Tensions and preparations ahead of first big test

512

As Ronny Deila chose to leave first team players to their training duties, instead taking a fringe squad for Saturday’s friendly against St Pauli, Norwegian compatriot, Henning Berg, had a league game in Cracow, which Legia won comfortably.

Playing games is the best way to improve fitness but two games per week comes at a cost, fitness metrics are never as high ahead of the second game as they would be if pre-match preparation was a week long.  With a day already lost to travel, Ronny clearly decided the players needed preparatory work for Warsaw more than the disruption caused by the pre-match-day preparation for St Pauli, the game itself, then post-match rest-day brought about by Saturday’s match.

Henning Berg rested most of his first team ahead of their second leg against St Pat’s (resulting in a home defeat in the league), and, perhaps mindful of not showing too much of his hand to Celtic, rested four players on Saturday.  His team are also a couple of weeks’ training ahead of Celtic, which will be the major benefit Legia will hope to exploit.

While Celtic moaned about having to play three qualification rounds I’m sure Ronny will be happy he saw his team in competitive action against KR ahead of tonight’s game.  There was enough about the first half in Iceland two weeks ago to remind him that an edge is needed, and it is not straightforward to find, even against such lowly opposition.

While Celtic progressed to the group stage in each of the last two seasons, the corresponding fixture to tonight caused some concern on both occasions.  HJK Helsinki were eventually overcome 2-1 after taking a lead at Celtic Park two years ago, while we took an equally narrow 1-0 to Elfsborg last season.  Celtic would go on to produce memorable and record breaking seasons, but the preparation gradient has proven to be steep.

Celtic’s major advantage could, conversely, be the partisan home crowd, who are sure to be switched on from kick off, but Berg’s team have not won any of their three home games this season.  The natives are getting restless and could easily become frustrated, increasing the tension already evident on Legia.  The first goal could be crucial.

No passengers tonight, Celtic, especially late in the game, when limbs tire.

They are not. Two of them have been. Do you not think that James Forrest, Liam Henderson and Calvin Miller are not sought after targets too?

Andrew Robertson has already achieved a very decent level. Let’s wait and see if Gauld actually does anything before we decide he is the new McCarthy?

Dundee United finished 4th in the league, one point above ICT and 41 points behind us. We would have cause for a Sack The Board campaign if we did that.

    ====================

We might have another Sack the Board campaign anyway if the comments sections on many of the forums are anything to go by:)

A wee bit unfair to Gauld saying he has done nothing, and a damning assessment on Sporting Lisbons scouting operation if you think they are paying 3m for guys who have done nothing! I think they have a slightly more professional setup than that.

Forrest is going to be lucky to string 10 games together without getting injured so if as you suggest we have a big bid sitting there I’d suggest we take it.

I’ve heard great things about Calvin Miller, but I remember cheering Michael McGlinchey onto the pitch at half time as he was paraded as a 15 year old as the next big thing.

I suppose the earliest we will know about these guys top team potential is when they have grown up physically and been given a proper run IN the first team. Dundee United offer young players that – we don’t to any great extent, not even after the league is won in March.

Are we to believe that 3 Celtic youth coaches rate these Bhoys that highly that the Celtic manager doesn;t listen to them and punts these Bhoys on and doesn’t give them a first team game?

I am sorry but I find that very difficult to believe. If that is the case then the coaches would become frustrated and leave and the board would be asking questions why young players who are ‘stars’ are being allowed to leave the club whilst they are sanctioning the purchase of expensive duds.

It’s all very difficult to believe I’m afraid.

I think a tie up with a lower league club is essential to blood these guys at a decent level. Playing games during the day on public parks or training pitches does not have them ready for first team action. Very few can make the jump up in the cut throat world of playing for Celtic. If you do not hit the ground running you are slaughtered!

The loan deal benefitted McGregor. Maybe we should try that with a few others.

Sporting Lisbon, with money from their big money sells have taken a punt on Gauld’s promise, just as Chelsea did with Islam feruz. Both clubs can afford to gamble with that money.

I have published the stats on James Forrest’s appearance record. He is injury prone because he has a current injury not because he has a record of being injured. There have been rumours that he has a troubling condition and, if they are true, your description of him may become justified. I wonder, however, why PL did not sell him at the price bids he was fetching from Harry Redknapp etc; if he felt that his career was at an end or severely curtailed?

Yes, that is definitely an option – we seem to have the best batch of youngsters we’ve had for a long time in terms of potential.

The success of McGregors loan move(and to some extent Watts who did actually score goals in Belgium) shows it may be the way to go – you have to trust the management of the club they are going to and have a recall clause if they are not getting game time.

And maybe not be so quick to let them go just becuase they are not the tallest, a la Robertson…

I agree we need to build an alternative way to continue the development of the youth teams.

Asking a bhoy of 20 to become a first team contender overnight is asking too much of him.

His major development will happen between 23 and 25 and we must find a way to better influence that development.

Short of forming a reserve side which plays in the SPFL or the northern areas of the EPL reserve league, I would like to see a batch of players, maybe three or four, being loaned to a lower SPFL side for say a year to gain regular competitive games and develop within the Celtic game philosophy.

Maybe the first year they are loaned to a first or second division side and in the following year to a championship side where they will be hardened by playing teams like Sevco.

Have to disagree on your timings.

We should be looking at platters who can good enough to get a run of competitive games with the 1st team at 22 at the latest.

They need to be a part of the 1st team squad at that age — 25 is too late.

Regarding the youth system and youths leaving the club…

Outwith Denny Johnstone’s decision to leave the club entirely shouldn’t we think about the strategy Real Madrid employ with their youths who leave?

They include a buy back clause on all their youths in the event that they go on to fulfill their potential. Danny Carvajal being the most prominent when he joined Leverkusen for €5 million.

Madrid added on a buy-back clause in the region of €6.5 million if they wanted to re-sign the player after one season, €7 million after two seasons, and approximately €8.5 million after three.

I’m not saying any of our youth will fetch those sorts of figures but as a business model isn’t it worth thinking about rather than letting a potential star leave for a minimum development fee?

  29. Bada,

    ==================================

He has broken through at 17, played a lot of games and averages a goal every 6 from midfield. He is impressing for Scotland under 21s despite still being eligible for Under 19s. He has pace to burn, control, tricks and can pick a pass. He will reach his peak in about 10 years when he will be stronger and have more game intelligence.

Just because you may not have noticed any of this or his transfer didn’t get worldwide attention doesn’t mean he has done nothing.

Celtic were well aware of him but the numbers became too big in terms of a transfer precisely for the reason that a lot of scouts HAVE noticed what he has done.

In terms of bids from ‘Harry Redknapp etc’ for Forrest- I’m not sure how many bids there actually were, or whether the Spurs bid was genuine or anywhere near the quoted figure…very doubtful imo.
