Systems more important than the manager

297

Getting rid of the last guy is always the easy part.  It is the day later, when your mind turns to appointing a successor, that your worries really start.  The great problem with managers is that their careers do not proceed with success or failure evident in a linear manner.

The guy sitting joint second in England with a provincial Midlands club was sacked five years ago by Liverpool, who are adrift in sixth, despite having a genuine top tier manager.  Davie Moyes reputation was fixed as one of the English game’s tired old options before he got a chance to return to West Ham and has them in a Champions League spot.

Mourinho is the classic example.  Champions League winner with two clubs but he presides over the descent of Tottenham.  Guardiola needs all the money in the world to keep Man City ahead of Leicester and still awaits a Champions League since parting with his Argentinian Midas.  I enjoy watching City but Pep’s eight years there and at Bayern failed to deliver the trophy both clubs wanted.

All you really know about a manager with an impeccable record of improving players and teams is that his form will soon decline; they all do.

Systems bring sustained success in football.  Deeply embedded, appropriately resourced and continually reviewed systems: recruitment, development and coaching systems in particular.  Get this right and even Klopp would be able to push Liverpool above sixth.

I know the huns can only beat who they are drawn against but the standard of opposition they have faced has been criminal in Europe this season.

Better oil the revolving door …. it’s all in front of us just need to make some key decisions and things can turn quickly or else a 3 year slog

    Exactly!

  5. There has been much speculation on here about Martinez and Maloney as possible candidates for our Manger’s job. Someone mentioned that while they were managing one of the best teams in the world, they may not have what is required to manage a league team.

One thing I am am almost certain about is their man management skills. As someone who spent four years at the Catholic University of Louvain (as then known) I can assure you that one has to be very careful about the linguistic division in that country, In my time there we had large scale riots about the linguistic problem. Today the ancient University dating from the 15th century has been divided into two linguistic ones, the Flemish one staying in the old buildings and city and the French speakers moving to a new one in the linguistic area of the Wallonia. The French speakers and Flemish are very clear about where the languages are spoken. I have often wondered what language is spoken during the cut and thrust of games.

The two gentlemen in question would have to take all this on board and use their skills to keep things moving in a very friendly manner for all concerned. I think this would call for great efforts on their part and perhaps needed to be on their toes more than would even be required in the disjointed situation at Celtic Park and Lennoxtown. But I have no knowledge of their ability to put a team out with good tactical skills other than to see that it seems to work for Belgium. In the end, they may not be what our wonderful Board have in mind. Perhaps they would cost too much for a start.

To be fair, the Belgian league is probably better than ours. Antwerp certainly aren’t world beaters but I don’t think they’d lose 8-2 on aggregate to Sparta Prague either.

We need to get our own house in order before we worry about the other mob. The rest will come.

  8. I know my Michael O’Neill suggestion has died a death and so will my next one. Mick McCarthy and Damian Duff (although I think Damian just wants to stay in Ireland anyway).

I see a pattern emerging here – I certainly wouldn’t expect Mick McCarthy turning up as manager.

We need a manager who is comfortable with having to win almost every domestic game.

  10. 2nd of covid 5 , now on thems pitch , what happened to the SFA 7 match ban , they are taking the p*** now.

I agree will no doubt be better than ours but they are poor.

  12. RC that is exactly what they are doing. It is the ibrox way. Cheats then. Cheats now. Cheats forever.

I’m sure wee nippy will praise them for rehabilitating the offenders so quickly.

I hope they draw a half decent team in the next round. They deserve a horsing.

I wouldn’t want McCarthy either but give him his due – he’s also won the championship twice with two different clubs – a league considerably stronger than ours.

I see the new huns are cruising into the last 16 for the 2nd year in a row having started in early qualifying.

How many times haven’t Celtic achieved knockout wins since the much heralded Lawwell became CEO 17 years ago? Zilch. Nada.

Big success that guy. Worth every last penny. Really going to miss him.

  15. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

PS the huns have built a team to win football matches. We’ve built a business to sell players for profit and to provide capital returns to rich shareholders.

That’s what we are now. A vehicle for capitalists. Still we have the clappers taking a bullet for our ‘well run club’.

    Do me a favour.

  16. GENE on 25TH FEBRUARY 2021 7:46 PM

Very true but he did good work at Ipswich and has turned Cardiff around.

I’m not beating the drum for him or anything and as I say, not sure I’d want him at Celtic but he’s a decent manager and probably deserves more respect than he gets.

Sorry Gene, I am just trying to be realistic as well as suggest names that I think have a proven track record. I did here a few names today from fellow Celts locally and Dan Petrescu was one that they were excited by (I don’t know if he would come / is good enough / can be afforded etc).

  18. GeeBee, Gene,

McCarthy is who we should have gone for earlier in the season as an interim, but at the point we’re at, we need someone more forward thinking. I like him – he’s done well with Ireland and the Championship is clearly his forte – but not for me at this point in time.

  19. Petrescu seems to have something about him but seems a bit of a journeyman. He’s on his 16th job already and he’s only 53.

Not someone to go for if you need a bit of stability.

  20. As strikers/forwards get goal scoring and assist bonuses – Defenders should get bonus for headed clearance and blocks. Players need recognition and reward for motivation EVEN IF its their job.

I’m looking forward to a coach who has certainty in what he does – we don’t need someone trying to figure it out!

Experience , Hunger, Standards and the attraction factor – a guy players enjoy playing for!
