The Celtic supporter’s substantial heritage

374

And, after a century, it happened again. On Saturday, 4 November 2017, Celtic set a new British football record, 63 games undefeated, eclipsing the 62 game record set by the same team in 1917, under its first manager, Willie Maley. A million Celtic fans lived and died, and didn’t see such overwhelming command of the game in Scotland.

Many of those saw nine-in-a-row and the European Cup, but they also saw the 50s, or the 90s, or both, when humbling defeat was a staple part of the Celtic diet.

The football has been scintillating with those 63 games packed with joy: the recent 0-3 at Pittodrie, the dramatic 3-4 at Fir Park, thrashing Newco 5-1 home and away, and the joy-of-joys, winning an Invincible treble with a last minute goal.

Brendan Rodgers has only been here for one title in our run of six-in-a-row, but go speak to those who were around when Jock Stein was bearing down on seven-in-a-row in 1972. The joie de vivre of yet another title, yet another run to the European Cup semi-final, was beginning to fade. Stein struggled to replace his Lions as the crown weighed increasingly heavily on the head of a new King.

What Brendan brings to the search for seven-in-a-row, and his second treble, is a freshness denied to Stein. Jock sailed straight for the sun after joining Celtic in March 1965, winning a treble, two League Cups, two (of three) Scottish Cups and that European title. We have a manager who works as though he has a point to prove and players battling for their place right across the team.

It is fitting that we reflect on breaking our own 100-year record today, the 130th anniversary of the meeting which took place in the parish hall of St Mary’s, Calton, where it was decided to establish a football club called Celtic, to raise funds to feed the impoverished children of the city.

Despite the timeless monuments to success Celtic have achieved throughout a glittering history, without that poverty, your football club would not have come into existence. If you are a Celtic supporter, your world, your very person, is a product of 19th century deprivation. Your responsibility as a fan is to nurture the substantial heritage you were given, to make our founding mission grander than anyone could imagine on 6 November 1887.

  1. BMCUWP: I agree. And in the case of Apple and the 26 County government, a truly shocking arrangement.

DD should have asked Mark Daly if he was suggesting illegality. The minute he said No the conversation should have been terminated.

The Apple case, where they were ordered to repay the Irish government €14bn made me laugh. The Irish government vowed to fight the findings!

I am convinced that Sevco are hitting administration. This Mark Daly is working to deflect shit onto Celtic in a congruous link. Shameful

To be honest dude, I think he’s just hanging on to the coat tails of a bigger investigation by BBC and others, and trying to find a Scottish angle. His angle seems to be that there is an Irish guy with a tenuous link. A very curious interpretation of his remit – which makes it open to suspicion.

Panorama led last night with auld Lizzies tax avoidance along with the russian oligarch who seems to be both the owner of Arsenal and Everton You didn’t need a crystal ball yesterday to predict that Mr Desmond’s name was going to figure somewhere along the line when these paradise papers saw the light of day.

    —————————————————————

Good point. I’m not in the least bit surprised that a billionaire like Mr. Desmond might have interests in companies that might see tax planning as one of their key responsibilities to shareholders – not that I necessarily agree with that approach.

My amazement is in BBC Scotland’s attempt to link Celtic with all of this. It has NOTHING to do with Celtic. If that’s the best BBC Scotland can come up with then people in that organisation should be losing their jobs.

    It’s pathetic.

  7. That Marcus Frazer is a bit of a looker.

Just put his picture on the mantelpiece to keep the child away from the fire.

Do you mean Murdo Fraser or my nephew Marcus at Ross County. One an ugly hun, one a handsome Tim. ;)

  10. At the time of the Offshore Game Report,I came into contact with Mark Daly and asked him if he had read it.His take on it,was that it looked like it had been written by a “Cellic” fan.

Definitely worked from the back just like McIntyre and Wilson.

  11. DD: Viva la revolucion! Still trying to get over before Christmas but our success means seats on flights are scarcer and more expensive for us non-tax avoiders/evaders.

BMCUWP: If apple had put its EU tax fine into an Escrow(?) account it would have accrued interest of over €1b by now.

Marcus was celebrating 63 on Saturday.

His mentor at Celtic was Scott Brown. He thinks that Broonie will be our next manager when Brendan leaves. Hope he is correct. Broony is idolised by all his team mates present and past. A charismatic leader of men Marcus describes him.

  13. If you want to beat the Ludge mentality on show today at BBC Shortbread — you have to out work them, put in the effort to show just how bad they are.

Seemingly there are 13K plus elements of evidence / documents involved.

There will be multiple pieces of evidence that point to tax chicanery and aggressive avoidance that are linked to people and organisations in Scotland.

Find them, highlight them, publicise them to show up the forced, partial and slanted journalism of the BBC Shortbread team.

Once you have established that their work was biased you can highlight the tax evasion that was rampant in a large local organisation that has not had any level of scrutiny from the same team of people. Highlight the fact that the largest recipient of the scheme still has a knighthood and the silence that has surrounded any efforts to fully investigate the situation and campaign for the honour to be removed.

    Work, work, work.

  15. just caught up on the tv footage.

the weirdest thing was it made it look like dermot and entourage had either came off the train at dalmarnock, or from a supporters bus in the emirates car park.

  18. Mark Daly and Andy Walker are cut off the same cloth. They love slurping the soup. Shame they do.

Saw those comments earlier today about Marcus and Jackson Irvine (one who I think the Blessed Brendan could have worked wonders with). I seriously think that we will not appreciate Broonies significance, influence and all round footballing ability until we attempt to replace him. Said as much on here at the start of the season two years ago when our results reflected his absence.

Serious case of man love for our captain.

Jacko Irvine would love to be Broonie’s replacement. He is doing great at Hull City.

Marcus would love to return too. They both lived the dream that I didnae though. :)

Marcus will never forget his debut for Celtic in a European tie.

No one will ever take that away from him.

He lived his Celtic childhood dream. Magical

  26. St Stivs @23:13

Couple of actors from Mrs Browns Boys, have their wages paid by the BBC into a Uk based production company and thereafter it was diverted offshore and paid back to them in the form of loans thereby avoiding tax I assume. The panorama reporter actually door stepped one of the actors onoutside BBC. Scotland’s HQ where the show is filmed and produced.

  27. If Celtic training had been like the Bayern training in the picture accompanying their Birthday wishes maybe you and I could have been contenders G -)

Right have a good one and as that epitome of pure Celticness, Dena, might say ….play nice.
