Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

  1. We’ll sing you a song, a soldiers song

    With cheering rousing chorus

As round our blazing fires we throng

    The starry heavens o’er us

    Impatient for the coming fight

And as we wait the morning light

Here in the silence of the night

    We’ll chant a SOLDIER SONG!

  13. Won’t be at the game today would love to be there but health and a promise to myself regarding the huns stop me from going, The promise I made to myself was ( never go to a watch Celtic game that’s against That lot from Ibrox ever again) I’ve kept my word so far, my decision came at Ibrox when they had a referee called THE REVEREND Mick Curry referee a game against us, I think We had 9 players booked for menial offences, disgraceful refereeing from a reverend referee who should hold his head in shame forever more.

The other reason is my health, I’ll have to get fit for Lisbon, so keeping myself working in that vein right now. I don’t want to miss that week.

  16. Don’t know what the score will be today, it I did I’d be a rich man. I fear it will be closer than many think, although I hope I’m wrong, totally wrong.

Murty is just a patsy, make no mistake. The tactics and team talk will be pure W Myth. They will try and get an early goal, hoping for our occasional slowness off the blocks, even if they don’t succeed the bus will be firmly parked for the remainder of the game. It’s damage limitation time. Then in last 10mins it will be over to brother Madman.

Well Brendan just have something to say about that.

Same as yourself, I won’t be there either, made a promise too and sticking to it, all who are going enjoy yourself, and be careful, bring back a result,.

    Police message to all spectators

In the interests of public safety, Sevco fans will be held inside the ground for 30 minutes after the whistle. However if Celtic score a third goal gala, gates at the sevco end will be opened immediately to allow supporters to do walking away.

I said at the time that McCurry was either incompetent or a cheat. In which case he needed to chuck either the Saturday job or the Sunday one.

  25. WINNING CAPTAINS on 12TH MARCH 2017 10:07 AM

We’re a far better team when Rogic is playing 1) because he’s a fabulous player and 2) because it allows Armstrong to play 1 further back making our midfield much more dynamic. If he is nearing fitness that is great news but I wouldn’t rush him back.

I’m a little weary about the overconfidence today, Rangers 2012 are pish no doubt, but if teams like Thistle and Hamilton can leave with narrow defeats then they should be capable of doing so to.
