Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

I reckon we joined this blog at roughly the same time. For me,Jan 2009.

The fix was in. Some of us knew some things, all of us strongly suspected everything. PAUL67 gave us a vehicle to pull it all together.

By the time RTC came along, this site had already revealed the imminent death of the hun, some wonderful posters had put the knife in.

    Barcabhoy,for one.

And the huns went bust. Funnoooooot. Aw ya dancer.

So we just waited for the rotten fruit of cheated titles to fall into our lap.

Put our faith in justice,we did. As we have done all our lives.

Is it right to put your faith in justice? Does that mean that you accept that a tiny wee select committee know better?

Does it mean that you realise that the tiny wee select committee know more than you do?

I actually thought that the huns were f’d around 2007,and told my hun mates in Kilwinning.

They then won three in a row.

They know now. It’s rotten fruit. For all my mates back home,Rangers daft as they are, they honestly can’t talk about their team in the pub.

    Think about that.

Pardon me for butting in….I saw you mention the name ‘Sconie’ above. Would he be the same Sconie who at one time posted on OFFforum, and/ or old BBC old firm forum back when they still had that up and running ?

Morning Bhoys from a very damp Central Scotland I expect todays Glasgow Derby to be a wee bit harder than the last one as the Rangers players will be out to put a show on for there new boss,However, the gulf for me is to great for them to bridge and the hoops will win 2-0. H.H.

Simply because they will have something to prove to their new manager is will get wired in in a manner they didn’t under Warbs.

Spoke to two Feyenoord fans in town last night. They flew over from Dusseldorf with five Dortmund fans. Encouraging to hear them say this game at CP has an atmosphere like nowhere else in Europe, rivalled only in Istanbul.

The guys were fairly knowledgeable about the RFC 1872 scandal.

A fascinating conversation away from football when they spoke of WW2 and how their town Venlo, on the German border, was partially flattened by Lancaster bombers dropping their load too early. This was tragically in the last few days of war and many families were wiped out needlessly. I was also unaware of ongoing German reparations to the Dutch. To this day, some families who lost relatives in the camps are given free rail passes by German authorities to visit appropriate camps, in Joop’s case, Sachsenhausen, where his grandfather ended up.

Being in their mid sixties I had an idea they’d have been in Milan 70. They got the train down with another 20k fans knowing Feyenoord were underdogs but their main tactics, apart from drowning out the Celtic fans with their horns, were marking ‘de vlo’ (Jinky) out the game, and getting Van Hanegem on the ball. Their affinity with us grew from Feyenoord’s greatest day.

  20. UP LIKE A BIRD @ 2:54 AM,

“Maybe people look at a football club as being an alternative to a real Human relationship……”

    Very articulate and heart-felt post.

We can of course get caught up in “pastimes”, see them as being more important than they really are. Paul67 done a good piece in regard to Football sometime back.

We have to say… What is real? What is our priorities?

Since Roman times the Establishment have known the importance of Bread and Circuses to appease the masses.

I believe it was MacJay who posted during THAT Barca comeback that Nations are corrupt and it WILL be reflected in Football.

Of course with the prestige and money involved in Football now, he is quite right.

Which is a great shame. The Sporting Ideal was one of honest toil and Football was born out-of the Corinthian Spirit – This no longer applies.

Still my Club, Celtic are striving to incorporate or even to emulate the Spirit of our Founders. It is a special Club who, I believe, has been run in a Prudent, Diligent and Shrewd manner, certainly since it was restructured.

The way the Football Establishment, Other Clubs and the attitude of Players, Officials and Fans, sully the “Beautiful” game is obviously hugely disappointing.

But the fact is my Club has found an alternative way not only to survive but to thrive in this environment doing things “The Glasgow Celtic Way”. It makes me proud and believe it or not… hopeful.

‘Cause I know where a Football Match lies in life’s priorities… I choose my Bread, I choose my Circuses… (Outwith Football I watch less than one hour of TV a week and listen to less than one hour of Radio a week.)

Yet I’ll watch the Game today, not sure with how many friends will be there (could be dozens) but a least two I’ve already arranged to meet. They are great and close friends of mine, I hope our friendships will be life long.

We have many things in common but we got to know each other through just one… Our Love of Glasgow Celtic.

These are real Human Relationships and will not be tarnished but strengthened through the knowledge that what we are up against is “Bent”…

    Hail Hail

  21. I won’t be watching the game live as I get toooo excited.
