The joy of living today, tomorrow

893

After writing a piece on our European season for the forthcoming CQN Magazine I read the excellent contribution from SFTB this morning.  It is only natural that we live in the moment but for the last 70 years of the 20th century Celtic fans, more than anyone else, viewed each day in its historical context.

Older generations would have had little choice but to keep their history alive during the lost decades between the mid-20s and mid-60s.  7-1 and the Coronation Cup, each magnificent and modest in their own way, were the highlights, while the legend of Jimmy McGrory more than anyone established what was known as the Celtic Way.

Then came Lisbon.  In an instant, all that history was eclipsed.  New heroes, one of whom recalled to me he was told Celtic would amount to nothing with him in the team by a ‘fan’ a few years earlier, changed everything, but for this most historical of clubs, the inheritance was not all positive.

If Jimmy McGrory established Celtic as a remarkable goal-scoring team, the incessant attacking that afternoon in Lisbon cast an unattainable shadow.  It proved Celtic could win the European Cup by playing fabulous football but set a template we were cursed to attempt to follow.

The rules of the off-field game have changed often since those days, no more so than this season, when Celtic grew from a team who were penned into their own penalty box by HJK Helsinki, who needed a goal to knock us out of Europe in August, from a team the Turin media were joyous when Juventus beat home and away.  Thoughts of ‘Maybe we could win this” have since emerged in Turin.

I’ve loved every minute of this season, from the last minute header in Moscow to the last minute header in Dingwall. Adding context to it is a joy for one of our tomorrows.

World football could be about to experience a major shake-up with the potential introduction of the “Dream Football League” (DFL), according to The Times. Backed by the Qatari royal family, the DFL will host 24

teams every two years in an audacious attempt to rival the Champions League and the Club World Cup and, in the process, offer enormous financial rewards for the participating teams.

The burgeoning league could be regarded as a threat to both FIFA and UEFA, but marks another step forward for Qatar to be recognised as a growing super-power in

world football after being handed the rights for the 2022 World Cup finals in 2010.

The DFL could potentially entice a number of clubs to participate, with organisers expected to offer in the region of £175 million for elite clubs such as Barcelona and

Manchester United to compete every two-year cycle.

The money being discussed on offer in the DFL casts a long shadow over the world’s top competitions; the Champions League has an annual prize fund of £595 million, with last season’s winner Chelsea netting £47.3 million.

It would also help many of Europe’s wealthiest clubs overcome UEFA’s new “financial fair play” regulations. However, it remains to be seen which clubs have been

targeted by the new league, with the DFL hoping to have 16 “permanent” teams, with a further eight global clubs competing on an invitational basis. But DFL organisers have targeted the Premier League as a major source of contenders, with the league rumoured to be eyeing at least four of England’s top clubs.

Officials for UEFA, the Premier League and major clubs refused to comment on the proposed league.

I totally agree regarding Wilson in the Herald and that is why I cancelled my subscription and emailed the Herald to tell them exactly why ! Suggest you follow suit!

  6. Miorning all. Lovely day down here once again but once again really cold. Still, far rather have the brightness than the grey we too have are lumped with.

Couple of questions for folk: firstly, Radio Scotland’s commentator on Barca’s club motto translated it as “we are a club”. Could Celtic_First or one of our Catalan members give a better translation? I thought it meant much more than that. Secondly, have Celtic commented on Longmuir’s latest attempt to shoehorn his favourites further up the league by bringing in their colts to the bottom tier. Why should he be allowed to get away with such irresponsible and blatant cheating?

  7. Margaret McGill @5.10,

Mirrors my feelings and experience to a “T”. Sadly too true and it means so much to ra peepil like Longmuir, Ogilvie, Fleming and Bryson. They have to be rooted out for the good of Scottish football. I doubt if it will happen.

  14. I know i shouldn’t have but i was tempted to look at Wilsons article in the Herald after it getting a few mentions. it is truly insidious. Couched in pseudo intelligentsia trying to focus on how They can return to past glories. At least the Tabs are not subtle in their flag waving.

Focussing on teams around Europe that develop talent and spot bargains elsewhere while remaining competitive in their own league (and Europe) and yet can’t bring himself to mentions how successful we have been in implementing such a model.

Also forgetting to mention that key part of the strategy is financial stability. I presume this does not mean paying £10k a week for ageing non entities, racking up a huge loss and staring into the abyss once more.

  15. Longmuir wrote

Only two teams in Scotland could, I would argue, at this time be able to support and fund Such a Colt team – Celtic and Rangers.

  16. Anyone else smell a rat with this colt team idea? It might be a ruse to get sevco fast tracked. In as much as sevco v sevco b in the 3rd division next year would be ridiculous, they might suggest promoting sevco was now a necessity.

  19. The colts team idea is not a bad one, its just a bad one at this particular time in Scottish football as so far all league reconstruction talk has been divisive in the current environment of mistrust of the people who run our game. Big clubs in other countries run B teams in lower leagues successfully, the bulk of the Barca team started their professional careers in the Barca B team.

What Scotland needs is less professional clubs with a semi-professional pyramid system below 2 professional divisions. Colt clubs (of any professional team who wishes to run them not an elite 2)could start off in regionalised league and be allowed to climb as high as 1 league below the parent club.

Unfortunately Longmuir’s proposal has nothing to do with the good of Scottish football and everything to do with one particular club who are currently struggling to run 1 team let alone start up a B team.

  20. Aye Wilson’s article is farcical. Lennon has taken us a helluva distance on aidens and ki’s transfer fees. We’ve got watt, Forrest in the last 16 of the CL having got through the academy, with dylan on the bench. We’ve got a team filled with bosmans and bargain buts, all f whom have increased in value. The next stage will be funded from hoops, wanyama and big lurch leaving for big bucks. Wé are a much more relevant example than Swansea, bvb and feyenoord, as we play within fiscal constraints that those clubs don’t. He just can’t bring himself to admit that the aspiration sevco should have…Is to be just like celtic.

  25. The Battered Bunnet on

Watched the Barca v Milan tie last night enthralled.

It seemed to me given recent performances that Barca had started to believe their own performances, and were in many games larely going through the motions rather than playing with purpose.

I cannot discount the impact of losing Guardiola and then Villanova in quick succession, and certainly Roura would in ordinary circumstances be nowhere near pitchside, nevertheless, in recent games Barca have been a caricature of themselves, exemplified by the shadow boxing performance in Milan 3 weeks ago.

821 passes completed, resulting in one shot on target in the game. Pointless.

Last night was a different team. It was the same players in the same strip, but the purpose and intent was back, and back with an aggression that served to highlight perhaps what had been missing in recent weeks.

Messi’s brace and Villa’s peach might live longest in the memory, but the key performer last night was Jordi Alba, saving the match for Barca with superb back post defending to prevent a Robinho sitter late in the game, then sprinting all of 90 metres in the 93rd minute to get onto Sanchez’s pass. That he had the fitness to control the ball at full sprint, at that point in the game, after that burst, and the composure to look, settle and finish, framed a terrific overall contribution of intelligence, technique and determination.

Milan will look to Niang’s miss in the first half at 1-0 as critical, and the curious decision to go short with the free kick in injury time that effectively cost the 4th goal, but in truth, Milan appeared more to ape Barca’s style than attempt to compete with them, and by the time they realised they were in a real scrap it was almost too late.

All in all, delighted to see Barca back with a bang. What a remarkable result.

  26. The Wilson article would be more accurate if he described Borussia’s model as being almost identical to the one we are working to at the moment but the hurting Hun just can’t bring himself to do so.

Was a regular of the Herald for years but have not bought a print copy for about 4 years, in no small part due to nonsense like this.

Suspect the Herald will not exist 5 years from now.

Read that article, very interesting. The fact that Dortmund have one of Europe’s brightest, forward thinking and sought after young coaches in Europe whilst Sevco have the pie-munching game show host renders all argument/debate irrelevant.

Jon Daly & Nicky Law to add to Ian Black & Ted Kyle, the model is more Dumbarton than Dortmund.

  28. The Colts nonsense is a red herring, trying to cloud the issue in the hope of not getting voted through.Sevco dont want 12-12-18 ,remember.

Funny, I was thinking the other night that Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius might offer you some comfort (it’s a setting of Newman’s poem about the transition of a soul from this life to the next).
