The curious significant of 1 June

1642

There’s something I’ve never been able to figure out for the last nine years.  When Gordon Strachan was announced as Celtic manager, on 1st June 2014, he apologised to the media for bumping their calls the previous week, as he was due to takeover on that date, and the announcement was embargoed until then.

No idea why the news was embargoed, but it was.  Tomorrow’s the 1st June.  If the same rules hold true now as when Gordon Strachan was appointed, there was little chance of an appointment in late May.

If you’re not going to the CQN 10-in-a-row Charity Golf day on 4 July the Sean’s Trust Charity Dinner is on the same night at the Fullarton Suits, Glasgow.  Sean’s Trust is run by the late St John Doyle’s partner, Linda.  If you’d like to attend let Lennybhoy know, lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

GCT- You beat me to the punch the other day,i woke up knowing i owed you an apology.I need to learn not to be a wee bit precious sometimes, sincere apologies, and a cyber handshake back to you.Hope you enjoy coming home ,and going to see the team again.Hail Hail.

I supported Gordon’s appointment and whilst Roy would not have been my first choice (nor second for that matter) I believe we should unite benhind whoever is appointed and give them our full backing.

    We shall see.

  3. Alleged corruption in FIFA’s decision to award World Cup to Quatar. What’s new? When was the last time any major sporting event was awarded to any venue without ‘considerations’, I am being very polite here, were not given or taken?

Football and most things associated with it have been corrupt since the first day that an amateur player found a ten bob note tucked inside his boots.

  4. Celtic could have had Gus Hiddink as manager – we got the Leicester City manager instead.

The fact is – the Celtic ‘bored’ or, to be more specific – DD – disny have to work his ass off to bring a manager in too fill the stadfium – he’s got you all in his pocket already. imho

I posted the following at 22:14 Saturday, but it looks like I just missed you.

Following on from last night – Oz time – I really don’t have a beef with you. I generally enjoy your contributions to CQN and know you are a Celtic supporter of the highest calibre.

The reason I didn’t follow up on last week’s exchange was because I genuinely didn’t think there was anything more to say. I challenged you for your assertion that Neil Lennon had left over budget issues. You responded with a qualification of your view. I read your response and gave it some thought. That, to me, was an end to it. It wasn’t simply a case of my refusing to engage in a debate. We both had different opinions and we voiced them. There wasn’t really much more to say.

Having said that, I apologise for the tone of my responses earlier today. Would you please accept a cyber handshake?

    Hail Hail

The ole Copa del Ramsdens is the last truly honest and fair competition in World Football.

THat’s why the ole Sevconians struggle to win it.

  7. Whole lot of hot air being expended here about new manager. We will simply have to take DD’s choice and get on with it.

  12. HAIL HAIL my fellow cqn’rs! I tried to get on to post this last night but had forgotten my login details when I stepped “away from the mike!!” (Forgot to mention that in my email Paul :-)

Someone on the blog asked last night “if you could describe Roy Keane in 1 word what would it be?”

A few beat me to my choice…….’WINNER’

This despite knowing he was missing the final…. ..

I won a few bob that year on Man U…. also won a few bob off guys in the pub who laughed when I said I thought they could come back and win the tie after going 2 down, away from home, in 11 minutes…. I wish they had betting in play in those days!!

Anyone watching the game that night could see that man utd never deserved to be 2 goals down. The main thing that happened that I observed was that RK started dropping back deeper to win the second ball, all the knock downs and tgus control the game. On a side issue Paul Lambert used to do the same, they were both always available for a pass and both could score goals!! 2 great players to wear the hoops, albeit PL actually did it for us over a prolonged period. Two of the finest midfielders I have ever seen. On another side issue if carlsberg did midfields, who would argue with lambert Keane the maestro and stevie G! !!

Watching those links again got me wondering… what’s Dennis Irwin doing these days??? There sure is something strong about those oirish fellows ;-) although I would never admit this to jeremiah from ovens. … fiendishly strong for one so skinny….. what the feck do they feed them in the rebel county :-)

So am man from Cork…. and not because he’s irish…..it’s because of the attitude the Irish have to sport! Who was a tremendous world class footballer, a born leader, who worked under and with 4 of the best managers in the game (clough fergie wGS and Mon) and someone who is a natural WINNER is being strongly touted as our next manager…. that will do for me! And I still love N. F. LENNON. I was very sad to see him go

    On non footballing….

    Edb – ynwa

    Kris & Lisa – wow

I’ve missed so much more on the blog as I haven’t been posting lately. My thoughts, prayers, love, respect, condolences, commiserations, tears and congratulations have been offered to all whilst I’ve been lurking. … you know who you are.

    Letter in the Times today.

Sir, Your leader ‘Fouler English. usage’ (May 31) reminds me the word was used by true mastery by a Celtic supporter at a football match at Aberdeen in the 1970’s, where his team were losing to the home side.

In response to a local supporter who admonished him for effing and blinding his way through the first half, he shouted. ‘Ya effing auld effer, ya effin, couldn’y even effin spell effin effin!’

My companion at the match a junior Oxford don, observed with some admiration, ‘ What extraordinary economy of language – that was noun, adjective, verb, adverb all from one word in one sentence – and including a gerund too!’

If Gordon ‘got’ Celtic – why did he drop McGeady and as a consequence,

    blow 4 i a r for us?

Tony was cheated but – Celtic have ‘always’ been cheated in this country.

    ——————————————————————–

Gordon “got” Celtic all right – and still does. If you listen to any interview he gives you would be able to tell that – he never has a bad word to say about the club. He dropped Aidan because he was the manager and it’s his decision. Why do you believe a single tactical decision over his years of management at Celtic suggests he doesn;t understand what Celtic are all about? Even for you that is bonkers. Gordon’s track record at Celtic was superb BTW.

Every managerial appointment carries a risk. Keane’s no different.

So many different things can affect whether an appointment is a success or failure it’s hardly worth trying to predict the outcome.

Momentum, personalities, injuries, luck – the whole shebang.

You can try and minimise the risk by putting in place safeguards or restrictions round the appointment. I think Celtic have done this quite well recently – the manager certainly doesn’t completely run the team as we know.

He wouldn’t be my first choice but he’ll get my support as did the rest.

It could be argued that it is a quite brave appointment though. Certainly interesting times ahead.

    Good luck to the fella.

Why was the stadium emptying last season..?

The Tommy Burns part is a low bowler, he was great friends with him and to use his death to form part of your opinion on the man is crass.

I don’t know why Aiden McGeady was dropped, but heard of alleged rumours of remarks made by him, in reference to a member of GS’s family….

Is that a reason….? Dunno personality clash.

I thought the decision to play Maloney instead of McGeady was wrong. Said so then, say so now.

But it didn’t define GS’ time at Celtic. It didn’t wreck our season either.

What wrecked our season was three international strikers hardly scoring a goal between them after Christmas.

    Poor decision though,IMO.

  27. Bmcuw, TT, kevJ et al…

wit yez arguing for, we all know it was the MIB that robbed us of that title.

  28. Keane and Celtic strike me as a bad marriage in the making. I can see an initial attraction between the 2 parties. My hearts hopes for a positive outcome but my head just keeps yelling out ‘this is doomed to failure’ .

Lenny had no track record before taking over nothing to indicate he would be good but nothing to indicate he would be bad . Keane has a lot that tells me there is a reasonable probability he will not do well and little to suggest he will be a success.

Keane is an angry insecure man. He is not a man manager in the modern sophisticated way.

I hope it works out well should he be appointed and will give him my support but I think he’s a risk we don’t need to …why not lure MON back?
