Sunshine amid murky football shadows

771

Before we get down to less important matters, let me know, did you buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?

There are so many reasons to be cynical about football people (players, directors and fans alike) in the modern era it is scarcely worth listing them but occasionally a pillar of strength comes along and changes all the rules.

This morning’s headlines that Georgios Samaras has attracted interest from an English slumbering giant is reason enough to highlight the dedication of this model professional.  Georgios arrived at Celtic on loan in January 2008 and was instrumental in the historic league win that year.  When he completed his permanent transfer from Manchester City he took an enormous cut in wages because he wanted to be a Celtic player.

Thanks for the great support for the CQN Annual. You can order online here, time is running out for shipping before Christmas!

His talent and effectiveness has meandered, a bit like those looping runs he would go on with the ball, since then and for a while he was subject to considerable abuse from ‘supporters’.  At one point he had the chance to leave but his message to Celtic was simple, ‘If you want me to stay, I’ll stay and fight for my place.  This is my club’.

The story of the rebirth of Celtic is also the story of the rebirth of Georgios Samaras.  He is the epitome of the modern footballer: strong, skilful and intelligent, he would get into any top squad in Europe.

There is no chance of him going to England, Celtic will not sell him and even if they accepted a bid, the player shows no inclination of wanting to leave.  He is currently prime candidate for Player of the Year and is our most feared player in the Champions League.

You have six days to buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in support of Celtic Charity and Teenage Cancer.  This is what we’re all about, don’t talk to me about football until I hear from you on the subject that really matters.

    I see 67 oldco players have submitted a constructive dismissal claim to the Employment Tribunal against Chuckie Verde. 67 Players? No wonder they ran so much debt up with that size of a squad.

    On Patrick Moore he might have been a right wing Little Englander but he hated secterianism.

    In 1965, he was appointed director of the newly-constructed Armagh Planetarium in Northern Ireland, a post he held until 1968. His stay outside England was short partly because of the beginning of The Troubles, a dispute Moore wanted no part of. He was appointed Armagh County secretary for the Scout movement, but resigned after he was told Catholics could not be admitted – from Wiki

    He has been outstanding, take off those Sammy blinkers you are wearing

    So he has been better than Henke’s 54 Goals Season

    He was not exactly outstanding against Benfica in Portugal now was he?

    Even he admitted after the match that by his standards he had a poor match

    doesnt even make you a good supported never mind a better supporter, so what you’ve been going to games for a long time to bleat about players you dont like, big deal means nothing, you got some shares again big deal, means nothing certainly does not mean your any better than anyone else.

    As for taking my Sammi goggles off, naw I’ve been arguing with blinkered Sammi haters on here since he arrived and people are begining to see what I meant.

    Your blind hatred of the mhan is very very sad. Its something you have to deal with, coming on here and decrying the mhan when his contribution is being recognised and praised is simply bitterness, if you’ve nothing good to say about him say nothing, its only common decency, then again when your so bitter I dont expect any change so, next

    At least according to the clips available……

    I agree with you that as a striker,he has been largely poor since his injury early-season a few years back,but surely it is to his credit-and that of Neil Lennon-that he has found a valuable role in the team?

    Chris Sutton didnae score a huge amount of goals,yet Henrik rated him his best-ever partner.

    Come to that,Kevin Davies doesn’t score too often for Bolton,so Owen Coyle dropped him and they got relegated!

    Disturbing news for anyone interested in an open,free internet.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~
    Dear Avaazers,
    Authoritarian regimes are pushing for governmental control over the internet in a binding global treaty. If they succeed, the internet could become less open, more costly and much slower. We’ve stopped threats like this before, and we can again — but only with a massive global outcry. Sign the petition and share with everyone you know:
    Right now at a UN meeting in Dubai, authoritarian regimes are pushing for full governmental control of the Internet in a binding global treaty — if they succeed, the internet could become less open, more costly and much slower. We have only 2 days to stop them.
    The Internet has been an amazing example of people power — allowing us to connect, speak out and pressure leaders like never before. That’s largely because it’s been governed to date by users and non-profits and not governments. But now countries like Russia, China and United Arab Emirates are trying to rewrite a major telecom treaty called the ITR to bring the Internet under its control — the web would then be shaped by government interests and not by us, the users. Tim Berners Lee, one of the “fathers of the Internet,” has warned that this could increase censorship online and invade our privacy. But if we object with a massive people-powered petition, we can strengthen the hand of countries fighting this power grab.
    We have stopped attacks like this before and can do it again before the treaty text is locked this week. A wave of opposition to a new ITR is already building — sign the petition to tell governments hands off our Internet! and then forward this email to everyone you know — when we hit 1 million signers, it’ll be delivered straight to the delegates at this cozy meeting:
    http://www.avaaz.org/en/hands_off_our_internet_i/?bPrXpcb&v=20029
    The meeting to update the ITR (International Telecommunication Regulations) is being convened by a UN body called the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Normally, it wouldn’t merit much attention, but Russia, China, Saudi Arabia and others are trying to use the meeting to increase government control of the Internet through proposals that would allow for access to be cut off more easily, threaten privacy, legitimize monitoring and traffic-blocking, and introduce new fees to access content online.
    At the moment, our Internet has no central regulatory body, but various non-profit organisations work together to manage different technological, commercial and political interests to allow the Internet to run. The current model is certainly not without its flaws. US dominance and corporate influence highlight the need for reform, but changes should not be dictated from an opaque governments-only treaty body. They should emerge from an open and transparent, people-powered process — putting the interests of us users in the center.
    The ITU does extremely important work — expanding affordable access for poor countries and securing networks — but it’s not the right place to make changes to how the Internet operates. Let’s ensure that our Internet stays free and governed by the public and show the ITU and the world that we won’t stay silent in the face of this Internet attack. Click below to sign and then share this email widely:
    http://www.avaaz.org/en/hands_off_our_internet_i/?bPrXpcb&v=20029
    Avaaz members have come together before to save the free web — and won. More than 3 million of us demanded the US kill a bill that would have given the government the right to shut down any website, helping push the White House to drop its support. In the EU, the European Parliament responded after 2.8 million of us called on them to drop ACTA, another threat to the free net. Together, now we can do it again.
    With hope,
    Pascal, Ian, Paul, Luca, Caroline, Ricken, Kya and the rest of the Avaaz team
    Despite all the technological advances, the TV view is the same as it was years ago.
    no surprises there then, I dont subscribe to your argument at all, in fact its childish, you have simply chose a side and jumped into the discussion because you want an argument.
    Sammi has been one of the best players over the last 5 years IMO, in or out of position his control and distribution has been second to none, his willingness to make himself available in the face of the vitriol and scorn poured on him from the stands has shown him to be probably one of the bravest players to pull on the jersey.
