The great United reunion, signing backup keepers

1109

Ronny Deila’s dream of reconstructing the Dundee United team of 2014 is on track as United have agreed terms for the sale of striker Nadir Ciftci, who is set to join Stuart Armstrong and Gary MacKay-Steven in green and white hoops.

United are feeling sore at losing three players to a rival but it could be argued this deal is a positive result for them.  They are no different than Celtic in needing to acquire good players who will enhance their team and generate transfer fees when they leave.

Armstrong and Mackay-Steven gave Celtic a timely boost when they arrived in the team in February.  If Ciftci adapts as quickly he’ll do well.

Signing a backup goalkeeper is a tricky call.  Do you blow a large slice of budget on a genuine contender for the goalkeeper’s jersey, or perhaps promote the next teenage David Marshall?  Both are viable calls.  If we sign Logan Bailly (29) for a fee from Belgian club Leuven the expectation at Lennoxtown is that he will push Craig Gordon.

That would leave us with competition across the field, apart from the left back slot…..

  2. One question I do have regarding CL qualification.

If we make it to the group stages what will PL do with the money?

My thoughts are that he cannot spell the concept of a “Growth Agenda”.

So where will all the money go?

Here are some of my suggestions / £20mill to prime the pump.

    Reserve / Training stadium.

Full sized indoor pitch — preferably not at Lennoxtown.

Hotel and conference stuff at the “Celtic Cross” = London Rd and the EERR.

New main stand — small increase in seats / lots more facilities.

Spend some money on Crownpoint — help repay the GCC help.

Expand the facilities behind the JS Stand.

    Re-establish Parkhead Juniors.

Cost of advertising on BBC Weather Site has suddenly increased by 400%.

On another note. When I read SOME of the more negative posts, I imagine a loud mouthed, narrow-minded and arrogant personality expounding his/her view. In reality, every CQNer I have met is, at the very least, a reasonable person with a reasoned viewpoint. Why is that?

  4. Cifcti is a massive improvement on the recent signing in the striker department. Better signing than Pukki, Balde, Scepovic, Bangura, Rasmussen, Lassad and the collection of loans and projects we’ve seen pass through the revolving door at CP.

Our best strikers in recent years have been those who our scouting department have had nothing to do with signing, players known to the coaching staff, Hooper, Stokes and Griffiths.

Ciftci is a good player, gives us something different and will improve playing withbetter players than at United.

    Interesting points.

One that caught my eye was the indoor pitch. Why would you not have it at Lennoxtown?

Yeah….The board want to attract supporters back, so what is their solution….A refurb that reminds us of all the great players that have graced Celtic Park….yeah ok , however, the reality of our transfer policy is shocking.

PL…You are fooling nobody but yourself.

It’s like a practical joke played on xmas day….You open a huge sparkled and ribboned box with excitement, only to realise that its empty.

Beautiful Stadium…Best fans in the world….No doubt about that.

However…We are signing dross, and the expectation management is such, that the board think the fans will accept anything, while they trouser their massive bonuses for failure.

Their stupidity is costing Celtic on the park…..if things keep goings they are, we will have no transfer budget next year.

    Is that acceptable?

L/town should be set up as an academy.

I would like the training facilities to return to P/head.

The whole L/town project was a bit too much Ford think in it.

GM / TFOD have a training centre in the shadows of the Campsies.

Therefore we must have one as well.

I saw far to much of this in my old day job.

Therefore slightly raw to PL and the club having similar thoughts.

Let me ask all those decrying Cifti – if he is wrong, then who is right – name them and their price.

Look at The Danny Ings thing – a four year package for this young guy, at £80k/week will be in the region of £24 MILLION – even at the bottom of the EPL, with a guaranteed £150 MILLION over four seasons, including parachutes, this can be contemplated – we get get £2.6 million EVERY YEAR.

We can only buy if we can sell.

We were once a buying side — £5mill pa was my guess.

I absolutely love Celtic….that’s why it does my head in, when the Celtic board think they can do as they please.

Peter Lawell is not Celtic….he is a businessmen who takes no responsibility for his terrible decisions relating to players…he should be held accountable for the wasted money….not rewarded for failure.

Im more of a Celtic fan than PL will ever be.

So, when the board start to act as though they own Celtic..I will say something about it.

I don’t want a refurb….I want to see Celtic in the Champions League.

  20. The negativity of some here is truly astounding. Really – you guys don’t know how lucky you are that all you have to worry/moan about in life is the backroom machinations of Celtic!

Get a grip, FFS! God forbid you ever have really important stuff to worry about one day… like paying a mortgage, bills, etc.

So after months and months of scouting Europe and the rest of the world, the best we can do is spend a million quid or so on a player, whom I cannot find one Celtic supporter who rates him and who has done effectively nothing against us. This is pathetic. You cannot seriously tell me there are no other players in Europe who are better than him.

  22. Fancy giving someone a huge sparkled and ribboned box for Christmas ans there’s nothing in it!

Marcel Halstenburg of St Pauli was linked but that has gone quiet, as has Barry Douglas from Lech Poznan.

A left sided (&fit) Mikael Lustig would do, although if it’s not Jordi Alba or Marcello then we will be accused of lacking ambition.

The football world has changed since we were a buying club some of the huge money changing hands for very ordinary players shows how much it has changed.Celtic dont have the income in Scottish football so have to sell players to fund new ones we may not like it but it is simple economics.Live outwith your means and the chances are you will end up like Leeds Utd. or Rangers.H.H.

  29. Uefa has responded to Aberdeen’s complaint after goalkeeper Danny Ward was targeted with a laser beam during the Europa League tie with Shkendija.

“Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Shkendija for use of laser pointer – Article 16 (2) of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations,” a statement said.

“This case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control Ethics and Disciplinary body on it’s next meeting on 23 July.”

Aberdeen drew the first leg match 1-1.

The Dons said a Uefa delegate at the National Stadium in Skopje was informed of the incident after the game.

Hristijan Kirovski’s goal for Shkendija cancelled out Niall McGinn’s opener.

Aberdeen had pitched goalkeeper Ward, on loan from Liverpool, straight into European action.
