Technical review needed after Real game

882

The trip to the US to play Real Madrid is core to strategy for Celtic right now.  It allowed the significant North American support an easier opportunity to see the team, keeps the club’s profile high among the game movers and shakers and will have contributed valuable financial resources.

You know there’s a ‘but’ coming, don’t you.

Gary Hooper, Anthony Stokes and Daryl Murphy all picked up or aggravated strains on the trip.  The players are still stepping up their fitness regimes.  Muscles are being stressed, then rested, then stresses a little further.  Returning from two lengthy flights with a high incidence of non-contact injuries suggests we need to review how we prepare athletes for travel.

Do you like the new-look Celtic Quick News?  Some fundamental changes have engineered into the back-end which should make things more solid going forward.  More new features will come on-stream shortly.  My enormous thanks to Kev, who designed the template and everything new in the engine room.

Don’t forget, if you have an article in you for CQN Magazine email me: articles@cqnmagazine.co.uk and let me know what you would like to write about. I’ll be able to give you some pointers. Next edition coming soon.

  3. by the way, somebody asked yesterday where jordan rhodes was born.

i believe it was oldham, but i did read an interesting comment from him.

he mentioned he was a big celtic fan, had all the strips, his dad took him to all the games when he was growing up, etc, now, can someone clarify this for me…

his old man was andy rhodes, who listed amongst former employers when young jordan was growing up dunfermline, airdrie and st johnstone, as well as some lower league english clubs.

so how did he manage to play in goal for one club while he was watching celtic at the same time (in the old days of 3pm saturday kick-offs)

did he harness the power of quantum mechanics to exist in two seperate simultaneous states, or are we getting fed another wee “only team wit ah’ve ever wantit tae play fur” line.

andy rhodes incidentally is english too, so it’s hard to see why he’d be a scotland regular. rhodes jnr is, i believe, elgible to play for scotland due to having spent more than 5 years at school in scotland while snr was playing in goals and simultaneously watching celtic.

  8. From CSA site.

No sleepless nights for Brown and Ledley worrying about Bedoya.

If Paul Gascoigne or Brain Laudrup in their playing days had threatened to knock Celtic out of the Champions league I might have had some concerns, after all, both of them were outstanding football players in their day, but Alejandro Bedoya, now that’s another thing altogether.

Here is a guy who played thirteen matches for Oldco Rangers, mostly as a sub I think, in the thirteen matches he scored one goal, not exactly prolific goal scoring, he actually has a worse record at International level, thirteen matches, and zero goals scored.

Somehow I don’t think Scott Brown or Joe Ledley will be losing much sleep worrying about another dud player who does all his playing with his mouth, I’m not surprised he walked away from Sevco 5088, I don’t think he would have got a game in Division 3.

It’s another negative story by the Scottish papers, Bedoya claim his car was trashed by Celtic fans, I think going by his performances, it is more likely it was done by the fans of a team that doesn’t exist now.

He also claims he can tell his new Helsingborg team mates about the hatred pouring down from the stands at Celtic Park, which he witnessed while sitting on the bench, was he talking about the section holding the visiting fans? That’s where most of the hatred came from.

Getting back to some positive talk. The draw for the next round of the Champions league has been decent, although I wouldn’t take Helsingborg lightly, it is a tie we should be able to progress form with the right application.

Our big concern right now will be injuries to players like Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes, and the tragic fractured jaw suffered by Dylan Mc Geouch, we will need all our top players available for selection, and I would include Ki in that, I think there is a lot more to come from him, he has all the attributes to be a top class player.

But if Ki wants to leave then I would use the money to try to buy Jordan Rhodes, we are in the hunt for a striker, and he could be a Celtic Legend for many years, if we could persuade Huddersfield to sell him, and if we could persuade him to come.

We now have two very difficult away matches at Dingwall and Inverness, as well as the two matches against Helsingborg, but it could be worse, it could be Brechin or Peterhead

    CQN fantasy league :- fantasy.premierleague.com

To all those who played last year, its a simple 5 minute job to re-register and set up your team, most of you will have probably forgotten your passwords so just type in your email and a recovery password will be sent to you.

New players just register normally, will take no longer than ten minutes.

I have done a classic league for this year, get as many points and most points wins, very simple compared to last years unpopular head to head win, lose, draw system!

  13. This chat about Green paying back their Scottish football debt. Sevco will not get anywhere near a UEFA competition until they pay back the likes of Rapid who are owed £1,011,763.44. It will be interesting to see what the Fifa Dispute Resolution Chamber in Zurich rule in regard to the debt.

  14. Guest blogger on Paul McConville has a decent article re the most recent antics of Green.

He observes: “So what is he up to? Is it really all about selling tickets? Or, is it because his financial Master Plan is about to crash and he is challenging the SFA to bring him down so he can walk-away and blame everyone but himself.”

I have thought for some weeks now that it is the latter. This latest outburst and the Brechin happy clapping tells me he is for walking away after being banned by the SFA.

If Regan were smart he would stall and keep him waiting by which time I reckon everybody will be walking away from Ibrox.

  20. bizarre… last post on this, did a wee bit of googling…

“Oldham-born Rhodes used to attend Celtic matches with father Andy, who played for Airdrie, Dunfermline and St Johnstone.

“I was a Celtic fan growing up and had all the jerseys and went to the matches with my dad,” he said about the prospect of a move to Celtic Park.”

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19251726

    however…

“Scotland won the match 2–1.[25] Rhodes said to the press after the game, “It was never in doubt I would be sticking with Scotland. I’m Scottish through and through. I had all the jerseys as a kid and grew up watching Scotland.””

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan_Rhodes

This leads me to suspect that as a kid, Jordan Rhodes had a bigger wardrobe than Elton John, and saw more football than Mrs Strachan.

Andy Rhodes incidentally gave one of my favourite post match interviews ever. When asked about his performance after a particular Saint Johnstone match his considered if somewhat concise response was simply “I was c**p” before departing from the press throng.

I am aware of his scoring prowess but think the key to his success is that he has creative players around him creating good chances for him.

    He can finish, no doubt.

I believe that if Watt, Hooper and Stokes were getting better service we wouldn’t be looking at a Huddersfield player.

We’d be fending off EPL clubs trying to buy our high scoring superstars.

    In my opinion, of course.

  26. Norwich are thought to have made a player-plus-cash offer for Celtic full-back Emilio Izaguirre worth in the region of £5million.

Canaries boss Chris Hughton is keen to improve his defensive options and is looking for someone who could take over from Marc Tierney at left-back.

Honduras international Izaguirre has shone since joining Celtic in 2010 and last summer was linked with a move to Manchester United.

Hughton is hoping to have more success than Sir Alex Ferguson did in persuading the left-back to move south of the border, the Norwich head coach offering £5million plus James Vaughan.

  28. How many months has it taken the compliance officer to pull up Fat Sally? He did not hang about on this one.

Queen’s Park skipper Ricky Little has been charged by the Scottish Football Association for making “comments of a threatening nature” on Facebook.

A newspaper report claimed the defender had used the social networking site to say he would injure Rangers players.

The SFA’s compliance officer has issued Little, 23, with a notice of complaint.

He faces a charge of “not acting in the best interests of Association Football by posting on Facebook improper comments of a threatening nature”.

Following the alleged incident, a statement from Queen’s Park president Ross Caven on the club’s website read: “Accompanied by our general manager and first-team coach I discussed the matter with the player immediately following last Saturday’s game against Airdrie United.

“The player assured those present that the exchange represented no more than casual ‘banter’ amongst long-standing friends.

“He also confirmed that as far as he was aware the only people reading his postings would understand the flippant context in which they were made.

“This has proven to be a salutary lesson for Ricky as he is now fully aware that digital media is a very open form of communication and it can be unable to reflect the context of an exchange and therefore be mis-interpreted.

“Consequently, both Ricky and Queen’s Park FC apologise for any anxiety which might have unintentionally been caused and the club will at an appropriate time contact Rangers to pass on a similar message.

“Ricky assured both myself, our general manager and our first-team coach that he would approach the Rangers ties within our Division Three campaign in the same sporting manner that he has approached all of his 124 appearances for our club to date.”

Little’s SFA hearing will take place on 30 August.
