The Great Leap between SPFL and Inter Milan

859

Making the great leap between playing Scottish Premiership teams and the likes of Inter Milan will always be a challenge for Celtic.  We have done so many times in recent years, Milan were held home and away in the Champions League knock-out stage, Barcelona were beaten, but whenever we have carried the game to opponents of this stature, instead of reverting to our own style of catnenaccio, we’ve lost heavily.  Quicker, more skilful, players, could make us look statuesque by comparison.

This is not a criticism.  If the only way you can compete with a team with ten times your resources is to defend your 18 yard line, you should do so.

Things could have gone either way on Thursday.  We were defensively inept during the opening minutes as Inter found space goal-side of their markers.  I don’t know if Ronny had a moment of self-doubt at that point, perhaps he did, but was simply unable to unwind the attacking instincts of his players, but Celtic are all the better for the way they picked themselves off the floor.

I’m sure the odds on Inter progressing will be short, but I’m also sure Ronny Deila will know his players can win in Milan.

I arrived home late last night to read that Tony Conway, son of our own RWE, lost his battle against Motor Neurone Disease/ALS.  I met Tony, with dad John and brother Martin, three years ago.  Tony was still fit enough to walk, but evidence of the pain the family shared was evident.  The three of them travelled back from their US home two years ago, along with mum Pauline, to see Celtic, and meet some family.

They bought hospitality tickets and minutes before kick-off, Celtic’s Iain Jamieson nabbed Tony and asked if he was able to make the halftime draw.  Tony knew this would be the last time he would see Celtic, so his journey up the tunnel and onto the park was, to put it mildly, a very special Celtic Park moment.

  1. Wish we’d call it as it is…racism.

    ‘Sectarian’ just doesn’t cover it.

Imagine we’d been set up by Biafran refugees in the 1970s rather than Irish refugees in the 1880s.

Can you imagine the public response to ‘why don’t you go home?’ ?

What if we sang the Biafran national song in honour of our founding fathers would we be lambasted and ridiculed for it?

My Irish lines are very, very distant and I feel only Scottish but I can take joy in my family history and the history of my club. I am proud we honour our Irish (and Catholic) roots. I don’t any supporter who isn’t but equally I know no supporter who isn’t very proud of our open to all founding principles.

St stivs, I really enjoyed watching Parma in the early nineties when they were managed by a good man, Nevio Scala. They played some great football and they had an Italian redhead in defence, Apolloni I think. They had players like Tam Brolin, Asprilla, Zola ( I think) playing fr them.

They were funded by the now defunct Parmalat group who went bust in a similar way to MIH

Ma good lady (Sevconian) but definitely the best Wummin I have met since my own mother passed, said to me “why don’t you have your day oot at CQN11 you r on it enough” I have said it before, about 30 decent enough Celtic fans but I would not inflict CQN11 with 30 drunken eijits from Coatbridge, Bailleston, Uddingston, Wishaw, Blantir & surrounding areas, fourgreenfields if you fancy a wee shandy or two I would meet you in Partick area about 1pm on Froday 13thMatch if you fancy a beer or two and sing s song or two about fallen heroes !

Delaney’s, around 1989, I went to see Van Morrison at the Pavillion.

One of my pals knew Keevins and introduced me to him. He came over as a good guy and he let me share the taxi with him, as I still stayed in Knightswood at the time. It was pre mobile phone days and he ordered the taxi from the Scotsman’s office in West George Street, where he worked at the time. He did this so he could put the taxi fare on his expenses.

Little did I know what a media git he would become.

Deciding to tune into a Rangers game and then choosing to be, ehm, offended poses the question – why tune in in the first place?

    ——-‘

Everyone who pays a BBC licence fee or a subscription to a broadcaster should be entitled to watch a sporting event without fear of listening to vile sectarian chanting.

The perpetrators should be tackled rather than the viewing public having to make such a decision due to non sporting factors.

  15. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

I sometimes listen to SSB if I’m driving.

The one who really winds me up is that wee weasel, Wishart.

He may not be on official duty in his SPFA role but the fact he says hee haw about the religion & nationality of some SPFA members being mocked by the horribles on a regular basis shows he has no concern for the people he is paid to look after & support.

When the racial & sectarian abuse of Neil & Aiden was at its worst, Wishart who is the Scottish figurehead of Show racism the red card, offered no public backing for them nor criticised the nastiness shown to them both.

I took a wee shine to Parma after we played them in late 90’s.

Carnavarro, buffon, Baggio and one of my all time faves…. Thuram. Amazing player.

  22. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Geordie Munro, thanks for the reply.

For an Italian team of the time, Parma played less defensive football than other Serie A sides. Dino Baggio was a terrific midfielder.

Nevio Scala did a great job with them . He later became manager at Dortmund.

Thuram is one of the best defenders I have seen, just behind Maldini and obviously the best, our very own Danny. Honourable mention to Baresi also.

  23. Weefra, just off to my kip, but notice that you and Mrs Weefra had some good news. Glad to hear it mate!

  26. Re Keevins & Co,

By the sounds of it he could be charged under the OBAF act himself for the comments. He has made racially discriminate comments on the Soldier Song, Ireland’s national anthem.

This is yet another indicator of the stupidity of the whole act, but of course, Polis Scotland would never pursue such a charge.

Any national anthem being sung in the context of football can lead to arrest.

In this country, as ridiclous as it is, enforcement has only been applied to the Irish national anthem and other Irish political songs.

In other words, the act itself is discriminatory and sectarian, and is quite clearly being used as part of an agenda to harass and discriminate against Celtic supports for celebrating our Irish history.

Politically, they want to even up crime figures to hide the truth – and it’s not difficult for them to find rozzers who’ll enforce the law discriminately against Celtic supporters with glee.

To reach their end of evening up crime figures, their failure to get enough successful convictions means that they need to make even more arrests and so it continues.
