I really don’t care if journalists stick a microphone in Dermot Desmond’s face and ask him questions about tax, Dermot is big and bad enough to look after himself, the letter he issued to BBC’s Mark Daly confirms as much. What troubles me is the inordinate double standards employed by the Scottish media.
Graeme Souness and Walter Smith were recipients of an aggressive tax avoidance scheme, funded by Rangers before their liquidation, while employed as managers of clubs in England. Why are they not subjected to the microphone treatment when they walk into football stadiums, as they do every week?
Unlike anything Dermot has been asked about (no one disputes the legality of Dermot’s arrangement), the Rangers scheme was found in court to be in contravention of tax law.
Why Souness and Smith were in receipt of money from Rangers, while they were employed elsewhere, is a question studiously avoided by their many friends in the media. It is not just these two. More than 50 Rangers players received payments through the same mechanism, all struck down in court. Not a week goes by without some of these former players or managers making media appearances, several sit down with the very people who deemed want to talk about Dermot Desmond this week. None are called to account for their struck-down tax arrangements in the way Dermot was for his (legal) arrangements.
I feel we are in the territory of SNP’s Christine Grahame here. Celtic do nothing wrong so change the frame of reference to allow you to tangentially include Celtic. Then screaming “Celtic” and “tax” all over the front page for an issue that involves one of our shareholders, but has nothing to do with the club. It is sloppy, but unlike Ms Grahame’s intervention, no innocents will be locked up this time.

I tried to respond to your post and other posts other night but CQN didnt accept my password what I was going to say that Before we played Ajax, we visited Feyenord the day before when they were training and we spoke to all the players including Van Hanegen and to a man they wanted Celtic to win v Ajax. We then had a great night aftwr game wirh yourself and bro and others. Special night despite result. KTF

Your dad was in the classic ‘faithful’ mould.
Handled so many years in the doldrums, puncuated by the ecstacy of Empire Exhibition, VE Cup, Coronation Cup and Hampden in the Sun. Not forgetting the 54 double!
Thomsons (x3), McGrory, McDonald, Tully, Evans, Fernie and Peacock… The Lions, Danny , Kenny Paul McStay, Lubo and Henrik…
He was fully aware of the first 6 in a row and the tales of the 62 undefeated, his da’ and uncles whetted his appetite.
Meeting your gorgeous mum helped him forget (almost) the all the trials and tribulations of The 5 Sorrowful Mysteries.
His reward was his wonderful children and Lisbon and a hundred wee personal moments and memories of his heroes, playing in the mud and the wind, but mostly in the wonderful Paradise sunshine…and under those towering floodlights!
We will say all say Adieu to a Fine , Fine Celt on Friday… we will never forget him!

Condolences on the loss of your dad. We’ve never met but hearing about his passing made me think about how lucky I was.
Your story is similar to mine. My first time in Paradise was when we brought the big cup back. I was 2 and can’t remember much if anything about it. But thanks to my dad I was there and was part of it.
He also loved Willie Fernie and went on to love many others with Lubo up there as one of his latter favourites.
The difference in our stories is that I still get to sit beside my dad every home game. He is almost 80 and never misses a game, even when I can’t make it. He gets the train or bus, goes to St Michael’s for the vigil and gets himself home.
I can’t pretend to understand what you’re feeling at the moment, but I’m dreading the day when I might have to sit at Paradise without my dad beside me. He was/is my inspiration for all things Celtic and lots of other things in life as I’m sure your dad was to you.
I just don’t tell him that often enough, although I guess he knows.
I don’t pray as much as I should but my next one will be for you, your dad and your family.

We are the same age. My late father took my cousin to see the European cup celebrations in Paradise on 26/5/1967. I was a week short of my 2nd birthday. My mammy and I never really forgave him for saying I was too young to take. :)

My sincere condolences on your sad loss it is a tough time no matter what age.
My own Dads birthday would be on Saturday he was born 11/11/1911 , And passed on 26 years ago he came over from Donegal in the 30,s and worked on farms all his life other than having a drink he had no hobbies and worked 7 days a week he never saw Celtic till after he retired but all 5 of his sons were Celtic daft. He told me tales of working in rough places sleeping in barns on straw beds and no running water,and we think we had it rough ,I recently had my loft insulated and while emptying the attic found a shoe box with all his Mass cards and condolences from a lot of people ,it was a comfort to read them and see how well thought of my old man was he had over 600 hundred people at his funeral not bad for a farm labourer who treated people kindly all his life. So glad I was there despite the fact I cant really remember.
My old man was good at that though. Took me to see his idol, Perry Como, at the Kelvin Hall when I was 9.
Most of my mates think that was cruel lol, but me, as I get older and appreciate how good Perry Como was in his day, I’m glad I was there.

Attended the Scottish Football Supporters Association session at Firhill to present the findings of the survey completed by over 16,000 fans – http://www.scottishfsa.org . I heard it was discussed on BBC Scotland phone-in where Broadfoot seems to have tried to dismiss is as irrelevant.
Can anyone tell whether there has been any comment on the survey on CQN tonight? Thanks.

It hasn’t. Broadfoot did try to dismiss it and McIntyre got to the it was mostly Celtic supporters that voted and they have an agenda before the discussion ended.
Talking of ‘out of the mouths of babies’… I opened the £1200 extra sliding roof on the new car to let my 4 year old grandaughter see the plane landing overhead at Prestwick airport better only to be asked ‘Papa,when are you going to get a proper roof for your car like we have?’

Jock is her favourite ever man. She still says that. He took her team fae the 40s 50s and early 60s to the top in Europe. The fact we won the European Cup on the feast of Corpus Christi, her parish, was special to her forever.
