The Craig Whyte narrative. Kris, Leo.

1626

Best news of the day?  Kris Commons wants to be involved tomorrow against Barcelona.  I doubt Kris is anywhere near match fit, so there’s no chance of him starting on Wednesday against Astana, but a 15 minute cameo, when the Astana players’ body clocks are telling them it’s after 2am, would go down a treat.

I’ve always been a bit more ambivalent about Leonel Messi than most.  “He’s not hit the levels of Ronaldinho” is my stock comment, and then there’s the dirty little subject.  (Tax).

But his media comments ahead of tomorrow’s International Champions Cup game, “I have a Celtic jersey at home. The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them”, proves there’s substance to the man.

I’ve a Celtic jersey at home too, Leo.  A few of us here do.

Former-Rangers former vice-chairman Donald Findlay is to defend Craig Whyte is his forthcoming trial.

Whyte’s urban legend is going to be difficult to shift, but it’s not accurate.  We mocked Rangers fans a few years ago, referring to him as “Our Hero” but he never was.  He was the bag man for a very dirty job.

How he handled the SFA, Uefa, HMRC and, most crucially, the insolvency court, when he managed to secure the appointment of Duff and Phelps as Rangers administrators was crucial in the continuation of football at Ibrox.

It was Duff and Phelps who gave Newco the right to use the name “Rangers”, after which point Whyte could claim he was passing on “Rangers”.  Everyone else mocked this liquidation fantasy at the time.  Until liquidation became a reality, that is.

Whyte left Newco relatively safe in the hands of Charles Green, where it would have thrived, if it hadn’t faced a hostile and damaging takeover bid from its first week of life.

Our auction prize, donated by (the pretty fabulous) Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, closes just after 1pm today.

You can win:

2 seats in the directors’ box

Champagne reception

5 course meal in the Walfrid Suite

Fully expenses bar (pre and post-match)

Half time snacks and refreshments

Car Parking

At the game against Kilmarnock on 24 September.

Money raised from the auction will go towards building a school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals. It it will be the 5th CQN school kitchen.

Our four existing kitchens feed over 2000 primary aged kids every day. School attendance has increased 30% since kitchens were built, as kids attend for their daily meal. This has an impact on health, education and life chances.

You can follow the auction on eBay here.  Thank you.

I’m off to Aberdour now for the 12th annual CQN Golf Open.  I’ll be the one holding the jackets.

See you then.

    In utero at the time.

I try and offer a few helpers when the initials get challenging.

Too many SA’s in the squad and in the MF (midfield).

StA = Real money involved in the transfer.

ScA = Real wind up involved in the transfer.

Both struggled yesterday in the 2nd half.

One however kept plugging away and offered something later on.

The other just hid and jogged about.

  4. Booing of EA yesterday was shameful.

Hopefully it was just the local SF types showing off their lack of diversity or history.

  5. Neil Lennon got booed for passing the ball back to goalkeeper in one particular game. Sammy got booed on the sideline as he prepared to be brought on as a sub.

I reserve the right to boo No Mark excuse while he reads Peters crystal jobbies all day long.

Champions league classics on BTSports, Messi hitting 5 against Leverkusen just now, to be followed at 12:30 with the hoops entertaining Barca in 2012!

  8. The booing of Efe was unfair particularly in a friendly.

Gordon taking stick? The reality is he is an excellent shot stopper but the other parts of his game are weak.If coaches see this either work on limiting his exposure to his weaknesses or improve these areas.

I can’t see Allan making it.

Wish Henderson was given more time.

Our central midfield area is devoid of leadership ,game sense and alent.

On evidence so far Dembele is raw and over anxious but i have the feeling he will come good once we start to play like a team.

Rogic has skill but unless he extends contract we should cash in..

Bitton is disastrous for us.Momentum killer who takes no responsibility in an area that is the teams heartbeat. He deserved praise for wednesday but some of the plaudits were ridiculous..

He replaced a forward to give us an extra body in midfield and stop them running through that zone unimpeded.Contrary to some who claimed he sprayed passes with aplomb his first pass to KT was short and resulted in them breaking upfield. His sideways and back passes were fine and took sting out the game which was appropriate.

Yesterday on numerous occasions he put the defense under pressure by returning ball to defender who was being pressed.

Their high press worked because few of ourmidfielders showed for the ball and our static play.

We got a football lesson yesterday and hopefully our coaches now understand what is required to turn us into an actual team.

  9. Craigellachie10 on

Celtic Barca, our back 4 Lustig, Efe, Wilson and Matthews out of position at LB!

Please don`t judge our current crop of players until Brendan has had some time to assess their potential worth to our team.

Progress on Wednesday is the only criterion right now.

  12. I hate hearing a Celtic player being booed,

ye ought to have heard the abuse Leigh Griffiths got off the roaster along from me when he missed a chance in the late stages of the Imps game with us leading 3 nil.

must have had his tank on Celtic -3

if not ,I worry about him.

It would be interesting to see the finances at Wolves?

Might be a HM punt to try and get credible this season.

I don't think too many of their players are on £10K per week.

Their promotion bonus might be something else though.

You and the Negster are polar extremes. Entrenchment and polarisation in most things isn’t a good basis for discussion is what I’m trying to say.

If I had to spell it out neither you or Neganon2 are wrong; nor are you guys right.

Like most debates the truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

  17. Big Efe Effortless needny worry about the boo Bhoys amongst the support I am sure if selected on the team sheet for the next game against seveco he is bound to be warmly applauded by the Huns

  18. BMCW @ 12.47

They might be better trying to develop a Premiership 2 with only 20 teams.

The 46 games a season kills it for me — Sat / Tues / Sat for over half the season just kills players.

Becomes a lottery at the end as 4 wins on the bounce in April gets you into the play offs.

Then it is all down to luck, the MIB, and injuries.

Too much sweat and not enough class.

Do you think that the Championship is developing enough or even any good players?

My memory has Watford and their clones shooting for loan deals and taking that gamble.

If they don’t shine then it is another batch in Jan.

However I don’t think the basic finances are there in that league.

Would be interesting to see how the average / median turnover figure has changed over the past 10 years — have the teams managed to grow in the shadow of the EPL?

Not sure if there are many ground improvements on the go at the moment?

Brighton was the last big one?

  19. Funny thing about Efe being boo’d was it wasn’t his fault, he had at least three players behind him who could see more than he could, i.e. no danger, but none shouted, to tell him to leave it, but he is the only player to get stick, go figure.

Many many Celtic players have been boo’d or otherwise derided, first one I can remember was Tommy Callaghan, regularly happened to him.

Good call CRAIGELLACHIE10 ! Recorded for posterity . Still get nervous after Messi pulls 1 back in stoppage time ! Always have to look twice at the team line up. Down to playing a system and staying organised.

Best night I can remember at CP – the atmosphere, the display, the noise and the result !

  22. Neil Lennon was bood a good number of times, particularly in European games. Samaras likewise. Big Efe is in good company. In my humble opinion, if you aren’t there to support the team, you can fleck off. Don’t give me the bollocks about “if you pay yer money….”. It’s about being a Celtic supporter. Too many of the current generation of our “fans” have seen nothing but (relative) success in the past 10 years with league titles and/or cups won each season and a modicum of success in reaching CL group stages and the odd flurry into the last 16.

For those of us who suffered through the lean years when we lost 9 in a row and on some occasions didn’t qualify for Europe. Carl Muggleton, Wayne Biggins etc were standard fare for a few seasons. I can remember regularly attending when the crowd was in the 20,000 mark and it was empty. I wonder how many of our current crop of “fans” would attend in those circumstances.

Some of these fans also know hee haw about the game and how it should be played, ranging from “get it in the box” to “stop passing it so much” – no idea! It’s about playing the game with what you have and at the moment, we are limited. BR will take a bit of time to get it right and we need to support him AND the players AND the board through this. As it says in the song “we’ll be there if we win, lose or draw…” NOT just if we win.

So let’s get back to supporting the team, even those who make mistakes. If your boss and workmates tell you you are shite every day it WILL affect your confidence. Same with big Efe. Give the guy a break. He gives his all for the team and we should do the same in supporting him!

  23. When players pull on the hoops they know it’s a special jersey and a special club with an ethos, founded on the basis of charity. If you think booing a Celtic player is charitable you’re at the wrong club

Something always perplexes me regarding our transfer strategy, outwith the usual garbage we get. If we’re waiting, as usual it seems, to get to the champions league before we buy players that’ll only come once we’re there (which seems to be the consensus view of perennial proceedings), and we don’t qualify ( personally I think we will, depending on draw) then we get players of a lower quality and then expect them to get us there the following year.
