Sydney, Newco and the £10m liability

294

Not all contracts are fulfilled.  Usually, the failure is caused by an underperformance, less often, by one party wilfully reneging on their obligations.

Newco’s fans, and other fans, have bought tickets for games at the Ange Coming Home Tour that will not happen, leaving the promoters with an obligation to refund money.  Money paid for promotional events has been wasted, as has costs sunk into the setup.  Perhaps only the lawyers’ fees were not wasted.

Contracts have been concluded with Celtic, at a sum more than twice as high as Newco’s, agreements are in place with other clubs too.  The promoters need to fulfil those contracts – in Celtic’s case, the deal is not dependent on Newco attending.   Celtic contracted to play the tournament without mention of any other club.  The promoters have a £6m liability to Celtic and doubtlessly a few million to other clubs, venues and elsewhere.

If you detect some frustration from the promoters in response to Newco’s unilateral withdrawal from the Ange tour, it is not difficult to imagine why.  They will now attempt to line-up an alternative attendee that allows them to sell the tickets and the TV rights necessary to keep the project afloat.

Now that other clubs know Celtic bid the price up to £6m, the promoters are unlikely to find a suitable draw who are as disparate as Newco and to accept the first offer of £2.5m.  Any substitute club capable of selling the required volume of tickets will demand parity with Celtic.  That’s a bitter £3.5m pill to swallow.

I expect they are looking at a £10m liability if the project fails to go ahead.  The costs of starting again with another club are likely to be £5m more than the promoters initially budgeted.  These tours always carry a commercial risk for the promoters, but no one ever makes this kind of money.  The project is underwater.

Today the promoters will be running various scenarios.  I expect they will try to get a big English club to step in.  Either way, they will tally up the costs and get the lawyers on the phone.  The £2.5m fee Newco will not now collect, is only the first phase of their exposure.

Newco made a mistake in signing the initial contract.  Without wanting to be petty here, they are a newer corporate structure than Celtic, with less experience and expertise.  They cannot be expected to be as accomplished as more experienced clubs.

Neither sets of fans wanted the game, but in bowing the pressure, Newco exposed themselves to far greater risks.  Sometimes you need to take an unpopular stance for the good of the club, even if you were the one who made the initial mistake.  Fans never say, “Indulge our demands and expose the club to a £10m liability that could do longterm harm to our strategic aims”, but scenarios like this are played out by angry mobs everywhere.

Despite the unpopularity of the game, Celtic had an easy decision to make.  We still do not know if we will get Champions League money next season, but the Ange Tour money will cover the fee being asked for, for one of our top signing priorities.  As I mentioned, sometimes you need to take an unpopular stance for the good of the club.  Insert our own “Indulge our demands… strategic aims” quote here.

Newco apparently briefed that one of their objections to the tour was that the phrase “Old Firm” would not be used.  I know this subject has been covered at several AGMs, on here and other places many times – but some people live to wind up Celtic fans.  Through copywrite, Celtic and Newco have a legal veto over the commercialisation of the phase “Old Firm”.

If you have any connection to football, you know this is because Celtic moved to kill the phrase in any commercial sense.  If, when this tour was announced, you used this copywrite to claim the exact opposite, that Celtic cherish that phrase and status, you need to take a good look at yourself in the mirror.  What are you trying to do to Celtic fans, what are you trying to do to the club?

For the watching CSC.

  1. My mate took his mum, who’s in her 60s, to her first game ever recently- Ross County game. He said she loved it but on Mother’s Day after a few drinks was saying how the “songs” really get to you at the game. Said she knows their bad but they really got to her. She then said she wished his dad/her husband wasn’t “one of them” 😂😂

  2. Roofe doesn’t play striker for them, they’re massively dependent on fatty. He also struggles to play one game a week never mind 3 in 8 days

They might get by without Morelos in Sunday but they need to beat us 3 times in April with the games stacking up.

Ange said recently he prepares his squads to peak physically for the run in. When we revisit key moments at the end of the season rotating the squad and subbing players to give them a bit of rest won’t get much attention (and certainly not as much as it did at the time). but right now it’s looking like it’s going to be crucial.

It could be luck but Ange does seem to have a plan for these things and stick to it

If you want rid of the OldFirm virus then sack Celtic PLC.

Replace the executive with a working class, socialist executive, no millionaires, or, billionaires, as they are just out of kilter with what should be Celtic’s DNA.

If Hearts FC supporters can run HFC off of season ticket money, and player sales, then why can’t Celtic supporters do the same??

Nobody from the CST who allowed themselves to be mugged by David Lowe, or, the utterly useless CSA, should be anywhere near the new executive because they’ve all sucked up the corruption since 2012, so that means that in all likelihood, these proven Celtic supporting failures have to be blocked from any controlling positions.

Not a single executive member should be retained, and as you are no longer viewed as supporters, but customers, ©Fergus McCann, do you think that buying any product from this pathetic executive, will in any way alter Celtic FC’s image as a seriously corrupt entity??

For example, if it now turns out that RFC have financial worries because of the Australia palaver, and now desperately need the £40 million CL money next year, do you think that RFC’s OldFirm partners won’t oblige with the gift of another title??

    How would that come about??

Well Celtic PLC would have to manufacture a collapse, like last season, when every function at the club collapsed, all at the same time, immediately after RFC released the alarming news on Oct/Nov 2020 that they’d need £11 million to see out the rest of the season, and right on cue, Celtic played rubbish for the remainder of the season.

    Imagine that.

Well, you don’t need to imagine it, you all saw it.

Unless you would now rather deny what you saw??

Even big Shane Duffy let the cat out of the bag when he said….

“Its been a difficult time at the club, especially with the crazy goings on behind the scenes.”

    What crazy goings on??

    Yeah I get you Shane.

    We’ve seen this movie before, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2021.

My guess is that if RFC do indeed need financial assistance, or they’ll go bust, then Ange will play the part of, Dominic McKay, he’ll be disappeared, and this seasons title 2022 will also be sacrificed by Celtic PLC, to keep the OldFirm alive.

  17. The game that never was in Oz.

A daft idea in the first place, now happily confined to the bin, more importantly a lesson to the Celtic board never to play ball with Scotland’s newest football club. This current version obviously has to be seen to be more staunch than the old one they let die and they’re merely playing their tuped over, orange card.

Celtic should suggest Partick Thistle or Queens Park as replacements in the only Glasgow derby with history, the way is now open to make Ange’s home coming a proper party free from the stench of Scotlands shame. Rainjurz aren’t just playing possum, Celtic supporters along with the liquidator called time on them in 2012, shame on the board for trying to make money from a continuity myth propagated in dear wee Scotland.

  18. We have people in political power in Scotland who want to force their views down the throats of the population, whether they like it, or, not.

Re-writing Glasgow’s history by changing street-names and pulling down statues. Introducing draconian trans-gender laws and encouraging explicit sex lessons & modern sexual practice illustrations into schools, targeted at children from seven years upwards. Plastering hospitals, police stations, fire stations, emergency vehicles, train stations and all things ‘cooncil’ with unneeded & unwanted Gaelic livery – a language on life-support for hundreds of years, that less than 1% of the population can understand, or, speak.

The same people who can’t open a hospital for kids on time(seven years late), or, organise the building of two wee boats vital to livelihoods on our island communities(5 years late). People who don’t have the great responsibility to raise the money they spend, and spend it like they were ‘dishing-out’ party funds. An administration where there is no distinction between party and government – where the head of government and head of party are husband and wife. A carbon copy of the disgraced & toppled Ceaușescu’s Romanian dictatorship.

Forget about changing the past for politically correct cosmetic reasons – let’s change the present and the future by kicking these Nat comedians out of office.
