Tectonic plates shift and our world shakes

Football has a habit of bringing you back down to earth as soon as you think you can fly.  That may happen tomorrow evening, but what cannot be denied, is that that this Celtic team provide joy and entertainment that you and I have seldom seen in our lives.

On Saturday, the pass and movement game Ange Postecoglou has been building came together against a Champions League-level opponent who knew what to expect but could do nothing about it.  Newco tried to break Celtic’s passing game, they kicked, and elbowed to the face with impunity, but still, the ball kept moving around, making statues of those in blue.

The force and range with which Reo Hatate delivered his passes made it near impossible for defenders to be in the right place to do the basics.  Despite what must still be painful memories for some defenders, Liel Abada was able to take up a striker position when Celtic had possession on the left wing.

If Liel’s ability to find space and time in a crowded penalty area brought memories of the Great Swede, Jota’s finish brought you back to a field in Lancashire in November 2002.  Jota’s finish was more difficult that Henrik’s that night, though.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst correctly identified how quickly Celtic resumed play after a stoppage.  This was key to two of the goals on Saturday; it also provided a moment of panic, when Joe Hart misplaced a rushed goal kick.  He was lucky his opponent touched the ball a yard before it left the penalty area.  He was lucky his opponent was not competent.

You wait ages for tectonic plates to shift, but when they do, the world shakes.  In this respect, we have had a remarkable few days.  On Thursday, Newco allowed the transfer window to close without spending any of their newly-earned Champions League money.  Then on Friday, Uefa announced they put Newco on watch, as a consequence of their persistent overspend.  The latter explained the former.  The consequence of all of this was visible to the world on Saturday.

A decade ago it was HMRC who called a halt to Oldco’s excesses, this time, with Newco, it was Uefa.  Both clubs won trophies while living beyond their means that would have gone to Celtic had they spent what they earned.  Both times were painful, but the fundamentals of business remain true.

    Re Joe Hart kick out:

    Arfield should have been booked.

    …………….

Back in the early 1980’s, I was playing centre forward one night. the Ball went out of play for a Goal Kick to the opposition. I turned my back on their Goalie while he retrieved the ball from behind his goal.

I was STILL walking out of their Penalty Area, but UNKNOWN to me, their Goalie had ALREADY Placed the Ball on their six yard line and about to kick it upfield.

As soon as the Goalie had kicked it…the REF Fecking BOOKED ME !

I started to argue with the Ref that I did NOT KNOW that he was about to take the goal kick…but my claim wasnt accepted by the HUN Ref. the REF claimed that I was DELIBERATELY wasting time ?……………The REFS name just happened to be ” WALTER” !

I met this same Ref a few short years later in the Disco that I worked in….he claimed that he didnt remember me….I reminded him of who I was, and what team I had played for….and how he OFTEN BOOKED ME for NOTHING in almost every game that he was Ref.

That night in the Disco….he was a VERY NERVY Ref.

    The Hun Bassa.

Looks like I’m wrong…about the booking of Arfield.Reading the kick out rule:

There is no disciplinary sanction unless the offence occurs a number of times.(Persistent misconduct)

Very good mate. I didnt touch him, but he suddenly became VERY NERVOUS once I had a word with him, and also knowing that I was a Bouncer in the Disco…

    LOL.

I felt like knocking him oot…but I dint want to Soil my knuckles on the Hun Bassa….

Maybe so, but THAT Ref BOOKED ME for ” TIME WASTING” back in the early 1980’s.

I was NOT deliberately wasting time, as I did NOT realise that the opposition Goalie had retrieved the Ball so quickly as IO had my BACK to and was walking out of their Penalty Area…completely UNAWARE !

My post was about the Joe Hart kick out and booking would be given for persistence misconduct, not about the run in you had with ‘Walter’.Stay safe!

Im on catch up so apologies if point already made.

The goal kick rules have been changed since 2019…

Goalkeeper can pass to team mate inside the box, everyone knows this change…

    However

It could be argued that Joe Hart was taking a quick goal to gain advantage, by Not allowing the Rangers players time to leave the box , the ball is live for the opposition player also ….

If Arfield had scored , the goal could be allowed to stand.

…..If anyone, including the ref, understood the Laws of the Game.

    The Onlooker

  9. P67 well summed up.

Kyogo took a forearm smash to the shoulder area , that went unpunished, poor refereeing.

  10. Law 16 requires all opponents to be outside the penalty area until the goal kick is taken and if an opponent remains inside or enters the penalty area before the kick is taken and plays, challenges or touches the ball, the goal kick is retaken.

However, Law 16 also applies the ‘quick’ free kick principles outlined in Law 13 – Free Kicks, 3. Offences and sanctions that if any opponents are in the penalty areas because they did not have time to leave, the referee allows play to continue.

In practical terms, this means that referees should manage goal kicks (and defending team free kicks in their own penalty area) in the same way as they manage free kicks:

    – Unless the kick is taken quickly, opposing players should be required to be outside the penalty area and remain outside until the kick has been taken.

    – If the kick is taken quickly and an opponent genuinely did not have time to leave the penalty area, the opponent may not interfere with or prevent the taking of the kick but may intercept the ball once it is in play. This is allowed because the defending team, as at a quick free kick, tried to gain an advantage by taking the kick quickly and if this ‘goes wrong’ the Law is not there to ‘save’ them.

  15. Ange Postecoglou has shut down questions about risking it all against Real Madrid with his style of play.

Celtic welcome the Spanish champions and 14-times winners of the European Cup and Champions League to Parkhead for their Group F opener on Wednesday. The Hoops head into it in blistering form, having scored 17 goals and conceded one in their last three games against Dundee United, Ross County and Rangers.

Some have pointed out that continuing to attack the way they do against a team of Madrid’s calibre is a big risk and is asking for trouble. But the Aussie head coach firmly believes that the rewards on offer justify his approach, and asked reporters at his pre-match press conference if they had a system that could guarantee his team wouldn’t come a cropper against the might of Madrid, then he’d be all ears, before stating that one simply didn’t exist.

5 things we spotted at Celtic training as Jota primed for his big Champions League chancedailyrecord

“If there’s a system that doesn’t give you risk, then I’d love to hear it,” Postecoglou said. “If there’s something that you can guarantee me tomorrow night that if I play this way, you’ll guarantee will minimise risk, then it doesn’t exist.

“Any system you play, any approach you take, there’s inherent risk. But sometimes, the greater the risk, the greater the opportunity. Because we’re trying to do things a little bit differently. We don’t want to be like every other team. With that, there’s always the possibility that you’ll stumble.

“That’s fine. I’ve stumbled in the past. The important thing is you dust yourself off and keep going. It’s not about being confident of winning. All we can do is control our performance. Every game we play, we try and play the game a certain way and be the best we can be in every game.

“That’s what we’ve done in every game so far, it’s what we did last year and it’s what we’ll try and do tomorrow night. We’ll try and play our football, be the best team we can be and the end result is often a consequence of strong performance.

“There’s no point in us thinking about winning, losing or any other result. The first thing we want to do is make sure we perform, because we’re playing against a top football team with fantastic players and a brilliant manager. What we want to do is go out there and offer the best of ourselves to measure up against that.”

Anyone know why that league cup game moved to such a daft time?

I’m not gonna say it fits in with my lunch break, central time…;o)

On an unrelated matter – the infeasible pattern of making sure rangers play ahead of us all season so far has back fired.

Their early KO on Saturday is a pressure game – the crowd and atmosphere will reflect that.

We know already that the empty stadium champs , don’t like it up ’em…

  17. One big change we could see possession-happy teams like Manchester City take advantage of centers around goal-kicks. A goal-kick is no longer required to leave the penalty area before a teammate touches the ball, meaning once the goalkeeper touches the ball for the kick, it is immediately considered in play. Opponents must remain outside the penalty area when a goal-kick takes place.

Good point. In my defence, the 3 named coaches were named by Denia…..

  19. Kyogo Furuhashi is available to face Real Madrid in Celtic’s Champions League group-stage opener, says manager Ange Postecoglou.

The Japan forward scored six goals in five games before going off after three minutes of Saturday’s 4-0 win over Rangers.

However, centre-back Carl Starfelt will miss the Group F meeting with the defending champions at Celtic Park.

“He trained this morning and looked OK,” Postecoglou said of Kyogo.

“He’s available. I make the decision whether he’ll play or not, but in terms of him training and doing everything in training, he was fine.
