The defence has seen most additions. Jozo Simunovic, Saidy Janko and Dedryck Boyata arrived, with Tyler Blackett on loan from Manchester United. Belgian, Logan Bailly, came in as our backup keeper after a decent career in Belgium, Germany and Switzerland.

Two attacking midfielders were signed: Scott Allan, who has made a couple of cameo appearances, and Ryan Christie, who will further gestate in Inverness until the end of the season.

Nadir Ciftci was the manager’s primary striking target, and although he arrived early in the window, his start has been hampered by a six game domestic ban, while the Champions League qualifiers arrived too early for him. A lot of store is being placed on his and Leigh Griffiths’ shoulders.

Will they be stronger than the Griffiths, Scepovic, Guidetti offering of last season? Will they be good enough for the challenge ahead? Place your bets ladies and gentlemen (and opposed to send me inappropriately emotional messages).

I read lots of comment about Steven Fletcher or and Michu potentially coming to Celtic over the last few days. They were players who Celtic enquired about earlier in the window but neither was interested in coming to Scotland. They are in the league they want to play in, we were not remotely on their radar.

Oh, and the van Dijk deal was for £13m, not the £11.5m reported earlier. Think we might have some Fraser/Victor reflected value in this deal.

That’s all folks!

  1. I’m astonished the amount of people who don’t get it when we sign a player and later he wants to get transferred to the EPL?

It’s why they sign for us, that’s how we get them,

You can’t knock that kind of money back, and the weekly salary offered to the player we can’t even come close to.

As long as sky keep throwing stupid money at English football, then this will always be what it is,.

We are a selling club, we buy to sell have done for a few years now, so don’t renew, don’t come back as a few of you are saying (it’s your choice) that’s your opinion.

Me? I’m going no where, call me what you like, or slag me off for supporting my team (which I find very strange I might ad) I’m in for the long haul, as I said till they box me off.

I’m not being scammed, taken to the cleaners, being ripped off, I love my club and I’ll be there as long as I can, there are people on here who haven’t been to Celtic Park in the last 4/5 years, and post that proudly in hear? And the have the audacity to tell me what is wrong with the club, the board, and our CEO,

Seriously you really want me to take you serious, malcontents are what they are and are never pleased NEVER but to sit there and post in here the rights and wrongs of a club I support is not on.

And don’t pull the card that doesn’t make you a better supporter than they are, I claim to be no better than any one, but they have my support and that is what they don’t like, ffs we got guys in here saying…it breaks my heart, my family ties with Celtic go way way back, and it huts me to say this but I’ve had enough, no more, I won’t be back? Away and bite my arse, who posts this s,,, Celtic Supporters? Not the ones I know and go to the games with not a chance in hell, it’s the SMSM AND HUNSwho come in here, and some bite it hook , line, and sinker.

Our scouting system is useless when it comes to spotting a striker.

Our scouting system has cost the Club millions on dud strikers.

Celtic should have spent more millions on a scouted striker.

Does that sum up the argument?

TBB a transaction based on a fraudulent misrepresentation which results in the transfer of property is VOIDABLE at the instane of the party who made a loss.

Some property rights are protected – such as a recorded heritable title where the title holder acquires a “real” right but even there it would still be possible to raise an action of reduction.

The difficulty is that until that is determined the title holder is the real title holder and it gets even more complex if that title holder borrows against the title and grants a bona fides third party a security.

There are folk on CQN who are bad mouthing Celtic and our signings before they even kick a ball what ever happened to give a player a chance ? I am not unhappy with our dealings in the transfer window and all this shouting for a striker when we still have three at the club Griffiths,Stokes and Cifti and as Ronny only plays one striker in a game we are well covered in that area.We also signed a bhoy who can play left back to put pressure on Izzy to up his game.We sold VVD as he wanted to go and would not sign a new contract we received a Scottish transfer record of £13 million for a player who wanted out and we by all accounts replaced him with a very promising youngster so why so many are unhappy escapes me that gentlemen is how I see it and I say well done Celtic roll on the Aberdeen game. H.H,

  10. I wonder how lawwell would perform if the absent landlord wasn’t in the picture . I may be well off the mark , but I think this character is our biggest problem . He has undoubtedly invested what we see as a huge amount of cash , but it’s a drop in the ocean to this guy . He hardly ever attends matches unless big profile games , preferring golf and racing to overseeing his investment , yet every decision made seems to come from him . Celtic f.c seems to be a plaything for the guy . Again i could be wrong , but PL is following the instructions of the absent landlord , as far as I’m concerned if he wanted a strong celtic . If he hurt the same as we do watching inept performances , if he wanted celtic back to where a club of its size and pedigree should be , among European elite , then with one nod of his head we would see a better celtic team . This guy knows nothing about football , this is the man who asked F1 racing boss Eddie Jordan who he thinks should be the manager of celtic . No , as far as I’m concerned he is the problem .

Thought that was a great post – not a rant but lays out exactly where we are – who knows maybe rd will play a blinder and craft a team – on the other hand we don’t know if we’re going to avoid a bobo or a derk or two.

  12. jimthetim53

I never said he was bog standard but he is certainly inexperienced at a higher level of Scottish football. No problem signing him at all but overall our ambition should be higher than this.

  13. Well that was a busy transfer window. Some exciting young players in and no one leaving unexpectedly. so pretty decent from that point of view. I’d have liked an older head to come in to add to the experience and leadership in the squad, and another striker would have been nice too. But we now have a collection of young Scottish talent that will make the next few years really interesting as they mature.

Our defence was always going to change. VVD and Jason Denayer were both likely to go. It will take time for a new pairing to settle and we need to cut them some slack. SImunovic is highly rated and fits the business model. Hopefully he will give us two or three good years before moving on.

I know we only play with one up front, but we are a little light in that department now, An injury to Leigh Griffiths would be a nightmare with Ciftci still to prove himself and Stokes apparently not seen as suiting that role.

  14. E Tims has a “slightly” more rounded summary of our transfer dealings than many on the blog, worth a read.

Ciftci has a lot to prove, if he and its still s big if in my eyes comes up with the goods we will be in good shape going forward.

Jozo is hardly an inexperienced youth, two league titles and two national cups by 21 is good going. Sorry to see VVD go but he clearly wanted to go and has been found wanting outside of the SPL see first goal lost in Malmo.

  17. Not sure I know how to express this, but I like some aspects of our recent signings. The Scottishness of them. We now have at least 12 senior players who could be internationalists. That’s the most in a long time.

if we can’t afford to buy in the big market then buy local. develop and KEEP!

Maybe just maybe, on the assumption that we don’t discover a Messi, they might stay and we can build a team around Scottish players. This is no disrespect to foreign players we need a mix of both. We would have been impoverished without so many of our brilliant stars from overseas. but I like Ronnys eye towards Scottish players as a KPI.

I really like the signings of Scott Allan and Ryan Christie I predict a great future for these two players. with us!

    Made my morning!

  21. For five years now Celtic fc managers have been unable to play 4 4 2

Why. Because we have not had two goal scoring strikers. A damming indictment on our CEO and scouting team

The new Celtic catch phrase. “Who are we selling next year to make up for failure”

  22. I have posted only twice on CQN in many years of “lurking” as I have always considered Paul’s site to be the definitive font of information and good comment on all things Celtic. I also like to catch up on comments from good people who I know from following Celtic including such luminaries as: SFTB; Burnley; Gordon (Celtic Historian) and Garcia Lorca. Over the last year or so however the site would appear to have become a haunt for many whose prime objective would appear to be to drive a political agenda and many others of a “We Deserve Better” mind-set, reminiscent of those of a Govan persuasion, including the sad gentleman from Sydney who perhaps could benefit from seeking medical advice for his obsession. For a more realistic and balanced view of recent events I commend to you today’s E Tims Diary. It even contains a picture of an icon of many the current CQN posters!

  24. Are we seriously being expected to believe that Fletcher and Michu , knocked us back at 10.30 last night? Players get tapped up all the time, you find out if he is interested in coming to a club. There was never any intention of bringing another striker in, another Transfer Window smokescreen IMO.

  26. A great transfer window for Celtic. But only if you’re comparing it with last summer’s shambles where 6 of the 7 signings are no longer with us. How many of the 8 will be there come 1st September 2016?

The manager highlighted the need for some experience in the squad. He didn’t get any.

We have a young, talented, some may even say exciting squad of players, but without some experience beside them they may struggle when the pressure is on and will inevitably be inconsistent. We should still win the league comfortably, possibly a cup but little chance of a treble. And the lack of a new striker indicates we’ve as good as given up on Europe for this season.

Good to see the squad numbers reduced and some of our youngsters going out to get some game time, but why is Boerrigter still there. Admit we made a huge error in signing him, pay him what he’s owed and get rid of him.

  27. !!Bada Bing!! on 2nd September 2015 10:09 am

No we’re not expected to believe that:

“I read lots of comment about Steven Fletcher or and Michu potentially coming to Celtic over the last few days. They were players who Celtic enquired about earlier in the window but neither was interested in coming to Scotland. They are in the league they want to play in, we were not remotely on their radar.”

  28. Despite some pointing out that the league was won by 17 points last season, Tiny Tim is correct. The head to head victories saw us over the line. Aberdeen picked up 1 point from their last 4 games when they realised the game was up and the tools put away. They matched our record against all the other teams in the league. I don’t see that changing this season. The next game at Pittodrie is a vital one and gives us a chance to lay down a marker again.

  29. http://www.itv.com/news/2015-09-02/chelsea-send-33-players-out-on-loan-in-transfer-window/

Most European leagues can now boast a Chelsea loan player, as the club have 33 out on loan across the continent.

The Premier League champions have stockpiled a collection of stars and promising youngsters, who they have sent out to get first-team football.

There’s a great range of where the players are currently situated, from the likes of Juan Cuadrado at Italian champions Juventus to young striker Islam Feruz at Scottish Championship side Hibernian.

Are Celtic following the Chelsea model ? obviously on a smaller scale

Marquee signing: Celtic manager Ronny Deila moved quickly to plug the gap in central defence left by Jason Denayer’s return to Manchester City. Indeed, the Norwegian will hope that it is a like-for-like swap as the 19-year-old prospect has been replaced by more experienced fellow Belgian international Dedryck Boyata. The 24-year-old has been in cold storage for much of his career in England but has already looked a stand-out in the heat of the Champions League qualifiers.

Key arrival: Ronny Deila’s priority will have been a quality striker. John Guidetti’s star faded long before the end of the Swede’s loan from Manchester City and Celtic have had to rely on Leigh Griffiths, who has yet to prove himself in Europe. The Celtic manager will hope he can channel Nadir Ciftci’s talents in a positive direction after the controversial Turk’s switch from Dundee United.

One that got away: Virgil van Dijk eventually got the move to England for which he had been pushing what seems like ever since he joined Celtic from Groningen. And Celtic will probably be happy to receive £13m for the Dutch central defender who has still to fully convince at the top level despite the hype surrounding him.

In: Jozo Simunovic, defender (Dinamo Zagreb, undisclosed); Ryan Christie, midfielder (Inverness Caledonian Thistle, undisclosed); Nadir Ciftci, forward (Dundee United, £1.5m); Dedryck Boyata, defender (Manchester City, £1.5m); Saidy Janko, defender (Manchester United, compensation); Scott Allan, midfielder (Hibernian, £275,000); Logan Bailly, goalkeeper (OH Leuven, undisclosed). Loan: Tyler Blackett, defender (Manchester United).

Out: Virgil van Dijk, defender (Southampton, £11.5m); Adam Matthews, defender (Sunderland, £2m); Teemu Pukki, forward (Brondby, undisclosed); Jackson Irvine, midfielder (Ross County, compensation); Amido Balde, forward (Metz); Joe Chalmers, defender (Motherwell); Dylan McGeouch, midfielder (Hibernian, undisclosed); Jordan Hart, goalkeeper (Annan Athletic). Loan: Ryan Christie, midfielder (Inverness Caledonian Thistle); Stefan Scepovic, forward (Getafe); Darnell Fisher, defender (St Johnstone); Stuart Findlay, defender (Kilmarnock); Liam Henderson, midfielder (Hibernian); Paul McMullan, forward (St Mirren); Eoghan O’Connell, defender (Oldham Athletic); Jamie Lindsay, midfielder (Dumbarton); Conor McManus, midfielder (Alloa Athletic); Michael Duffy, forward (Alloa Athletic); Calum Waters, defender (Dumbarton). Loan ended: Jason Denayer, defender (Manchester City); John Guidetti, forward (Manchester City); Aleksandar Tonev, midfielder (Aston Villa); Wakaso Mubarak, midfielder (Rubin Kazan).

    Last season: 1st

Prediction: 1st. Aberdeen benefited from a stuttering start to Ronny Deila’s managerial reign at Celtic Park. The Norwegian has made steady progress since and, despite their own advances, it will be a surprise if the Dons can stay in touch for so long again this season.
