Technical review needed after Real game

882

The trip to the US to play Real Madrid is core to strategy for Celtic right now.  It allowed the significant North American support an easier opportunity to see the team, keeps the club’s profile high among the game movers and shakers and will have contributed valuable financial resources.

You know there’s a ‘but’ coming, don’t you.

Gary Hooper, Anthony Stokes and Daryl Murphy all picked up or aggravated strains on the trip.  The players are still stepping up their fitness regimes.  Muscles are being stressed, then rested, then stresses a little further.  Returning from two lengthy flights with a high incidence of non-contact injuries suggests we need to review how we prepare athletes for travel.

Do you like the new-look Celtic Quick News?  Some fundamental changes have engineered into the back-end which should make things more solid going forward.  More new features will come on-stream shortly.  My enormous thanks to Kev, who designed the template and everything new in the engine room.

Don’t forget, if you have an article in you for CQN Magazine email me: articles@cqnmagazine.co.uk and let me know what you would like to write about. I’ll be able to give you some pointers. Next edition coming soon.

  1. I posted the other night using a baker shop analogy for the tax-dodging Orcs cheating ways and how it gave them such a massive financial advantage- but the analogical limitations of that argument starkly reveal the true extent of the cheating when put into its proper context: football is a sport, about competing for cups and leagues against your rivals; that is the very objective of following a football club, to win something. Now a business, like a Bakers, is ultimately about making cakes, pastries and pies and the like, as well as making a sustainable profit. Irrespective of the financial arguments concerning how few teams generate sustainable profits, as this is a side show for most fans (whose investment is both monetary and most importantly emotional), it is ultimately about the hope of winning trophy’s. A bakers awards ARE A SIDESHOW. Not so a football fans: it is absolutely central to the experience of both financial/emotional investment that defines what it means to be a ‘fan’*. This in itself proves that those trophy’s have to be given back as they were not only won unfairly but robbed other fans of the opportunity to celebrate the potential winning of those trophy’s- how can any reasonable right minded person argue with this?

    * Yes I know in a strict sense supporting Celtic or for a fan of any other club, its more than that; and for us Celtic supporters the club is more than just a football team, but everything being equal the hope of winning trophy’s on a level playing field has to be the annual objective for all of us.

With all the freebies out there, I don’t think we have to splash out for any player, lest of all 6 or so mill.

I know Spurs were looking at Rhodes last season, they were at a game when he scored 5, I think, they took it no further.

Who would be a football manager, tis easy from behind a computer screen.

Ole Johnny- it looked like someone had come into work hungover, and vomited over the sales projections.

It kind of summed up all that was wrong with Celtic at the time, thast no one could be arsed to design a decent strip for us.

By the way, South African Tims, the game is on Supersport 7 next Tuesday – is that a good omen?

Work down in yorkshire quite a bit and try to go to as many games as I can when I’m here. Rhodes is an out and out predator. He’s not a link man, not very good at holding the ball up, can’t play up front alone (according to Huddersfield fans i know) but comes alive in the box. A slow Gary Lineker is how one guy described him, he has the knack of being in the right place at the right time and is a clinical finisher. To get the best out of him you would need to partner him with someone else, Samaras being the obvious one from our current strikers.

You are correct, clubs at top end of League 1 last season (Huddersfield, Sheff U, Sheff W, MK Dons etc) are all at least on a par with SPL clubs (except us).

    srs,

Thommo, released the leggo result yesterday with a dig about strathclyde polis being corrupt as it took the NUJ to punish him for threatening behaviour whilst the bears in blue refused to take his complaint any further.

I noted big nan having a go at Thommo for having a go at the corrupt polis, distinct smell of bacon.

To all those who played last year, its a simple 5 minute job to re-register and set up your team, most of you will have probably forgotten your passwords so just type in your email and a recovery password will be sent to you.

New players just register normally, will take no longer than ten minutes.

I have done a classic league for this year, get as many points and most points wins, very simple compared to last years head to head win, lose, draw system!

To join the league the code is :- 721106-181775

  17. i would be wary of selling Izzy. Yes, he has not come and played to the same high standard after injury – and 5m is 5m (plus a player that Lennon seems to like).

But 2 seasons ago he was the best LB in the county. If he goes – we need Charlie in CB and Ledley in CM. Both of whom can be exposed at LB against good teams.

So, if Izzy goes, we need to buy a LB and they are often not cheap.

  18. Good left backs have a premium on their price compared to other positions… due to their rarity. If the Club are serious about progressing in Europe – they need to either keep a quality player such as Emilio, or replace him accordingly. We all know that he will not be replaced accordingly – some championship dross like danny fox will probably arrive in his place.)

If the club are content to win a backwater spl, one of the 2 domestic cups and do nothing in europe – then by all means take a few million for emilio and play the failed english striker vaughan.

The board’s actions so far this off-season – have stank of zero ambition. Let’s see what they do with regard to this offer.

gaizka toquero (bilbao) is about the best going. not really a “striker,” more a mcgeady attacking wide player.

asier del horno (levante) would be a good left back if izzy goes, but probably on very high wages. and a wee bit injury prone.

i also always liked palop the keeper, but obviously not what we need.

as the regards the english lot, nothing to see there that we need/can afford.

He has since signed for c palace. had a good game against us at carrow road -6’3″ striker – could have done well in the spl. Hopefully we are looking at better quality.

M-A Fortuné is also on the list – good athlete, decent player, who honestly looks to me like he improved at west brom. Could do worse than look at him.

I was just saying on Saturday on the way home from Philly that we need a player like Darryl Murphy up front. Except one who was effective.

We were continually losing the ball out of defense and we were overworked with our front men unable to provide relief to an under siege defence.

  27. Paul67 – A comment on the new look. I think there is way too much screen real estate wasted. If you get an average 3 lines per post, the max posts per page is probably 3 with the screen dominated by extra large user names, huge F’book or Twitter link and tons of wasted lines due to wider than necessary spacing between lines of text.

Perhaps move the ‘share’ link up to the same row as the user name. Same thing could be done for the time stamp to allow wider space for posts. Reduce font size, decrease line spacing. Finally, instigate a 1-day ban for anyone posting a wasted podium post (unless it is me)
