Sunshine amid murky football shadows

771

Before we get down to less important matters, let me know, did you buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?

There are so many reasons to be cynical about football people (players, directors and fans alike) in the modern era it is scarcely worth listing them but occasionally a pillar of strength comes along and changes all the rules.

This morning’s headlines that Georgios Samaras has attracted interest from an English slumbering giant is reason enough to highlight the dedication of this model professional.  Georgios arrived at Celtic on loan in January 2008 and was instrumental in the historic league win that year.  When he completed his permanent transfer from Manchester City he took an enormous cut in wages because he wanted to be a Celtic player.

Thanks for the great support for the CQN Annual. You can order online here, time is running out for shipping before Christmas!

His talent and effectiveness has meandered, a bit like those looping runs he would go on with the ball, since then and for a while he was subject to considerable abuse from ‘supporters’.  At one point he had the chance to leave but his message to Celtic was simple, ‘If you want me to stay, I’ll stay and fight for my place.  This is my club’.

The story of the rebirth of Celtic is also the story of the rebirth of Georgios Samaras.  He is the epitome of the modern footballer: strong, skilful and intelligent, he would get into any top squad in Europe.

There is no chance of him going to England, Celtic will not sell him and even if they accepted a bid, the player shows no inclination of wanting to leave.  He is currently prime candidate for Player of the Year and is our most feared player in the Champions League.

You have six days to buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in support of Celtic Charity and Teenage Cancer.  This is what we’re all about, don’t talk to me about football until I hear from you on the subject that really matters.

About a year ago a “supporter” next to us (section 117) bellowed “I despise you Samaras”. To howls of laughter my family now mockingly shout this at the television especially during European away games.

  6. KevJungle – I believe Duvall met Jinky while making the film “a shot at glory”, which also starred one ally mccoist as an ex-Celtic striker.

    Nae bother,bud.

I like how the new name can be done in shorthand too!

  10. Going through this morning’s papers and find it disturbing that John Greechan of the Daily Mail has chosen to contact a former ref (Hugh Dallas), who was sacked by the SFA for sending an e-mail which was deeply offensive to the Catholic community in Scotland and an incitement for anti-Catholic sectarianism

    Shame on him

  11. If I recall, sevconians had Duvall holding up a dodgy scarf outside ipox..he hadn’t a Scooby what was going on.

    Cracker! :)

  14. Interesting night-timedebate about what kind of goals return you can expect from a left sided, forward-minded player.

I don;t think a distinction between midfielder and centre forward is that useful. Some teams play a clear 4:3:3 type of set up (Barca, Liverpool) while some are closer to 4:5:1 (or 4:6:0)

I don’t think Sammi forms a part of a 4:3:3 so maybe his goal return expectations should be lessened in line with this.

Anyway , some random examples from season 2011/12

    Man U

Valencia- 22(5) appearances- 4 league goals

    Nani- 24 (5)- 8 league goals

Ashley Young- 19(6)- 6 league goals

    Man. City

Milner 39 appearances (in all comps)- 2 goals (in all comps)

    Adam Johnson- 25 apps. – 11 goals

    Samir Nasri- 25 & 2

    David Silva- 26 & 9

All my figures seem to prove is that we are not comparing like with like.

Some of these players will play in outfits where they are supplying to 2 Centre forwards.

Some are clearly wingers and not forwards.

Some, like Johnson, played most of their games in lower level comps (League Cup, Europa)

Maybe we should just rejoice in having someone who is competent, but frustrating at SPL level, who also manages to excel at CL European level. So many opposing coaches in Europe have singled out Wanyama & Sammi as our outstanding outfield players in this campaign.

Harry Redknapp singled Sammi out in one of our pre-season tournaments, where he was a studio pundit, as a highly talented player.

The debate may not be resolved by my observations but I think we can find the truth lying somewhere between “He’s a heartless haddie” and “He’s our Lionel Messi”

  15. Morning all. Very, very cold here in North Ayrshire.

Has any knowledgeable CNQer explained the implications for sevco of the “67” (you couldn’t make that up, could you?)? Imagine thon died-in-the-(blue)wool Lafferty taking issue with them. You couldn’t make this up. Let’s hope there’s plenty more to come. Fraser Wishart must be as sick as a pig.

A wee note to the presenters on clyde ssb-

Try asking one of the hun callers if Fergus never saved Celtic from administration and slipped into liquidation with a new entity forming, would they be happy (the hun) to credit the new entity with being the first British club to win the Big One?
