’s everyone but the troublemakers who are to blame for the trouble that is following the Celtic support around these days.

This problem has been brewing for a while. The NoPyroNoParty Brigade, alongside the freedom fighters who haven’t yet spotted a peace process over in the Six Counties, are just a cut above the rest of us, of that they are convinced. It’s a We Are The Ultraz mentality of superiority and disrespect.

But be assured of one thing: these people are a tiny minority. A vocal minority, particularly if you observe them on Twitter, but they are small in number and their days are running out.

    No more excuses.

Seats are not broken as a consequence of celebrating goals, even if Kris Commons is on fire and Celtic are putting on a show. Football games, particularly the last two that Celtic fans have enjoyed, are thrilling enough without a side order of smoke bombs, and I’m sure Fraser Forster could do without them, not to mention disabled Celtic fans who have spoken out about their fears.

And while we’re on the topic of hot debates within the Celtic support, this idea floating around that Celtic is somehow dishonouring its Irish roots unless the club and fans shut up and accept IRA chanting at football stadiums is disingenuous and self-serving for those who see a football game as an opportunity for a kid-on battle.

There is a peace process in Ireland. The people of Ireland do not want a return to the days of The Troubles, and when they remember and respect the memory of their dead, I’m sure it’s done far more effectively outside of a football stadium.

But back to Friday night, and there is clear evidence that Fir Park stadium was vandalised by Celtic supporters. Read that sentence again, and if it fills you with the anger it fills me with, it’s time to raise your voice louder than the louts.

For months, the arrogance of the Nopyronoparty Ultra Rebelz has been boiling over. A chunk of these ‘fans’ outrageously attempt to excuse what they’re doing by labelling themselves as ‘persecuted’ by the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act, thus making a mockery of the campaign against it.

To be clear, the campaign against the OB Act is about civil rights, it’s not a show of support for vandalism or any other unwelcome acts.

It’s time for a zero tolerance policy on this nonsense. Then we can all get back to the football, the Celtic way.

  9. Has there ever been any other club or indeed the SFA themselves taken such decisive quick action against their own fan base in the manner and numbers we have seen Celtic do today?

A huge and significant victory for the SMSM today, there will be much celebration amongst the hacks tonight.

  10. Ernie Lynch

Don’t try and turn the tables on me, I behave myself at the games, if they have done wrong, then they get papped, simple as that, I hope they don’t relocate any of the bam pots beside me, then again, they will prob. Be saying that too.

  11. Sad Day

It was inevitable that Celtic took action and, in the modern day of PR spin, that it would have to be a quick decision. However, I strongly suspect that there were not as many as 128 people involved in seat ripping or illegal fireworks handling.

Can anyone explain how or why 128 were selected? Are old scores being settled? Would we be so willing to agree to “collateral damage” if we were the innocents seated near the block where the incidents occured?

Delaney’s Dunky gave early reports of the incidents involving his son and friend, I believe. They had written to Motherwell owning up to accidental damage of seats and offering to pay. Are they to be included in the 128? Is that fair? Do you not think that we should attempt to be fair?

I care little if some young men who got out of their heads and acted badly suffer temporary bans. If it is a fair sentence for a proven crime, then there is no issue for me. However, I worry that we are given no information on how or why these 128 were selected.

  12. A sad, sad day for Celtic Football Club

Celtic fans were banned from admission to a football stadium

in 1994, where there crime was ‘breaking seats’ and here we are

20 years on with a section of Celtic fans now banned for our own

    stadium for the same crime.

Or is it the same crime?

A sad, sad day for Celtic Football Club Green Brigade or not, especially

for a club in such great shape.

  13. No doubt the Murderwell bean counters have thrown in any seats in that stand that need replaced.

  14. The GB in their statement admitted that the supporters who broke up seats were in amongst them but were not members of the GB. Can someone tell me. Is there an official membership for the GB? Do those members sign a form? Do they hold membership cards? Pay an annual subscription? What is it that allows someone to claim GB membership?

So in their statement, the GB effectively admitted responsibility and said it would never happen again, while at the same time claiming the vandals weren’t actual members.

By their own admission, it happened in “their area” and in “their watch”. Why did they allow it to happen?

  15. Don’t really think the club can enforce a ban, just buy a ticket for another part of the stadium HH

  16. so celtic have finally acted

but is the banning of 128 a little draconian??

have these people had a chance to defend themselves

    this is very arbitrary

I’ve no doubt that you are a paragon of virtue at all times and would obviously never breach any of the stadium rules.

But you must be aware that there are those who do use foul and abusive language.

Would you agree that such people should be banned from the stadium?

  18. I’m sorry for the GBers who don’t set off smoke bombs.

I’m sorry for the GBers who don’t break seats.

I’m sorry for the GBers who don’t feel the need to bring Bobby Sands banners to football matches to prove their Irish identity.

I’m sorry for the rest of the supporters who will now need to sit through games in relative silence.

As for the 128? If they haven’t done anything wrong they’ll have the opportunity to present their case and I expect some to be allowed back.

What the Club have done today was sad but inevitable. And we can’t go blaming the MSM or faulty seat design this time.

Now THAT is a very good point……I recall being enraged at the time(s) ……. Though NOTHING IN THE MEDIA ABOUT IT ………Having said that, the GB were given plenty of opportunities to ensure their behaviour enhanced the Club’s reputation, and Friday night was NOT GOOD …….. our gutter media are having a field day, eh ….fodder for the bigots!!!!

  20. The club has been itching to do this for a long long time. The Green Brigade have sleepwalked into this one , the club has taken their opportunity to crush the Green Brigade under the convenient banner of the Friday night vandalism.

As a club we have punished 378 individuals for the actions of …. 30 /40/50/ …………. I think this is usually referred to as a small minority.

The Green Brigade overstepped the mark on a few occasions.

I expected Celtic to use a sledgehammer to break that nut …

The sequence of events allowed the club to use a wrecking ball

    The purge is complete .

  21. Suspending 128 and relocating 250?

What a remarkably speedy identification exercise Celtic have carried out. Surely Our Board are not over-reacting? One could almost believe they already had a strategy planned.

    JJ

Do not, for one second, see this post as support for whoever were the real culprits on Friday.

  22. Celtic response to Friday is absolutely draconian. 378 fans punished for the actions of a couple of dozen at most.

    Yes.

Which is why I’m asking for people who break the stadium rules to be banned rather than prosecuted.

The rules are quite clear. There’s no need for anyone to break them. If people chose to break them then they can have no complaint when the rules are enforced.

Bit of a weak ‘argument’ ….. not your usual standard…

  27. WG

SFTB is right about the venue, but it’s a six pm kick-off local time. It’s free to get in. The Mini Estadi is adjacent to the big stadium. It’s a kind of posh, Catalan Lesser Hampden. Lesser Hampden needs a new name.

  28. I’m puzzled.

PL always quick to condemn our fans but never quick to tackle the SFA & their corruption.

Why is that can anyone answer that ?

I would like to see an outline of the timescale proposed for those hearings. How do you go about proving you are not guilty?

We will soon see if the “no grassing” principle holds up as some “hangers on” were obviously there under the names of GB members who had tickets sold to them but who did not go to the game.
