The Craig Whyte narrative. Kris, Leo.

1626

Best news of the day?  Kris Commons wants to be involved tomorrow against Barcelona.  I doubt Kris is anywhere near match fit, so there’s no chance of him starting on Wednesday against Astana, but a 15 minute cameo, when the Astana players’ body clocks are telling them it’s after 2am, would go down a treat.

I’ve always been a bit more ambivalent about Leonel Messi than most.  “He’s not hit the levels of Ronaldinho” is my stock comment, and then there’s the dirty little subject.  (Tax).

But his media comments ahead of tomorrow’s International Champions Cup game, “I have a Celtic jersey at home. The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them”, proves there’s substance to the man.

I’ve a Celtic jersey at home too, Leo.  A few of us here do.

Former-Rangers former vice-chairman Donald Findlay is to defend Craig Whyte is his forthcoming trial.

Whyte’s urban legend is going to be difficult to shift, but it’s not accurate.  We mocked Rangers fans a few years ago, referring to him as “Our Hero” but he never was.  He was the bag man for a very dirty job.

How he handled the SFA, Uefa, HMRC and, most crucially, the insolvency court, when he managed to secure the appointment of Duff and Phelps as Rangers administrators was crucial in the continuation of football at Ibrox.

It was Duff and Phelps who gave Newco the right to use the name “Rangers”, after which point Whyte could claim he was passing on “Rangers”.  Everyone else mocked this liquidation fantasy at the time.  Until liquidation became a reality, that is.

Whyte left Newco relatively safe in the hands of Charles Green, where it would have thrived, if it hadn’t faced a hostile and damaging takeover bid from its first week of life.

Our auction prize, donated by (the pretty fabulous) Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, closes just after 1pm today.

You can win:

2 seats in the directors’ box

Champagne reception

5 course meal in the Walfrid Suite

Fully expenses bar (pre and post-match)

Half time snacks and refreshments

Car Parking

At the game against Kilmarnock on 24 September.

Money raised from the auction will go towards building a school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals. It it will be the 5th CQN school kitchen.

Our four existing kitchens feed over 2000 primary aged kids every day. School attendance has increased 30% since kitchens were built, as kids attend for their daily meal. This has an impact on health, education and life chances.

You can follow the auction on eBay here.  Thank you.

I’m off to Aberdour now for the 12th annual CQN Golf Open.  I’ll be the one holding the jackets.

See you then.

  1. ITALIABHOY,

Sadly, I think you are all too right. I agree with everything you say.

I couldn’t believe my ears at first. Booing Efe (or anybody else) in a friendly. Embarassing. Sadly, it is the norm at Celtic Park too all too often. Symptomatic of society in the cybernet age? Certainly symptomatic of way too many posters on here.

I agree with u. The team are shaping up nicely. Lots to be positive about.

Broony seems to improve every games, Paddy R is superb and the Griff keeps on scoring.

Kolo T will be a great addition, Dembele will do the job.

    Like the look of Ajer.

Biggest task for Brendan is to get a few of the wage bill and add a couple of bits of quality.

Roll on a packed Paradise on Wednesday

I remember talking to Bertie Auld and Bobby Lennox I asked them was Bobby Murdoch big jock favoured player, and both of them answered at the same time, nnawwwww Tommy Callaghan was, Bertie said he was the teachers pet. :)) true story.

The people who are booing can’t be very clever, As soon as you boo anyone for anything you make them even more nervous, so in turn the booing will make him make even more mistakes. I sit in the Family stand at Paradise and I never hear booing of Efe, just the pantomime comments, “Yeah” when he completes a pass.

I think once we get some more CB’s fit we move Efe on for his sake and ours, Too many have turned on him and as I said earlier, He makes everyone nervous and no matter what he does now there have been too many blunders now for him.

I was just about to come round to Cumbie corner yesterday and get your take on Glasgow’s Premier Irish Celtic pub slaughtering a Celtic player (maybe about 30 punters anyway), when the own goal happened. Criticism instantly turned to dogs abuse and ridicule and I didn’t bother my arse. I’d a quick look to check out the main hecklers and I’m pretty sure most of them don’t go to Parkhead. I can’t help thinking much of Efe’s treatment is a result of media brainwashing and it’s sad that so many tims buy into Snyde and DR lies and propaganda. Even Shortbread had a good laugh at his expense yesterday, and that was squeezed in during the Inverness v Arbroath half-time report.

  6. kevinlasvegas on

Yeah the Media play a big part in Efe treatment, But he does make the mistakes in the first place to give them ammo, Its not like he made a mistake a year ago and has never lived it down, Let bigons be bigons and all that, He consistently makes mistakes in high pressure situations hence the constant bombardment from our own and the media. As I said i think once we have more cover we move him on, for all of our sakes, Especially his, Seems a good guy who never hides. Heart of a Lion.

It’s not nice but plenty things in society aren’t nice, we live in very impatient and angry times Bhoys.

  7. Booing a player is daft. If the player is awsawsare of the booing it won’t make him play better or try harder.

Efe is rubbish and should have been emptied some time ago but till he goes, and I lpray it’s soon, the booing should stop.

  8. Only saw the last 30 mins. of yesterday’s game. I was very impressed by the attitude and ability of young Ajer. There were other young ones who put in a good performance. I think we have to be patient and give Brendan time to mold his own team. Remember also what Griff said, “We were playing the best team in the world.”

Sorry Efe for the idiots who did not behave like true Celtic supporters.

Ajer looks older than his years, Good at reading the game, He may get a run out in MD when the injuries clear up. He is strong and fast and seems to have a good understanding. Showing lots of promise.

  10. In my opinion our biggest asset for Wed isn’t any of the players. It’s the CP crowd.

Am I being paranoid in thinking the DR knows this also. And this headline is designed to undermine it:

“Celtic must stop gambling with Champions League fate by bluffing with a sub-standard hand”

We all have issues with the standard of squad but what it is – is what it will be for Wednesday. Don’t allow yourself to lose sight of the fact that the next few days are about unity and getting behind the team. Thursday, if you feel like it, is the correct time to start mineshafting but for now it’s all about happy clapping.

Unless of course you want us to fail, like maybe some at the DR, to get it round PL! No – not if you support the Celtic.

    Hail hail.

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Sorry but I feel most of you seem to be missing the point. The days of special relationship between clubs, players and “supporters” have gone and are unlikely ever to return. In the eyes of the people who run professional clubs, “supporters” are consumers who they regard as cash cows to be milked at every opportunity. The ticket prices for yesterday’s friendly were between 40 and 80 euros. Absolute rip-off. If clubs continue to treat supporters in this way, they shouldn’t be surprised if they start acting like consumers and let them know when the product is sub-standard.

If you hanker for the true club/supporter relationship, the try junior fitba’.

  14. INIQUITOUSIV on 31ST JULY 2016 1:38 AM

When Barca gain the ball, they all RUN at the opposition, giving the player on the ball all sorts of options. What do we do? Take forever to control it, pass it sideways or back……

    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

There’s a lot of bluster here about sideways and backwards passing of the ball (I’m using INIQUITOUS as an example). Watch Barca – the play in groups of 3 or 4 with an awful lot of short sideways and backwards passing, moving into space when they release the ball. The opposition get sucked in and then they spring the trap with an incisive through ball or a cross-field pass (much like the one Messi produced for the 3rd goal yesterday).

Sideways and backwards passing is fine if you have midfield players who can read when t play the killer pass or open up play with a 30 yard pass (think Lubo or Nakamura here). The issue isn’t about where we pass the ball, it’s the ability to keep moving, opening up space and make the killer pass. That can be coached into teams. Barca do it with all their kids and new arrivals.

I’m not saying BR will do this, but with a good deal of work, there are some talented players in our current squad who can be coached into fine players. the manager needs time. The season has hardly started and we are writing it off already?

Come on, let’s support our team properly like we gave done before through all the lean years!

KTF or GTF? It’s up to you.

  15. Booing a Celtic player while on the field during a match is unforgivable. It’s a Hun trait that has slowly dripped into or fan debase since the days of MON starting with the booing of team off the park at half and full time if there had been a less than acceptable performance.

The worst example was booing a player as he was being brought onto the field as a substitute a few years ago.

If the blame for the booing of Efe, is as some say, lies at the hand of MSM then some responsibility for that also has to be held by Paul67 and his recent articles as well also that have targeted Efe.

It’d also be interesting to determine how much the views of posters on here are guided by MSM as that accusation is thrown about by many who blame them for Celtic supporters views that don’t sit well.

I don’t read a paper or listen to Snyde or Shortbread. I rarely watch Scottish News program’s and tend to watch CH4 at 7 for a more, but not total, balance news production.

I form my own opinions of players and club officials based on their performances and actions.

So I’ll add my name to the list of those not influenced by Keith, jaba and L5.

While I watch those trying to blame those with an alternate opinion post links to and quote from L5 MSM while blaming that for our alternate view away from positive propaganda and conformity of club narrative.

No matter my opinion booing a player or the team is unacceptable and hunnish.

I,ve paid 12 quid per month to Celtic tv for the last 3 years and saw almost every game live.

    Because I live abroad.

Endured crap commentary and crap live feeds but still give my financial support to the Hoops.

I could easily access an illegal stream and watch all games for free on internet but i dont.

This is my way of supporting Celtic whilst living abroad.

If that makes me a hun then …I,m a hun :(

    —————————————————————————————————-

Thats just the way it can be on here. Dont worry about it.

    C’est la vie.

    HH.

  17. Before Brendan came in I was hoping whoever the manager was would build a new spine. So far he’s brought in Dembele & Toure. Toure possibly but I’m not sure either are able to provide us with a solid spine. Get this aspect right & players like Bitton, Rogic & Armstrong etc will show up better. The manager revealed he wants 4 in. Sinclair is a given (whether he gets him in or not) so that’s a left midfielder. I hope the other 3 are a Keeper, Defensive Midfielder & CF. I think we also need a creative number 10 but perhaps once we have a solid core in place then Rogic or perhaps Roberts could provide the missing creativity.

I like the way he’s got us pressing & moving off the ball but we are still looking soft defencively. We desperately need some leaders throughout the side. Hopefully he signs a few. HH.

  18. “Endured crap commentary” – on Celtic TV?

I thought that’s what we did on mainstream TV and crap was just blatant bias.

Give me Celtic TV anytime CSC

  19. Efe was more at fault for the 3rd goal yesterday than the own goal. Our fullback was posted missing & neither Gordon or O’Connell gave him a shout. Gordon especially as his body shape was to cut out the cross. A lack of communication did Efe for the own goal & I don’t blame him at all for trying to clear the danger. The third goal after a bout of booing & with his confidence shot was weak defending. Now ask yourself who’s fault was that?

Booing one of our players is far more embarrassing than any mistake they may make. Disgusting!

  32. The Battered Bunnet on

The booing of Celtic players by Celtic fans is by no means a new or recent phenomenon.

One of the most enduring examples is that of Neil Lennon under MON, which reached the stage that Lenny’s father would no longer go to the game, the better to avoid the abuse doled out to his son.

Lenny was simply the latest in a long line of targets for the support. If he thought he was getting it bad, he should have been around when our central defence comprised Malky MacKay and Mark McNally.

Or a succession of hopelessly hopeful apprentice full backs, each of whom in turn extended Danny McGrain’s career by a season, including Willie McStay, Davie Moyes, Brian Whitaker and Graeme Sinclair.

And then there was dear old Mikey Galloway, renamed Shitey in full-hearted chant, the perfect cover for Peter Grant, who would have got it worse had he not been a “real Tim”.

These guys though knew nothing of real abuse: That was reserved for those guys unfortunate enough to replace the legends of Lisbon and their Quality Street support act.

Tommy Callaghan, Ronnie Glavin, Frank Munro and many others cited in hard evidence that “Big Jock had lost it”. Yes, even Jock Stein got the bird towards the end.

So adept over the years had the Celtic support become at slagging off our own, that Not The View introduced a new (and long-running) column: They Embarrassed The Hoops”.

And now to Efe, following within earshot of some of our greatest and not-so greatest players.

Plus ça change, as they say in downtown Kaduna.
