The Celtic supporter’s substantial heritage

374

And, after a century, it happened again. On Saturday, 4 November 2017, Celtic set a new British football record, 63 games undefeated, eclipsing the 62 game record set by the same team in 1917, under its first manager, Willie Maley. A million Celtic fans lived and died, and didn’t see such overwhelming command of the game in Scotland.

Many of those saw nine-in-a-row and the European Cup, but they also saw the 50s, or the 90s, or both, when humbling defeat was a staple part of the Celtic diet.

The football has been scintillating with those 63 games packed with joy: the recent 0-3 at Pittodrie, the dramatic 3-4 at Fir Park, thrashing Newco 5-1 home and away, and the joy-of-joys, winning an Invincible treble with a last minute goal.

Brendan Rodgers has only been here for one title in our run of six-in-a-row, but go speak to those who were around when Jock Stein was bearing down on seven-in-a-row in 1972. The joie de vivre of yet another title, yet another run to the European Cup semi-final, was beginning to fade. Stein struggled to replace his Lions as the crown weighed increasingly heavily on the head of a new King.

What Brendan brings to the search for seven-in-a-row, and his second treble, is a freshness denied to Stein. Jock sailed straight for the sun after joining Celtic in March 1965, winning a treble, two League Cups, two (of three) Scottish Cups and that European title. We have a manager who works as though he has a point to prove and players battling for their place right across the team.

It is fitting that we reflect on breaking our own 100-year record today, the 130th anniversary of the meeting which took place in the parish hall of St Mary’s, Calton, where it was decided to establish a football club called Celtic, to raise funds to feed the impoverished children of the city.

Despite the timeless monuments to success Celtic have achieved throughout a glittering history, without that poverty, your football club would not have come into existence. If you are a Celtic supporter, your world, your very person, is a product of 19th century deprivation. Your responsibility as a fan is to nurture the substantial heritage you were given, to make our founding mission grander than anyone could imagine on 6 November 1887.

TONTINE TIM on 6TH NOVEMBER 2017 1:59 PM,

    Cracking Post,

Little Addendum – The Three Parishes were St Michael’s, Sacred Heart & St Mary’s and, St Michael’s Hall was booked, Sacred Heart didn’t have one so, the Meeting was held in St Mary’s.

*always thought that but when I was doing a bit of research the other 2 parishes cropped up. i started tae write this in the hope anyone going tae the AGM would bring up our role in the game, the further I got the more upset i became as to how much we had contributed and yet continuously disparaged, even still with the tory mp underhandedly putting us down on a day when we broke yet again another record.

I did say that originally their contempt was not entirely sectarian, not now. As the much maligned Desmond White once said about the former SFA Secretary who to quote the Coronation Cup song ‘his name was big geordie he’s loyal and true and his durty big nose is the right shade of blue’. “He’ll roast in hell for what he tried to do to the Celtic”.

Big geordie better move over as there’s a host of others coming tae join him in the copland road section of hades.

Incidentally I was over on holiday when bader tried tae start his own League and we put an end tae that. When I try to find any evidence of this on the net, there is none. I did read a while back that he had bought his own wiki, owe for another leak there.

  4. Random question.

Is there an outstanding tribunal or any legals going on wrt the magic hat and staff being dismissed from 2nd rangers ?

  5. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Sevco midfielder Jamie Barjonas has signed a new contract to keep him with the Ibrox club until 2020.

Barjonas, also known as “who” has made seven first team appearances, one of which somebody says they remember.

This has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with Kieran Tierney signing a six year contract with Celtic and is definitely NOT some tame imitation of that in the hope that the MSM will, completely independently of any PR company, create puff “old firm” pieces.

    Got that?

  6. Tontine Tim.

    Great posts as ever.

    Some info, if I may.

Murdo Fraser is an MSP not an MP.

He is a list MSP as he has never finished first in any constituency he has stood for. I believe 6 or 7 times, his latest Wikipedia entry has the following.

Has taken to Twitter to slate Celtic FC fans , his most recent tweet on 4th nov 2017 read “A bit disappointing to hear some fans at McDiarmid Park today disrepecting the minute’s silence 1:34 PM – Nov 4, 2017” No other media reported the breaking of the minutes silence and in the audible broadcast by BBC Radio Scotland it appeared that all fans observed the minutes silence.

    Hail Hail

  7. this is in memory of my auld grandad though a big tim always had a soft spot for albion rovers. so the story goes young lad from coatbrig .emigrates to texas strikes it rich in the oil business. multi millionaire comes home to the brig. throws a big party for friends and relatives. next day rovers at home right were all going invites half the brig. phones up the ticket office i need 500 tickets for tomorrow no problem says the man on the end of the phone by the way what time is the kickoff what time do you want us to kickoff replies the man. hh.

  8. 50 Shades

I phoned the ticket line this morning, eight minutes to get through, to be told I could only get two seats in D2, Row E. Too close to the pitch (my old eyes can’t focus that close!) Asked if there was anything else, only to be told that she couldn’t see everything available and I’d just have to take what the system was proposing, yes or no.

I said no and said I’d phone back, which I did, and got someone who could not have been more helpful…and helped me choose good seats. Very frustrating and like you, I feel a wee note to JPT coming on.

But I probably won’t bother because I’ve got my tickets booked! :-)

  9. The media are having a field day with these hacked documents, the Paradise Papers. There is certainly no reluctance in using the hacked content.

Compare and contrast with the Charlotte Fakes documents that were released and completely ignored by the MSM.

  10. garygillespieshamstring on

BBC Reporting Scotland leads with a firm owned by Dermott Desmond being involved in tax evasion while he was in charge. I would have thought that the tax affairs of an Irish citizen might have been better left to RTE while BBC Scotland would focus on tax evasion by Scots.

Maybe they thought that the Paradise papers were about Celtic.

  11. Garygh- yep heard that anaw with the inexorable link and mention of Celtic.

Time for Desmond to speak to his lawyers.

All this when ‘best fans’ and ‘BAFTA’ completely ignored.

The pain runs deep at the BBC.

  12. LOL!!!!

BBC News – “There wiz some legal tax planning going on at a company that Dermot Demond was involved with a few years ago. This is of interest to our Scoddish listeners because he also has shares in Sellic…draw yer ain conclushins….!”

The real news – The History Bhoys are Going For 64 and show no sign of letting up. LOL!!!!!!!!

That’s the lead story on Radio Shortbread BTW!! LOL!!!!

  13. Once more BBC Scotland show their bias against Celtic with the lead item on the evening news regards Dermot Desmond and alleged Tax avoidance taken from the Paradise Papers leaks, absolutely shocking, another demonstration of how much they are hurting!!

BBC Sevcoland desperately trying to link Celtic to tax avoidance.

As one of their many EBT recipient guests takes to the air!

  15. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

Serious question-is BBC Scotland breaching its charter in its reporting of Celtic-related items, even if only using today as evidence?

  16. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Maybe I missed it, but did they say how much money Dermott pumps in to the club every year?

  17. Rowley Birkin QC on

Dermot Desmond writes to bbc lacky….”Are you a Rangers [sic] fan?

He’s been spending to much time on CQN!

  18. Poppy bashing in the record today with celtic getting it tight cause no poppy on display. Everyone at celtic is bad cause not wearing poppy, Brandon Rodger did not wear one so he is bad too. Apparently not only do you need to wear one but you can’t forget to wear it either if your going out in public, this whole freedom of expression and choice being undermined without question.

Oh and the focus is on the narrow remembrance of vitems of ww1 and ww2 which is not contensious at all but forget to talk about the wider issues like illegal wars, illegal killings, greed wars and professional soilder paid to kill, not conscripted due to invasion ffs perspective would no go a miss, but then your now allow to thinknow in this free thinking world.

I have no issue with anyone who decides to wear a poppy all power to them. when its for the correct reason ( remeberance) i have the upmost respect but it’s actually cringworthy watching these people on television with poppys on because a television camera is rolling, it’s awful as is supervised poppys and poppy bumper sticker ffs what is that about? What is respectful about that? What is respectful about boutique being held silent for one minute followed by an hour and a half of singing that totally flies in the face of the people being about to hold theit own beleifs, culture and or religion.

Genuine remembrance rather than the poppy parties which seem to accompany the poppy these days is what should be aimed for
