Textbook away performance, Brand Britain

3353

I was a bit annoyed at BT’s halftime analysis which suggested Celtic were more than fortunate to be level at that stage.  Salzburg had just enjoyed their best 15 minute period of the game, but, from beginning to end, Celtic’s performance was a textbook lesson on how to play away from home in Europe.  We took our chances and drew our defensive line well in front of our box.  This is how it’s done.

Were you as comfortable as I was during the final minutes last night?

Having watched the performance against Aberdeen on Saturday, when we bossed the game but were penned back when, with two debutants and a returning Scott Brown in the team, the legs faded in the last 30 minutes, I expected the same to happen last night.

Instead, Scott’s goal arrived on 60 minutes, which infused Celtic legs with adrenalin.  This was the crucial moment of the game.  We conceded that fabulous goal from Soriano during the final 30 minutes, but this was also our best period of the game.  Wakaso (who is a player, b.t.w.) ran himself into the ground – literally.  Brown, Johansen, Izaguirre and Ambrose all covered enormous areas of the pitch.

Instead of going through turmoil in the closing stages, we saw Salzburg drop deep, acknowledging the clear danger they could concede for a third time.

The one obvious question is, how did we pick Craig Gordon up for free?

Brand Britain

Brand Britain is damaged. Last night’s vote was a high water mark for independence, so far, but the demographic breakdown suggests support for change is strongest among the young. If the three major UK parties have any intention of maintaining the status quo they need to indulge in considerable Nation Building.

The football business in Britain is in the hands of two closed-shop cartels, one in England and Wales [controlled by the affluent], and one in Scotland [controlled by the unambitious]. This arrangement has disenfranchised Scottish football and drains our economy of tens of millions of pounds per year. It is a clear manifestation of second class status for Scotland and our economy, which is unacceptable for anyone who considers the UK to be one nation.

Politicians with an interest in pushing the buttons of the people, should use this time to call this arrangement out for what it is.

    Paul,

Career politicians lack any clear intent to build anything. The servile public servant in our current society is to ride the gravy train, while lining the pockets of his corporate masters.

To these corporate puppets, nothing is of import outside the M25. The vast swathes of the island are a means to an end- rake in more money.

This IMHO was the faintest glimmer of hope in the Indy campaign. For once the people would speak and reject their corrupt war mongering and profiteering, in that we might have a wee shot at building our own political landscape.

Alas, this was not to be, as the Scottish people have been subjected to a monotone of fear, negativity and anxiety over the preceding months leading up to the vote. The Better Together campaign played a blinder in evoking emotions of loss, uncertainty and insecurity. The shadowy folk pulling the strings must the rubbing their hands in glee today.

How Scotland will react now will be fascinating. We are to be dragged inevitably with English nonchalance toward a short term future that comprises of a growing right wing mentality and further “austerity”.

I for one will continue to put my faith in the Scots, hoping that their perpetual slumber has finally been awakened. One suspects that the desire for autonomy is not dead in the water yet.

Obituary – The Nation of Scotland

Between 10pm on the 18th September and 6am on the 19th September the nation of Scotland died. It was a long illness with its origins in the greed laden 1980’s. The inability of its people to look beyond “what is in it for me“ to what is good for all citizens eventually sapped its strength.

That a country could not bring itself to govern itself, by definition, means that it is not a country at all. It has now passed to being a region, a province, a protectorate something less than it could have been. The people themselves decided promises that, already just twelve hours after the result are foundering, allowed themselves to be deluded, and deflected to the point they took the easy option.

Building any country is not easy. Hard choices have to be made. There is no utopia for any new land .

The country who brought us the “Age of enlightenment”, some of the greatest scientific break throughs that the world has seen, contributed to the industrial wealth and ingenuity that drove the British Empire to become the only truly global empire in the history of the world ultimately did not have the self-belief, the confidence, and more importantly the will to govern its own citizens.

I cannot think of another country in the world, in a similar position to Scotland, that would not wish to be able to stand on its own, to govern its own for its own benefit, to harness the power of its own assets for the good of all and in that I feel, not only remorse, but deep shame.

Scotland today is only a country in sporting terms. It has lost all vestige of national pride beyond this.

they are the clowns people on here have been telling you for months that you are in bed with.

  17. Weeminger

    Are jobs important?

Is a society satisfied it is getting a fair crack of the national whip important?

Is reversing the downward spiral in an industry that is important to the nation’s physche important?

Are these not the kind of thing Indy was trying to create the conditions to achieve?

If yes, why because football is the industry in question should it be excluded from trying to achieve those objectives as a result of what the debate has highlighted?

How many folk in Scotland have livelihoods that depend on football? How many of them face unemployment or loss of opportunity as the industry fails?

If it were not for the background how many would say a UK league is not a desirable aim, that jobs are not important nor are the other benefits.

I can appreciate the timing might touch raw nerves but the aim aligns perfectly with what Indy was trying to bring about and I’m surprised folk so keen on Indy fail to see the bigger picture.

Because football is totally interdependent as an industry, it is inevitable that Celtic as part of that industry and on a Celtic blog will be seen as the beneficiary and motivation for raising the issue but that is to lose site of what I thought Indy was trying to achieve – choice and prosperity.
